"Capture, deceive, eat, rob; day for prostitution, night for gambling, steal," ten glaring characters were written on a piece of paper and posted at the entrance of the Wang family home, summarizing the life of this villain. No one dared to tear it down, as no one considered it slander.
On the fourth day, the police station in Tiaodeng River received a joint letter that left all officers speechless. It spanned over ten pages and contained nearly 300 signatures, all from residents of the Wang family's neighborhood. This letter was not to seek justice for the deceased but rather to request leniency from the judicial authorities for Wang Mingyan.
"As neighbors, we have witnessed Wang Yong's decades-long abuse of his parents and harassment of the community. We believe that while Wang Mingyan's actions were extreme, they are understandable. We earnestly request the court to consider his age and the prolonged mental torment he has suffered and to impose a lighter sentence."
The police conducted a thorough investigation. Wang Yong had multiple criminal records, ranging from theft to intentional injury, and even sexual harassment. In contrast, Wang Mingyan and his wife had countless reports filed with the police, almost all due to being beaten or threatened by their son.
When the public security authorities approached Wang Mingyan's eldest daughter for information, this usually gentle schoolteacher spoke through tears: "My brother is no longer human! He has repeatedly threatened to kill our parents; all of us siblings live in fear. If my father hadn’t gotten hold of that knife that day, it could have been our elderly parents who died!"
The police understood that Wang Mingyan's crime was not born out of malicious intent. In custody, Wang Mingyan seemed to age ten years overnight. He did not defend himself but repeatedly asked, "Is my wife okay? She can’t bear this blow..."
When reporters interviewed other children, they unanimously expressed their support for their father: "We stand by him! Our brother deserved what he got!" Wang Yong's brother was particularly outspoken: "If I had been there that day, I would have acted too!"
The court faced unprecedented public pressure while trying this case. Legally speaking, Wang Mingyan’s actions constituted intentional injury resulting in death; however, from a moral standpoint, how could this tormented elder not be seen as a victim?
Ultimately, considering Wang Mingyan's advanced age, Wang Yong's long history of misconduct, and the fact that the incident occurred during excessive self-defense, the court rendered a relatively lenient verdict. "Though the scales of justice are cold, they are not heartless," wrote the judge in the ruling.
In the end, Wang Mingyan was sentenced to three years in prison. After the verdict was announced, his wife Zhang Lan finally revealed a smile of relief for the first time.
She gently stroked her partner's hand and whispered, "It's all right now, it's all in the past."
"Three years will pass quickly."
Wang Mingyan's eyes brimmed with tears as he gazed out at the blue sky, his lips trembling, unable to speak.
Perhaps at that moment, he recalled the newborn baby from years ago, remembered the hope he felt when he named him "Yong." Perhaps he was thinking about what might have been if things had turned out differently...
The case had finally reached a conclusion, but the reflections it left for society were far from over.
How does an ordinary child gradually transform into a villain that everyone despises?
Why did a model couple face such a tragic fate in their later years?
What went wrong in our family education?
Why did society's intervention mechanisms for "Problem Youth" fail?
More importantly, when familial love becomes a shackle, how do we balance morality and law?
It serves as a reminder to every parent: there are countless ways to express love, but indulgence is certainly not one of them.
To spoil a child is akin to killing them.
