Despairing in the darkness, Hui Nai suddenly thought of calling Qing He. Just as some people rely on medication to cope with insomnia, Hui Nai had grown accustomed to seeking help from Qing He over the past few months.
Whenever a problem arose, she would turn to Qing He to confide in him.
Of course, those problems usually stemmed from her relationship with Ryoji.
Once the call connected, a slightly weary yet tense voice came through on the other end. After all, it was late at night, and a call at this hour suggested an urgent situation.
"Hui Nai, what's wrong? Why aren't you asleep at this hour?"
Immersed in overwhelming sorrow, Hui Nai struggled to breathe, her voice choked with tears. "Qing He, Ryoji wants to break up with me... I feel like I can't go on without him. I would die without him. But now, he wants to end things..." As she recounted what had just happened, Hui Nai felt her breath growing shallow. Her health had been poor lately, and although the doctor had prescribed medication, she often forgot to take it.
Qing He worked hard to maintain his composure; he sensed the gravity of the situation. "Hui Nai, please try to pull yourself together. Arguments between lovers are quite common, aren't they? You and Ryoji have had your share of disagreements before; how can you talk about life and death over something like this?"
"This time is different. We've never talked about breaking up before. This time it's irreversible..."
After a moment of contemplation, Qing He said, "How about this? If you don't mind me intruding, I'll come over right away to talk to Ryoji and check on you. Maybe there's a chance for things to turn around."
With no better options available—indeed, neither of them could think of any—Qing He decided to head over to Hui Nai and Ryoji's place.
Before long, Qing He stood at Hui Nai's door. Concern etched across his face as he looked at Hui Nai's pale complexion, Doctor Qing He spoke gently: "Hui Nai, you look really unwell. You need to rest."
Hui Nai shook her head lightly, tears streaming down her face in a pitiful manner. "This situation is enough to destroy me. I fear that even resting won't be enough."
Qing He frowned, "Where is Ryoji?"
Hui Nai pointed towards the kitchen.
Ryoji lay half on the floor, completely drunk and unresponsive. It seemed he had suffered greatly from this state.
Sighing, Qing He reflected on how the two of them were clearly in love yet chose to hurt each other so deeply. As a seasoned psychologist, he could only shake his head in helplessness when faced with the complexities of emotions.
He hadn't expected Ryoji to be this far gone; how could he even begin to offer guidance?
Qing He walked over to help Ryoji up, gently calling out, "Hirota-kun."
Hearing the voice, Ryoji opened his eyes from his drunken stupor. "Ah, it's you."
Qing He replied, "Yes, it's me, Sei River Tadao. How are you feeling, Hirota-kun?"
"I'm just fine! By the way, how did you suddenly show up at my house?" Although his tone was clearly unfriendly, it seemed Ryoji's mind was still relatively clear.
Qing He felt that there was still room for discussion.
"I came here regarding the situation between you and Hui Nai," he said carefully. "Hui Nai called me late at night, saying you suddenly proposed a breakup. She is very upset about it and feels utterly devastated. As her psychologist and friend, I came to check on things. I also hope to persuade you not to make such a decision. This would be detrimental for both you and Hui Nai..."
However, before he could finish, Ryoji interrupted rudely, "So you decided to run over to someone else's house in the middle of the night? Doctor Qing He, don't you think that's a bit overbearing? I could report you for trespassing."
Qing He remained patient. "I just want to comfort Hui Nai a little, so she doesn't become too sad and hurt her health. I also want to persuade Ryoji that this behavior is unnecessary and inappropriate. After all, after so many years of feelings, Hui Nai loves you deeply."
Ryoji simply replied with impatience, "Do I need you to tell me these things? Since when did my relationship with Hui Nai become something for an outsider to meddle in? Does Doctor Qing He think that just because Hui Nai and I broke up, there's an opportunity for you to step in? Oh, from what I've observed, it seems that Doctor Qing He has quite the fondness for Hui Nai. And as for Hui Nai, she seems to like Sei River Tadao a lot, no wonder she's become so cold towards me."
Drunk, Ryoji paid no mind to the feelings of the two people present, rambling on proudly without noticing that Hui Nai's face had already lost its color.
However, for Qing He, this was intolerable. "Hirota-kun, please watch your words and tone. There is only a pure friendship between Hui Nai and me. Do not slander her."
Ryoji scoffed coldly. "Is that so? If you're just friends, why go to such lengths to defend her? Coming here in the middle of the night to play mediator? Don't think I don't know why Hui Nai visits your clinic so often. It's not because she's sick; she just wants to see you."
It turned out that Ryoji had long harbored grievances about this but had kept them hidden until now.
