"Scrap?" Min Di asked.
"This 'Hybridization' experiment is brutal. It is conducted entirely during the evolutionary process of cloned organisms, resulting in many robots that failed the Hybridization. These robots are referred to as 'scrap.' They were supposed to be disposed of like waste, but they have developed their own consciousness and managed to survive, hiding underground. Some have lived here for thousands of years."
"Thousands of years? Don't they die?" Min Di wondered.
"No. These 'scrap' are still robots at the end of the day. Robots are immortal. However, the ultimate goal of this experiment is to create robots that are indistinguishable from humans, so these robots' programming includes emotions and personalities. They understand 'dignity' and 'death.' They have survived because they wait for death to come with dignity, just like humans. And that 'death' is not far off."
"Not far off? Are you saying they will die soon?" Min Di asked.
Du Fansheng did not answer directly but shifted the topic: "Have you heard the legend of 'Jie Bo'?"
"No," Min Di replied.
"Among these 'scrap,' there is a story that circulates. It is said that when humans first began designing robots, a software named 'Jie Bo' was set in all robots. This software actually sets a predetermined time for death.
When that time arrives, all robots, including those from Hybridization, modified ones, and the final perfect models, will simultaneously activate their self-destruct systems and die together. Humans foresaw this and established the 'Jie Bo' software. If one day humans are conquered by robots, this software will be humanity's ultimate weapon against them."
"The death time is 'four billion three hundred twenty million years.' That is, half an hour from now," Hai Hao suddenly interjected after remaining silent.
"How do you know?" Du Fansheng turned his head in surprise.
"The term 'calamity' refers to a concept of time, indicating Four Billion Three Hundred Twenty Million Years."
Hai Hao recalled the promotional flyer his colleague, disguised as an Indian Snake Charmer, had given him. "Now, only thirty minutes remain until four billion three hundred million years have passed. Earlier in the cell, I heard singing. I thought it was your ritual, but now I understand. It was a solemn song of death."
"No wonder when we entered, we saw those people sitting quietly, hardly moving. They were all waiting for death," Min Di interjected.
"Exactly. When the New Year bell tolls, everyone on this planet, including those who have gone to other planets, will die simultaneously. After accepting death, they will be liberated. In half an hour, it will be the end of the world."
After the old man finished speaking, he turned his head to reveal a tattoo on the back of his head that read "We are all robots." "This tattoo is the mark of all robots. The closer it gets to the time of death, the clearer this tattoo becomes. Yours will too."
Min Di glanced at Hai Hao's head and saw that his tattoo was as bright red as flames.
She said, "I don't have this tattoo on my head. So, does that mean I'm not a robot? I'm purely human?"
"Haha," Du Fansheng sneered a few times. "I've already told you, there are no humans left in this world. Robots have become indistinguishable from humans. You," Du Fansheng stared at Min Di, "are also a robot."
"Impossible!" Min Di exclaimed.
"Take another look at the back of your head."
Hai Hao looked and felt a chill run down his spine.
On the back of Min Di's head, there appeared red tattooed words: "We are all robots."
Du Fansheng said, "The production batch numbers of robots differ, so the appearance time of the tattoos may vary."
Min Di and Hai Hao exchanged a glance.
This also explained why Tang Xuan's tattoo became gradually clearer only after his death.
