One day, my mom excitedly called me, "Qiao Qiao, I signed you up for a baking class! You can learn to make some snacks this weekend!"
"Ah? Mom, I don't have time..."
"What do you mean you don't have time? Just take your boyfriend with you! It's a great way to bond!" My mom hung up before I could protest.
I looked at my phone, feeling helpless.
When I told Jiang Chi about it, he seemed quite interested. "Baking? Sure, let's go have some fun."
So, that weekend, we found ourselves in the baking classroom.
It was clear that Jiang Chi was new to this; he wore a pink bear apron and clumsily cracked eggs, flour covering his face like a husky that had just crawled out of a flour bin.
I couldn't help but laugh and took out my phone to snap a picture.
"Su Xiao Qiao, stop laughing!" He glared at me and grabbed a handful of flour, ready to throw it my way.
I laughed and dodged, turning the classroom into a chaotic scene.
The teacher was a gentle young lady who approached Jiang Chi to guide him. "This student, remember to whip the cream in one direction."
Jiang Chi rarely showed embarrassment but obediently followed her instructions.
Once the cake base was baked, we started frosting and decorating. Jiang Chi displayed an astonishing... level of destruction in this area.
While others crafted delicate and cute cakes, his was crooked and messy, the frosting looking like it had been chewed by a dog, with a strawberry jam grin drawn on top.
"All done!" He proudly showcased his creation to me.
I stifled my laughter. "Master Jiang, is this... abstract art?"
"You wouldn't understand; this is called soul painting."
Though it was ugly, it was still made by him. I took a photo and posted it on social media with the caption: "Someone's debut work—adorably ugly."
Not long after, I received a comment from Lin Wei: "A Chi is learning to make cakes now? He never touched these before."
There was also a thoughtful emoji following her comment.
I stared at the message, feeling as if I had been pricked by a needle.
Lost in thought, Jiang Chi leaned over to look at my phone. "Who is it?"
I quickly put my phone away. "It's nothing."
He cast a doubtful glance at me but didn’t press further. After packing the finished cake to take with us, we stepped out of the baking classroom, where the sunlight was just right. Jiang Chi held the ugly cake and walked beside me.
“Su Xiao Qiao,” he suddenly stopped and said, “you don’t seem very happy today.”
“Do I?” I looked up at him; the sunlight was blinding, making it hard to see his expression.
“Is it because of Lin Wei?” he asked directly.
I fell silent.
He sighed and reached out to ruffle my hair, his gesture so natural as if he had done it a thousand times before. “I told you not to think too much. I’ve moved on from her long ago.”
“Did you… really date before?” I couldn’t help but ask.
He paused for a moment before nodding. “It was a short time. Back in college.”
Just as I thought.
“Then… why did you break up?”
“We were incompatible,” he replied succinctly, seeming unwilling to elaborate.
I looked at him, feeling a mix of emotions. It turned out he wasn’t a blank slate; he had a past, stories I didn’t know about. And I realized that I was merely a “shield” he used to deal with his family and his past.
This realization made me feel uneasy.
“Let’s go,” he didn’t give me a chance to ask more questions, grabbing my wrist and pulling me forward. “I’ll take you to eat something delicious.”
His hand was warm, and his strides were long. Being half-dragged along, I watched his broad back and for the first time began to doubt my decision to pretend to be his girlfriend.
