The eerie laughter seemed to surge from all directions, growing closer and louder, like invisible hands tightening around Xuan Yang's throat.
He felt the air around him turn icy, as if he had plunged into a bottomless pit of ice, his very blood threatening to freeze. An unknown sense of dread washed over him like a tidal wave.
“Who’s there? Show yourself!” Xuan Yang shouted, though his voice betrayed a barely perceptible tremor. He tried to bolster his courage with this outburst, but it was overshadowed by a primal fear.
Yet, the only response was the increasingly piercing laughter, sharp and twisted, as if it came from demons in hell, sending chills down his spine.
“Hehehe… isn’t this the Puppet Master? You finally arrived…”
A chilling voice echoed through the maze, slithering into Xuan Yang’s ears like a venomous snake crawling along the walls.
Xuan Yang’s heart raced. Puppet Master? Why does everyone keep calling me the Puppet Master? What is going on? Countless questions tangled in his mind like a mess of threads.
He scanned his surroundings warily, his gaze sharp as he sought the source of the voice in the darkness of the maze, like a leopard hunting its prey.
Suddenly, a dark figure slowly emerged from the depths of the labyrinth, as if birthed from the shadows, silent and stealthy.
The figure was tall and imposing, over two meters high, cloaked in black robes that obscured its features. Only a pair of dual eyes glimmered in the darkness, shining with an eerie green light like two ghostly flames.
“Who are you?” Xuan Yang asked in a deep voice, powerful and resonant like a lion poised to pounce.
“Who am I? Heh…” The shadow let out a cold laugh filled with mockery and disdain. “I am here to guide you toward your destiny.”
“Destiny?” Xuan Yang questioned, furrowing his brow. “What destiny?”
“The destiny of the Puppet Master,” the shadow replied, its voice imbued with an alluring power. “You are destined to become the Puppet Master and control this world.”
Xuan Yang was filled with confusion and shock.
Puppet Master? Control this world? What kind of nonsense is this? He chuckled bitterly; these words sounded like something out of a third-rate novel's cliché plot.
"I don't understand what you're saying," Xuan Yang said, his tone filled with caution and suspicion. He did not trust the mysterious shadow.
"You will understand soon enough," the shadow replied, confidence lacing its voice. "But first, you must pass my test."
"Test?" Xuan Yang asked, fixing his gaze on the shadow, trying to find a flaw in its words. "What kind of test?"
"Simple: defeat me," the shadow said, its voice dripping with provocation, as if to imply that Xuan Yang was no match for it.
Xuan Yang regarded the shadow warily. He knew this figure was anything but ordinary; from its dramatic entrance to its words, its strength was clearly formidable.
"Fine, I accept your test," Xuan Yang declared, his eyes resolute and showing no sign of retreat.
He took a deep breath, preparing for battle as the blood within him began to boil and the fighting spirit ignited in his chest.
"Very well," the shadow said, a hint of admiration in its voice. "Let’s begin."
No sooner had the shadow finished speaking than it transformed into a dark blur, charging toward Xuan Yang with astonishing speed, like lightning slicing through the night sky.
Xuan Yang quickly dodged, rolling to the right just in time to evade the shadow's attack. He could even feel the rush of wind created by its movement, cutting across his cheek like a knife.
As he focused, he realized that the shadow's speed was incredible and its attacks were unpredictable and elusive. Each strike carried a chilling aura that sent shivers down his spine.
Xuan Yang dared not underestimate it any further and swiftly summoned his Shadow Puppet, his most powerful trump card.
Once summoned, the Shadow Puppet immediately launched an assault on the shadow, its sharp claws slashing from various angles.
However, the shadow's strength far exceeded Xuan Yang's expectations.
The attacks from the Shadow Puppet had no effect on the Shadow, which effortlessly dodged them, moving like a ghost amidst the strikes.
With a cold laugh, the Shadow taunted, "Is that all you've got to defeat me? How naive!"
Once again, he transformed into a shadow and charged at Xuan Yang with even greater speed and ferocity.
Xuan Yang quickly tried to evade, but still found himself struck by the Shadow. A sharp pain surged through his chest, as if he had been hit by a speeding truck, sending him flying backward until he crashed heavily against the wall.
"Ugh!" Xuan Yang spat out a mouthful of blood, staining his shirt.
"Damn it!" he cursed, feeling as if his insides had been rearranged. The pain washed over him like a tide, nearly suffocating him.
He hadn't anticipated the Shadow's strength to be so overwhelming; he couldn't even withstand a single blow. It was nothing short of a crushing defeat.
He needed to find a way to defeat the Shadow; otherwise, he was as good as dead. He certainly didn't want to die in this cursed place.
Taking a deep breath and enduring the pain, Xuan Yang summoned the Shadow Puppet once more. He knew he had to change his strategy; otherwise, victory was impossible.
This time, he altered his approach.
Instead of having the Shadow Puppet attack directly, he commanded it to spread out and surround the Shadow from different angles. His plan was to trap the Shadow and look for an opportunity to strike decisively.
Seeing this unfold, the Shadow sneered and said, "Just a trivial trick!"
He transformed into a shadow again, attempting to break free. His speed was astonishing, like a bolt of black lightning darting through the encirclement of Shadow Puppets.
However, Xuan Yang was prepared. He focused intently, controlling the Shadow Puppets to close in on the Shadow, leaving no chance for escape.
Trapped within the circle of Shadow Puppets, the Shadow found himself unable to move. Though his attacks were powerful, facing such a multitude of Shadow Puppets rendered them ineffective.
Xuan Yang seized the opportunity and unleashed his ultimate skill—Reverse Control, the most powerful technique he had learned from the Book of the Puppet Master.
He turned the control over the shadow back to himself, seizing its body. This was his last hope; if this move failed, he would lose all combat ability.
The shadow's body moved uncontrollably, starting to attack itself. Its fists struck hard against its own body, producing a dull thud.
"What’s happening?" the shadow shouted in terror, its voice filled with fear and disbelief.
It realized it could not control its own body, which was utterly bizarre; it had never encountered such a situation before.
"Heh heh..." Xuan Yang sneered, a victorious smile spreading across his face. "Now, it's my turn."
He manipulated the shadow's body and walked deeper into the maze. He intended to use the shadow to find the exit of the maze and uncover the ultimate answer.
What was the identity and purpose of the shadow?
Could Xuan Yang unravel the secrets of the maze and find the final answer?
All of this remained uncertain, but Xuan Yang knew he had no way out; he could only move forward with determination.
Deep within the maze, darkness surged as if concealing even greater secrets, waiting for Xuan Yang to unveil them.
