For many years, I secretly harbored feelings for my childhood friend, Jiang Chi. Unfortunately, in his eyes, I was just one of the guys—a girl who could climb trees and dig bird nests with him as a child, and later, pull all-nighters playing video games. Our friendship was rock-solid, but it never sparked any romantic feelings. Now, with my mother ready to push me into the marriage market and turn me into this year’s "hard-to-match" sample, I felt utterly despondent. I was contemplating whether I should pack my bags and run away from the relentless matchmaking pressure from my aunts and uncles.
But then, out of nowhere, Jiang Chi showed up today with a face so handsome it could incite envy among gods and men. He casually leaned against my doorframe, a lollipop dangling from his mouth, and said nonchalantly, "Hey, Su Xiao Qiao, how about we pretend to date for a while? It’ll help us deal with the marriage pressure from our families."
My ice-cold cola fell to the ground with a loud crash, spilling everywhere.
Wait a minute—was he feeling alright today?
I reached out instinctively to check his forehead.
Jiang Chi swatted my hand away in disdain. "What are you doing? I'm perfectly fine."
"Perfectly fine? You’re saying that while suggesting such nonsense?" I pointed at him. "Jiang Chi, have you been secretly reading some domineering CEO romance novels behind my back? Us? Pretending to date? Do you really think my mom would fall for that?"
My mom was renowned within a ten-mile radius as the "expert in spotting fakes." Trying to fool her was as difficult as climbing Mount Everest without any gear.
Jiang Chi shrugged nonchalantly. "Why not give it a try? You don’t have any other options, do you? Besides, with our relationship, acting like a couple should be easy."
He looked so confident as if pretending to be a couple was a done deal with a 100% success rate.
I stared at his face, my heart skipping a beat. The idea of pretending to be his girlfriend… it was tempting—damn it, very tempting.
But reason told me this was definitely a trap. What if my hidden feelings ignited uncontrollably while we were acting? What if he suddenly decided to back out halfway through? My mom would surely turn me into minced meat!
"No way, no way; the risks are too high," I shook my head vigorously.
Jiang Chi clicked his tongue and leaned in closer, his handsome face filling my vision. "Su Xiao Qiao, just tell me how much pressure your mom has been putting on you lately. Wouldn’t it be better to try this than to be dragged off to meet those mismatched suitors? I promise you’ll receive top-notch service; I’ll be there whenever you need me during our little act."
He paused for a moment and added in a lower voice with an enticing tone, "Besides, dating me wouldn’t be such a loss, would it?"
I looked into his charming eyes and swallowed hard.
Loss? How could there be any loss! It would be an absolute steal!
Two little voices began battling in my head. One shouted, "Go for it! You won’t find another chance like this!" The other cried out, "Stay calm! This is just sugar-coated poison; it leads to an abyss!"
In the end, the allure of his charm won over my fear of the future.
"…Fine," I gritted my teeth. "But we need some ground rules!"
"You say," Jiang Chi replied with a smirk that suggested he had already won.
"First rule: No physical contact whatsoever—not even holding hands!" I raised one finger.
"Okay," he agreed readily.
"Second rule: We must present a united front and say we developed feelings over time—no one can slip up!"
"Not a problem."
"The third and most important point," I took a deep breath, "once the mission is complete, we disband. No one is allowed to take things too seriously or develop any feelings beyond friendship!"
As I said this, I felt a pang of guilt, my gaze wandering, unable to meet his eyes.
