In the dimly lit alley, three masked figures armed with weapons closed in, their eyes gleaming with greed and malice. The air felt as if it had solidified, leaving only Lin Wei's rapid breaths and the thunderous beating of her heart.
"Want money?" Jiang Tao's voice was cold as he pulled the panicked Lin Wei behind him, shielding her in a relatively safe corner of the wall. "Let's see if you have the life to take it!"
In his past life, as an engineer involved in classified projects, he may not have been a professional fighter, but years spent in a high-stakes environment had honed an extraordinary calmness and a keen instinct for danger. Moreover, after his rebirth, he sensed that his physical abilities had been enhanced to some degree, with reflexes and strength far surpassing that of an ordinary person.
"Damn it! Still acting tough! Brothers, go! Quick and decisive!" The leader of the knife-wielding thugs clearly underestimated Jiang Tao, who appeared somewhat frail. With a sneer, he lunged forward first! The other two flanked him on either side, swinging iron rods with brutal intent—clearly seasoned criminals.
Lin Wei shut her eyes in fear, gripping Jiang Tao's arm tightly.
Just as the blade was about to strike, Jiang Tao moved! His body instinctively ducked to the left, narrowly avoiding the lethal blow. At the same time, he flicked his right wrist; a thick wire that he had kept in his pocket from earlier work shot out like a snake striking its prey. With a sharp "crack," it struck the thug's wrist with precision!
"Ah!" The thug screamed in agony as the dagger slipped from his grasp and fell to the ground.
Before the other two could react, Jiang Tao surged forward. With a swift side kick, he struck the knee of the thug on his left who was swinging an iron rod! A sharp "crunch" echoed along with a cry as that thug collapsed to the ground, clutching his leg and incapacitated.
The thug on the right hesitated for a moment before furiously swinging his iron rod at Jiang Tao's head. Instead of retreating, Jiang Tao advanced. He stepped forward sharply, closing the distance so that the thug's swing missed entirely. In one fluid motion, his left hand shot out like lightning, grabbing the thug's wrist and twisting it forcefully!
The thug felt a jolt of pain shoot through his wrist as he involuntarily released his grip on the iron rod, stumbling forward due to inertia. Seizing the opportunity, Jiang Tao unleashed a powerful elbow strike directly into the thug's ribs!
"Ugh!" The thug groaned as if all air had been knocked out of him, curling up on the ground like a shrimp.
In just over ten seconds, all three aggressive thugs lay groaning on the ground, stripped of their ability to fight back.
The alley fell into an eerie silence once more, broken only by the thugs' pained moans and Lin Wei's hurried breaths.
Jiang Tao himself was slightly out of breath; adrenaline surged through him, mingling excitement with fear. He shook his slightly numb right hand and glanced down at himself—thankfully, he had only sustained a minor bruise from an iron rod grazing his arm.
He turned quickly to embrace Lin Wei tightly in his arms as she continued to tremble. "It's okay now, Weiwei. Don't be afraid; it's all over."
Slowly opening her eyes to see the three thugs lying on the ground, Lin Wei looked up at Jiang Tao with shock and fear mingled with an unexpected hint of admiration. She never imagined that this usually gentle and somewhat scholarly Jiang Tao could be so decisive and even ruthless when it came down to it.
"Are you... are you hurt?" Lin Wei asked with a quivering voice as she scanned Jiang Tao for injuries. "Did they... did they hurt you?"
"I'm fine; just a little scratch—nothing serious," Jiang Tao reassured her while patting her back gently. "But you... are you okay? Not too scared?"
Lin Wei shook her head but couldn't stop her body from trembling.
"We shouldn't stay here long." Jiang Tao glanced at the thugs on the ground; although they were incapacitated, who knew if they had accomplices or if police would be drawn to the scene? He quickly kicked away their fallen knives and iron rods into a pile of trash deeper in the alley before taking Lin Wei's hand firmly. "Let's go!"
