The Legend of the Immortals Prequel: Wilderness Journey
The Cold Pool was bordered by towering stone steps that led directly to Tongfeng, which was also the highest peak of the entire Azure Cloud Mountain Range, Yuqing Palace. In this battle, the astonishing Dao Xuan did not descend the mountain to hunt down the remnants of the demonic sect but instead brought his unconscious master Chengzi back here.
At this moment, within the Quiet Room behind Yuqing Palace, there were only Dao Xuan and Chengzi.
Originally drenched in blood from fierce battles, Chengzi remained unconscious, but he was now clean, clearly having been attended to by his disciple Dao Xuan, who had changed his clothes. He lay on a jade couch, wrapped in soft bedding.
Dao Xuan appeared to have changed into a new outfit as well, still wearing a blue Daoist robe. He sat at the head of the bed, frowning as he looked at Chengzi, a hint of worry etched on his face.
The unconscious Qingyun Sect Master Chengzi did not seem to be in good condition; his eyes were tightly shut, and his expression frequently shifted between fear and anger. Occasionally, he would mumble indistinctly, as if trapped in a nightmare from which he could not escape.
In addition, not far from the head of the bed, two long swords were placed on a table. One was infused with spiritual energy and engraved with seven large stars, which was the protective treasure of Chengzi Zhenren, the Seven Star Sword. The other sword was ancient and unremarkable, neither stone nor iron, with the words “The Legend of the Immortals” engraved on its blade; it was naturally the treasured sword of the Azure Cloud Sect, known as the Ancient Sword of Extermination.
Dao Xuan shifted his gaze away from Chengzi, sighed softly, and stood up to walk to the table. His eyes swept over these two swords that were crucial to the Azure Cloud Sect. The spiritual light flickered—one bright and one dim—as Dao Xuan fell silent, his eyes shimmering as if lost in thought.
While he was deep in contemplation, suddenly there came a sound of footsteps outside the Quiet Room. Moments later, someone knocked on the door and said, “Disciple Chaoyang Peak Shang Zhengliang, pays respects to Master Zhangmen.”
Dao Xuan walked over to open the door and saw a medium-built disciple of the Azure Cloud Sect standing outside. Their eyes met for a moment; the man outside showed a hint of respect on his face and clasped his hands together, saying, “Senior Brother, I wish to see Master Zhangmen. Please inform him for me.”
Dao Xuan shook his head and replied, “Shang Shidi, your timing is unfortunate; Master has not yet awakened.”
Shang Zhengliang exclaimed softly and glanced into the Quiet Room behind Dao Xuan, unable to hide his concern. He whispered, “Is Master Zhangmen alright?”
Dao Xuan glanced at him, his expression calm, revealing little of his emotions. He said lightly, "It's nothing, he must just be too tired. Now that he has gone to sleep, he will be fine after resting for a while."
Shang Zhengliang seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, showing a faint smile as he said, "That's good to hear."
Dao Xuan asked, "Junior Brother Shang, weren't you busy with The Eight Desolations and Six Harmonies? Why did you suddenly come here?"
Shang Zhengliang quickly replied, "It's like this. While I was organizing the battlefield and treating our fellow brothers on The Eight Desolations and Six Harmonies, I accidentally found this item. It seems very important, so I specifically came to present it to Master Zhangmen... Also, Brother, could you take a look and see how we should handle it?"
With that, he took out a dark object from behind him and handed it over.
Dao Xuan reached out to take it and suddenly raised an eyebrow. The object was entirely pitch black with a glossy sheen, resembling ink jade. Its shape was like a banner, and it was unmistakably the Demon Banner that the Demon Cult Leader Qiu Wangyu had wielded during the previous battle between good and evil.
Holding this artifact in his hand brought forth a faint aura of menace, indicating its extraordinary power. However, being an item of evil origin, it was never favored by those of the righteous path. At this moment, Dao Xuan also frowned as he recalled the events of that great battle. Indeed, after Qiu Wangyu was severely injured by the Zhu Xian Ancient Sword, the situation had become chaotic, and no one had noticed the whereabouts of this Demon Cult artifact.
After pondering for a moment, he nodded at Shang Zhengliang and said, "This is the Demon Banner, a significant treasure of the Demon Cult's wickedness. It carries heavy malevolent energy and deep magical power. Your finding it is a great achievement."
Shang Zhengliang's face showed some joy as his attitude became even more respectful. He said, "Then how should we handle this item? Please guide me, Brother."
Dao Xuan thought for a moment and replied, "The Demon Banner belongs to the Demon Cult Leader and is significant. I cannot make a decision on my own; we should wait until Master wakes up to handle it personally. For now, leave the Demon Banner here. Once Master is awake, I will report this matter to him."
Shang Zhengliang was taken aback for a moment but then nodded and said, "Thank you for your trouble, Brother." After pausing briefly, he added, "There are still many matters on The Eight Desolations and Six Harmonies; I will head down now."
Dao Xuan nodded and said, "You may go."
Shang Zhengliang turned to leave, but just as he took a step, a sudden call echoed sharply from the Quiet Room. It was Chengzi's voice, and it sounded somewhat piercing, causing a shiver to run through him.
Shang Zhengliang's body jolted, and he turned back to look, gazing into the Quiet Room alongside Dao Xuan. However, they only saw Chengzi still lying on the bed, eyes tightly shut, covered by the blanket up to his chest. Aside from one hand suddenly reaching out from under the blanket as if trying to grasp something but then falling limply back down, he appeared unchanged. His lips moved slightly as he murmured a few indistinct words that were completely unintelligible.
"What... what happened?" Shang Zhengliang asked in shock, turning to Dao Xuan.
Dao Xuan's expression seemed somewhat grave. After a moment, he said, "It must be that Master is simply too exhausted." He then glanced at Shang Zhengliang.
His gaze was calm and gentle, lacking any intimidating presence. He appeared refined and cultured; however, for some reason, Shang Zhengliang felt a sudden thump in his heart and a chill creeping up his back. He dared not ask further and quietly said, "Then I will take my leave."
"Mm." Dao Xuan replied softly and then watched as Shang Zhengliang quickly walked away. After standing outside for a moment, he returned to the Quiet Room. He casually closed the door behind him and walked over to the bedside table, gently placing the Demon Banner next to the Seven Star Sword and Zhu Xian Ancient Sword.
He silently glanced at the three magical artifacts on the table, revealing a hint of complexity in his expression. Yet no one could discern what thoughts were truly occupying his mind at that moment. After a while, he returned to sit by the bed again, looking at the unconscious Chengzi. He leaned down and carefully tucked Chengzi's exposed arm back under the blanket before sitting back up and gazing at Chengzi, who remained in a daze and occasionally mumbled incoherently. Gradually, concern and urgency began to show in his eyes.
