The late summer weather still carried a hint of heat as Ye Feng sat on a park bench, gazing at Chen Xi on the opposite bench. The sun gradually sank in the west, and the number of passersby began to dwindle, making it an opportune moment for conversation.
"The vulnerabilities in the Identity System can't be tackled by just the two of us," Ye Feng said softly, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Chen Xi adjusted his glasses and habitually scanned the surroundings. "I think so too. We should select a few reliable people."
"I suggest we pick from the Forum; at least those who dare to speak up there are likely dissatisfied with the status quo." Ye Feng took out his phone, opened an encrypted chat app, and pulled up several IDs he had previously marked.
Chen Xi leaned over to take a look, pointing at one ID named Fei Niao. "This person analyzes things very thoroughly on the Forum and writes cautiously—doesn't seem like an impulsive type."
Ye Feng nodded and scrolled to another ID. "This 'Craftsman' is said to be a programmer who is sensitive to system vulnerabilities; we should consider him."
The two spent an entire afternoon meticulously sifting through candidates and ultimately settled on three: Fei Niao, Craftsman, and Doctor. Each had their own expertise: Fei Niao excelled in intelligence analysis, Craftsman was a system expert, and Doctor had emergency medical knowledge that could save lives in critical moments.
"We need to be cautious about how we make contact," Ye Feng said, pulling out a piece of paper and jotting down a few lines. "We'll use 'Rainbow After Rain' as our code phrase, and the response will be 'Sunrise After Clouds.'"
Chen Xi took the note and added, "If we encounter danger, send the words 'Weather Forecast.' Anyone who receives it must evacuate immediately without hesitation."
Ye Feng took a deep breath, feeling as though he were acting in a spy film, but reality was far more brutal than fiction; there was a real risk of death.
Three days later, the five-member team gathered at an abandoned factory. After introductions, Ye Feng got straight to the point. "I've done some reconnaissance; there's a laboratory in the east of the city that looks suspicious. It might be the control center for the Identity Trading System."
Fei Niao, a tall and slender girl appearing to be in her early twenties, pulled out several photos. "I've looked into it; on the surface, it's a Biological Research Institute, but there are often Special Vehicles coming and going late at night."
"I hacked into their Peripheral System; their Security Level is exceptionally high." Craftsman, a middle-aged man wearing Black Frame Glasses, tapped his fingers rhythmically on the table. "But I found an Entry Point; they have personnel rotations every Thursday."
Ye Feng's eyes lit up. "I can use an Identity Transformation Card to replace one of the security guards and sneak in."
Doctor frowned. "That's too dangerous. If you get exposed..."
"There are risks only when there are opportunities." Ye Feng interrupted him, "As long as we can get the surveillance footage and entry records inside, we can find a breakthrough."
The discussion continued late into the night, and the plan was finalized. Ye Feng would be responsible for the infiltration, Chen Xi would handle the perimeter support, and the other three would each take on their respective roles to prepare for the subsequent actions.
On Thursday evening, Ye Feng stood at the alley near the laboratory, pulling out the Identity Transformation Card. According to intelligence, the security guard on duty tonight was named Zhao Gang, around thirty years old, with a height and build similar to Ye Feng's.
"God bless," Ye Feng murmured softly as he activated the Identity Transformation Card.
After a moment of dizziness, his appearance had transformed into that of Zhao Gang. Ye Feng adjusted his uniform and strode confidently toward the laboratory entrance.
"Swipe card, iris recognition, palm print..." Ye Feng mentally recited the steps, relieved that all these details had changed along with his identity.
"Zhao Ge, here so early today?" a colleague at the door greeted him.
Ye Feng feigned nonchalance, "Yeah, came in early for some matters."
Once inside the duty room, Ye Feng let out a slight sigh of relief. According to the plan, he needed to complete his task within two hours. The duty room had an access point for the surveillance system, but it required authorization.
"Zhao Gang should have access..." Ye Feng attempted to log into the system using Zhao Gang's ID and was successful.
He quickly inserted the prepared USB drive and began copying the surveillance footage and entry records. The system was extensive, and copying took time. While waiting, Ye Feng started checking the real-time monitoring screens.
"B3 level... what is that?" Ye Feng noticed an area heavily guarded; a massive machine was faintly visible in the surveillance footage.
After completing the copy process, Ye Feng carefully exited the system and hid the USB drive. He decided to take a risk and check out B3 level.
The elevator required special authorization, so Ye Feng could only use the Fire Escape. He cautiously made his way down to B3 level and quietly pushed open the door, ensuring that the corridor was empty before slipping out.
At the end of the corridor stood a heavy metal door, flanked by a complex identification device. Ye Feng gritted his teeth and attempted to swipe the card under Zhao Gang's identity.
"Insufficient permissions," the system's prompt echoed.
Just as Ye Feng was about to retreat, the door suddenly opened, revealing a man in a white lab coat. Ye Feng immediately stood at attention, pretending to be on duty.
The man in the lab coat scrutinized Ye Feng from head to toe. "Are you new here?"
"Yes, I just arrived not long ago," Ye Feng's heart raced.
"Strange, I didn't receive any notification," the lab-coated man said suspiciously. "What's your name?"
Just as Ye Feng was about to respond, a piercing alarm sounded from a distance.
"What’s going on?" The lab-coated man became alert.
Ye Feng quickly reacted, "I'll go check!" He said before running toward the direction of the alarm, but in reality, he was heading for the exit.
In his earpiece, Chen Xi's urgent voice came through: "We've got a situation, hurry up and retreat! I triggered the fire alarm to create an opportunity for you."
Ye Feng hurried toward the Fire Escape, as chaos erupted throughout the laboratory. He blended into the crowd of evacuees and reached the lobby. Just as he was about to exit, a voice called out to him.
"Zhao Gang! What are you doing here?" A middle-aged supervisor looked at him with confusion. "Aren't you on leave?"
Ye Feng's expression changed; he realized he had been exposed. Without pausing, he quickened his pace and dashed toward the door.
"Stop him!" the supervisor shouted.
Several security guards reacted quickly and lunged toward Ye Feng. He nimbly dodged, taking down two of them and breaking through their encirclement.
"Weather report! Weather report!" Ye Feng shouted urgently into his earpiece, activating the emergency evacuation signal.
He scrambled into a nearby alley, twisting and turning to shake off his pursuers, finally slipping into the back kitchen of a small restaurant and sneaking out through the back door.
Two hours later, the team gathered at the backup safe house. Ye Feng had resumed his identity, looking weary.
"Although the operation didn't go smoothly, we gained quite a bit," Ye Feng said as he handed a USB drive to the technician. "It contains complete surveillance footage and access records."
Chen Xi opened a laptop and began analyzing the data. "We need to hurry; they must have realized someone has infiltrated."
The technician connected the USB drive and quickly sifted through the data. "Look here! This room on the B3 level has frequent personnel movement, but it's all high-level staff."
The screen displayed the very room where Ye Feng had seen that machine in the laboratory.
"That machine..." Ye Feng pointed at the screen. "I believe it's the key device controlling Identity Trade."
Chen Xi nodded. "According to the access records, they perform system maintenance every Monday, during which time the machine temporarily shuts down its defenses."
"That's our opportunity." Ye Feng stood up, determination shining in his eyes. "We must devise a perfect plan before next Monday to take control of that machine and expose the truth behind the entire Identity Trading System."
Outside, night deepened as the wind rustled through the leaves, creating a soft whispering sound, as if silently counting down to the impending storm.
