The referee signaled that the game was about to start. We entered the court and took out a prepared coin from our pocket. After tossing the coin, it showed that we had possession. A Fei served the ball to Jiang Lingfeng, and the game officially began. Jiang Lingfeng held the ball and attempted to break through Linda, but Linda stuck to him like glue, not letting go. Jiang Lingfeng had no choice but to aim for a gap and passed the ball out. After receiving it, I jumped for a mid-range shot and scored! I practiced mid-range shots the most, so my shooting percentage from this position is quite high. After we scored, before we could catch our breath, the Flame Cavalry Team quickly inbounded the ball for a fast break. Linda received the ball and passed it to Cui Lifeng outside the three-point line. Cui Lifeng caught it and shot a three-pointer, scoring in just six seconds from the inbound.
After we inbounded, Jiang Lingfeng received the ball and passed it to me. I made a behind-the-back pass to A Fei in the paint. A Fei took three steps for a layup, but Zhao Weiwei ran up to block him. In mid-air, A Fei passed the ball out to Jiang Lingfeng, who then passed it back to me. I shot from the free-throw line and scored again. The Flame Cavalry Team members remained calm, not rushing their offense this time. With five seconds left on the shot clock, they quickly attacked. Cui Lifeng drove for a layup while I defended forward, but unexpectedly, Cui Lifeng spun the ball around his neck in mid-air before shooting and scoring. I felt embarrassed; what did Cui Lifeng just do?! That was exhilarating.
After A Fei's serve, Jiang Lingfeng received the ball and immediately shot from the corner—score! Both teams were on fire with their shooting percentages; whether attacking inside or shooting three-pointers, everything was incredibly accurate. After their inbound, Linda isolated against Jiang Lingfeng. She dribbled from the corner all the way to the top of the arc without finding a suitable opportunity. Suddenly, she made a quick move while passing the ball behind her back. I rushed over for a steal but was beaten to it by Cui Lifeng, who passed it to Zhao Weiwei under the basket. Zhao Weiwei easily scored with a layup. The two teams exchanged points back and forth for most of the half; with three minutes left in the game, the score was tied at zero. We had scored over thirty points in seven minutes; it seemed we were too focused on offense and neglected our defense.
Now it was our possession again. Jiang Lingfeng indicated he would inbound. A Fei quickly moved down low while Jiang Lingfeng executed a behind-the-back pass that fooled Linda. After A Fei caught it, he attempted a hook shot under the basket but missed. Zhao Weiwei grabbed the rebound and passed it out to Linda. I ran over and successfully intercepted the airborne basketball before passing it back to A Fei again. A Fei went for another hook shot this time without disappointing us—he scored! Huh? We've been playing for so long, yet our cheerleaders haven't made a peep? I glanced back at our two cheerleaders during Flame Cavalry's inbound; oh no! Those two were cuddling together asleep—no professionalism at all! They were nowhere near as dedicated as Cookie and Sha Xiaomei.
With 40 seconds left in the game and two minutes and thirty-three seconds remaining on the clock, Flame Cavalry inbounded. Linda received the ball and executed a high lob pass to Zhao Weiwei, who used his height advantage to catch it and dunk for points. They even played an aerial relay; it seemed they were shifting their offensive focus inside now. Zhao Weiwei's height of over 1.9 meters ensured they secured rebounds while scoring inside as well; if that continued, A Fei might really struggle against him. Sure enough, during their inbound play, both Cui Lifeng and Linda actively fed Zhao Weiwei with passes. With one minute left in the game, Flame Cavalry led us by three points at 40-37; we felt like we were on the brink of elimination.
After we inbounded, Jiang Lingfeng controlled the ball carefully; every missed shot or turnover could be fatal now, so we dared not act recklessly. When Jiang Lingfeng reached the top of the arc, he faked a shot that tricked Linda into jumping high in anticipation; once she landed back down, he jumped again for a three-pointer—score! We tied it at 40-40 with forty-two seconds remaining in regulation time. Honestly, we didn't want to go into overtime with Flame Cavalry; we hoped to settle this within regular time.
After Flame Cavalry's inbound play, Linda began organizing their offense while slowing down their pace because they knew if they scored this possession, they would put pressure on us; however, if they failed to score, they might have to face our retaliation instead. Linda stopped at the free-throw line for a jump shot but was blocked by A Fei rushing in. I quickly picked up the loose ball that rolled on the ground and went for a layup while Cui Lifeng chased after me; suddenly changing direction with a hook shot, I scored! With twenty seconds left in the game, we led by two points; Flame Cavalry still had a chance though—I guessed they would attack inside since their interior players had an absolute advantage compared to ours.
Cui Lifeng threw from zero degrees before passing to Linda; Linda suddenly made a bounce pass to Zhao Weiwei inside. Zhao Weiwei caught it and immediately went up for a dunk while all three of us rushed up to interfere with him—the ball spun around on the rim before bouncing out! Cui Lifeng chased after its direction as it ricocheted off towards the right sideline of the court; he leaped after it but was too late—his entire body parallel to the ground as he desperately tried to save it reminded me of Ultraman when I watched as a kid—his hands straining towards saving that basketball—but it was still too far away! Just five centimeters separated his hands from that basketball when it went out of bounds.
Cui Lifeng fell heavily onto the ground with only two seconds left in regulation time—we had possession now! We could celebrate advancing into round three! Cui Lifeng lay on his stomach staring blankly at the hoop as we inbounded; after Jiang Lingfeng dribbled twice with possession, the referee blew his whistle signaling that time was up! We ultimately defeated Flame Cavalry 44-40 and advanced to the semifinals of our region!
