I stared at the computer screen, my fingers hovering above the keyboard, yet I couldn't bring myself to type a single word. Lin Shan's request weighed on me like a boulder, making it hard to breathe.
"Gu Qing, please help me," Lin Shan's voice came through the headphones, laced with a sob. "I really can't take it anymore."
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. Her pale face and the despair in her eyes flashed in my mind. I knew that if I ignored her, she might do something foolish.
"Alright, I'll give it a try," I finally said, "but I can't guarantee success."
"Thank you, Gu Qing," Lin Shan replied, relief evident in her voice. "I knew you wouldn't just stand by and watch."
I forced a bitter smile. Stand by and watch? This wasn't saving her; it was clearly pushing myself into the fire. But now that I had spoken, I had no choice but to press on.
In the following days, I began to set various obstacles in my dreams, trying to prevent the Nightmare Company from pursuing Lin Shan. I exhausted every trick I had—creating mazes, conjuring illusions, altering landscapes... Yet each time, I underestimated the Nightmare Company's capabilities. They always managed to see through my schemes in no time, as if every move I made was under their control.
After my fifth failed attempt, I slumped in my chair, drenched in sweat. Just then, the office door swung open.
"Gu Qing, come with me," it was Shen Mo. His face was expressionless, but there was a hint of barely concealed anxiety in his eyes.
I followed him into the elevator, my heart racing. The elevator ascended all the way to the top floor—the executive office area of the company.
As he opened the door, I saw several high-ranking officials from the Nightmare Company. Their gazes sent chills down my spine.
"Gu Qing," an elderly man with white hair began, his voice gentle yet undeniably authoritative, "you've been quite busy lately?"
I forced myself to remain calm. "There's been a lot of work..."
"Stop pretending," another middle-aged man interrupted me. "We all know what you're up to."
My heart sank.
The old man sighed, "Gu Qing, you are a good employee and a rare talent. However, there are some matters that do not concern you."
"I..." I was about to speak, but he raised his hand to stop me.
"We do not wish to harm you," the old man continued, "but if you insist on meddling in the company's affairs, do not blame us for being unkind."
A chill crept up from my feet, spreading throughout my body. I suddenly realized that I was standing at the edge of a cliff, with no way back.
As I walked out of the conference room, I trembled all over. Shen Mo patted my shoulder, hesitating to say anything.
"Be careful," he finally said before hurriedly leaving.
Back at my workstation, I began frantically searching for any evidence that could prove the crimes of the Nightmare Company. But every time I felt I had grasped something, it slipped away like sand through my fingers.
I tried to reach out to other Dream Architects, hoping to find like-minded individuals. However, most chose to side with Shen Mo; some even hung up the phone on me directly. I could hear the fear in their voices—they were afraid of offending the higher-ups, afraid of losing their high-paying jobs, and even more afraid of becoming the next Lin Shan.
Just when I was about to give up, an unexpected discovery reignited my hope. I accidentally overheard two executives arguing, and from their fragmented words, I realized there was intense factional strife within the Nightmare Company. Even more surprising was that Shen Mo seemed to represent another faction.
This revelation plunged me into deeper confusion. Who should I trust? Was Shen Mo really reliable? Or was this just another larger trap?
As I hesitated, Shen Mo approached me.
"Gu Qing, I know what you're investigating," he said in a lowered voice. "I can help you."
I looked at him warily. "Why would you help me?"
Shen Mo gave a wry smile. "Because our goals are aligned."
He handed me a USB drive. "There are some things in here that you might find interesting. Use it carefully."
That night, I eagerly examined the contents of the USB drive. Inside were secret meeting records from the company's upper management, along with a list of manipulated clients. These documents revealed just the tip of the iceberg of the "Nightmare" company's conspiracy and made me realize how dangerously entangled I had become.
The next day, I contacted Lin Shan, and we devised a plan to escape from this nightmare. The plan was fraught with risks; one misstep could lead to irreparable consequences. But for Lin Shan, this might be the only chance.
"Are you really going to do this?" Lin Shan asked me, concern lacing her voice.
I forced a smile. "There's no turning back now."
After hanging up, an unprecedented wave of fear washed over me. I didn't know if I would succeed in escaping or what the "Nightmare" company would do to me. But I knew I had to try.
Just then, my computer screen flickered, and an encrypted message popped up: "Be careful, they already know. Run!"
My heart skipped a beat. Was it Shen Mo? Or someone else? There was no time to think; I grabbed my coat and dashed out of the office.
In the elevator, my palms were sweaty. I had no idea what awaited me, but I knew that from this moment on, my life would change forever.
The elevator doors slowly opened, and I took a deep breath before stepping out.
Whether ahead lay heaven or hell, I had no other choice.
