Days passed quietly in a facade of "pretending." My mother was completely convinced of our "relationship" and even began to subtly inquire about when we would get married. Each time, I deflected her questions with, "We're still young, no rush."
On Jiang Chi's side, it seemed his father had also accepted our relationship, no longer bringing up Lin Wei. Everything appeared to be heading in a positive direction. But only I knew that my heart was becoming increasingly chaotic.
Watching Jiang Chi's attentive "care," listening to his occasional flirtatious remarks, and feeling his increasingly natural gestures of intimacy... I was starting to lose track of what was acting and what was real. The first rule we had set—"no physical contact"—had long been broken by him through various "accidents" and moments of "uncontrollable feelings."
For instance, he would hold my hand while crossing the street, rest my head on his shoulder during movies, and even once, when I had cream on the corner of my mouth, he instinctively reached out to wipe it away without a second thought. Each touch felt like an electric current coursing through my body, leaving me flustered.
I had warned him several times to be mindful of boundaries. Each time he would respond with a cheeky grin, only to repeat the same mistakes later. "It's acting; it has to be convincing, or how can we fool someone with your mother's sharp eyes?" He always had an excuse ready.
I found myself at a loss for words.
That day, our company organized a team-building event in the mountains of a neighboring city. Jiang Chi naturally came along as my "partner." One of the activities involved navigating obstacles while blindfolded, and we were paired together.
I covered my eyes, plunging into darkness.
"Don't be afraid; just follow my voice," Jiang Chi's calm and steady voice resonated ahead of me. I extended my hand cautiously, feeling my way forward.
"Step left a bit... yes... now take three steps forward... stop! There's an obstacle ahead; lift your foot..."
He guided me patiently, his voice always clear. Gradually, my heart settled down. In the darkness, his voice became my only source of reassurance.
Suddenly, my feet slipped, and I let out a gasp as my body uncontrollably fell forward. The anticipated pain never came; instead, I landed in a warm, sturdy embrace. It was Jiang Chi.
He held me tightly, and I could clearly hear his strong heartbeat and feel the warmth radiating from his chest. Around us, my colleagues erupted in cheers and whistles. My cheeks flushed with heat as I struggled to stand up.
He didn’t immediately let go; instead, he leaned down and whispered something in my ear. The noise around us was too loud for me to catch it.
"What did you say?" I asked, looking up at him.
He had already released me, steadying me on my feet while wearing his usual teasing smile. "Nothing, just complimenting your agility."
I looked at him suspiciously.
After the activities concluded, the evening brought a bonfire party. Everyone gathered around the fire, singing and dancing, creating a lively atmosphere. Jiang Chi was pulled away by a few male colleagues for a drinking game while I sat alone in a corner, staring blankly at the flickering flames.
Chen Yaoyao came over and handed me a can of beer. "What are you thinking about? You seem lost."
"Nothing," I replied, taking a sip of the beer.
"Still worried about Lin Wei?"
I shook my head.
"Then what is it..." Chen Yaoyao stretched her voice playfully, "Are you about to turn pretend into reality?"
I was startled and nearly choked on my beer. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
"Oh come on," Chen Yaoyao rolled her eyes at me. "You might hide your little thoughts from others, but not from me! Just look at how you're gazing at Jiang Chi; it's practically oozing!"
