"I..."
"Su Xiao Qiao," Chen Yaoyao patted my shoulder, "just admit it if you like him. What's the big deal? I can see that Jiang Chi is not indifferent to you either."
"He treats me well just because we're acting," I insisted stubbornly.
"Does acting require this level of care? Does acting need you to look at him so tenderly? Does acting involve taking care of you so meticulously?" Chen Yaoyao fired back with a series of questions.
I was at a loss for words.
Yeah, does acting require that?
Perhaps... he really...
I dared not think any further.
As the bonfire party was coming to an end, Jiang Chi stumbled over, reeking of alcohol, and plopped down beside me, resting his head on my shoulder.
"Su Xiao Qiao..." he mumbled, his voice slurred.
"You've had too much to drink," I said, pushing him away in annoyance.
But he seemed to have no bones, clinging to me instead and wrapping his arms around my waist.
"Don't move... let me lean for a bit..."
His breath tickled my neck, warm and slightly intoxicating.
My body stiffened instantly.
The noise around us seemed to fade away; all I could hear was the pounding of my own heart.
The faint scent of alcohol mixed with his naturally pleasant fragrance lingered at my nose.
"Jiang Chi..." I called him softly.
He didn’t respond; he seemed to have fallen asleep.
I gazed at his sleeping face so close to mine. His long eyelashes cast a small shadow on his eyelids, and his lips were slightly pursed.
Without thinking, I reached out to touch his cheek.
Just as my fingertips were about to make contact with his skin, he suddenly opened his eyes.
Our gazes locked.
His gaze was clear, showing no signs of intoxication. In that moment, the air seemed to freeze. I felt like a thief caught in the act, instinctively retracting my hand as if shocked, my heart racing so fast it felt like it might leap out of my throat.
He didn’t speak, just stared at me intently, his eyes deep and swirling with emotions I couldn’t comprehend. After a long pause, he finally spoke slowly, his voice slightly hoarse, “Su Xiao Qiao, do you… like me?”
Boom—
My mind went blank. How could he… how could he know? I had hidden it so well…
“I… I don’t! You’ve had too much to drink!” I denied it in a panic, avoiding his gaze and unable to look him in the eye.
But he reached out, firmly turning my face to force me to meet his gaze. “Look into my eyes and say it again.”
His eyes were sharp as knives, as if they could pierce through all my facades. I opened my mouth but couldn’t utter a single word. My eyes stung with heat, and feelings of grievance and embarrassment surged within me.
Yes, I liked him; I had for many years. But did this affection seem ridiculous to him? Did it trouble him?
He noticed the redness in my eyes, and his expression softened. He sighed and released his grip.
“Alright, pretend I didn’t ask.” His voice carried a hint of weariness as he turned his gaze away.
The atmosphere became painfully awkward. The colleagues around us had already begun to pack up, preparing to head back to the hotel. Neither of us spoke again; we silently stood up and followed the crowd.
On the way back, we walked side by side, separated by an invisible divide. The evening breeze blew in, carrying the chill from the mountains. I tightened my coat around me, feeling a coldness settle in my heart.
It’s over, everything is over. He knows now, and we can’t even be friends anymore. I shouldn’t have agreed to this ridiculous proposal from the start!
Back in the hotel room, I threw myself onto the bed and covered my head with the blanket. Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.
I don’t know how long it had been when there was a knock on the door. I ignored it.
