The person who arrived was King Ren and Li Wangcai.
The moment Pei Guanjing caught sight of Li Wangcai, his expression tightened. Instinctively, he reached back to shield Ye Chen behind him and said coldly, “What does King Ren mean by this? Are you planning to make a move?”
King Ren glanced at Ye Chen and Pei Guanjing, then suddenly threw his head back and laughed recklessly. “Pei Guanjing, Pei Guanjing, I never expected you to have a day where you are troubled by love. Since you know that I have set up a trap in king Ren’s Manor, how dare you come here alone? You are too arrogant to disregard my authority, hmph!”
“Archers, prepare!” King Ren commanded sharply with a wave of his hand.
As soon as he finished speaking, a line of archers swiftly stepped forward, raising their bows in unison, their arrows aimed directly at Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen. The atmosphere became tense in an instant.
“ King Ren doesn’t really think I came here alone, does he?”
A cold smile curled at the corners of Pei Guanjing's mouth as he mockingly took out a bamboo tube from his waist. With a gentle tug on the string, fireworks shot up into the air with a whoosh, exploding with a sharp sound in the silent sky.
In that moment, the soldiers hidden in the valley erupted into action, shouting in unison, “Kill!”
The roar was deafening, as if it could pierce through the clouds.
“Not good, there’s an ambush!” King Ren's face changed dramatically as he sensed the danger. His heart raced; he wanted to capture Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen as hostages immediately. But just then, an arrow shot out like lightning, heading straight for Pei Guanjing.
Pei Guanjing reacted quickly; with a flick of his sleeve, he deflected the deadly shot and casually tossed the arrow aside.
That arrow was like the signal for battle. In an instant, all the archers unleashed a rain of arrows toward Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen. Realizing he couldn’t withstand the barrage, Pei Guanjing had no time to think. He tightly embraced Ye Chen and leaped into the rushing river below, disappearing in an instant.
“Damn it! Who ordered you to shoot?” King Ren cursed angrily, his face contorted with rage.
But it was too late; all he could do was mutter curses as he hurriedly led his men to retreat. If they were trapped here, it would truly be a dead end.
Ye Chen’s swimming skills were average at best. Falling into such turbulent waters made him feel like a helpless leaf, nearly swept away by the raging current.
In his panic, Pei Guanjing quickly tied their belts together and held Ye Chen tightly with one arm as he swam vigorously toward the nearest shore.
Ye Chen swallowed several mouthfuls of water; his nose and throat burned painfully. He couldn’t feel the bottom beneath his feet as his body sank deeper into the water, fear creeping into his heart. But thankfully, Pei Guanjing was there beside him, holding him firmly.
However, while thrashing about in the water, Ye Chen bumped against something hard. Instinctively looking down, he noticed that an arrow had struck Pei Guanjing's back; blood oozed from the wound and mingled with the river water before being swiftly washed away by the current.
"You... you're hurt..." Ye Chen said, tilting his head back with difficulty. His voice was choppy, strained by the water he had swallowed. "Let go of me quickly; you... you can still get to shore."
"Don't talk nonsense. I promised I would protect you, and I will never go back on my word. Ye Chen, trust me." Pei Guanjing gasped for breath and suddenly kissed Ye Chen's forehead.
After that, Pei Guanjing adjusted his grip, cradling Ye Chen in his lap like a child, lifting his body above the water's surface. However, this brought them into closer physical contact, making Ye Chen a bit anxious as he clung tightly to Pei Guanjing's neck.
Ye Chen was surprisingly compliant, which was different from his usual self.
Pei Guanjing began to swim toward the riverbank with Ye Chen in tow. But they were heavy together, and with Pei Guanjing injured, every time they neared the shore, the rushing current would push them back. After several attempts, Ye Chen held his breath, afraid to disturb Pei Guanjing.
To prevent Pei Guanjing from exhausting himself further, Ye Chen refrained from asking him to let go. He could see the dark expression on Pei Guanjing's face; it was terrifying enough that he felt if he mentioned untying the knot around his waist, Pei Guanjing might strangle him in the next moment.
The autumn river water was bone-chillingly cold, and the wet clothes clung tightly to their bodies, making it extremely uncomfortable.
They swam for what felt like an eternity until they were finally close to the shore. But just as they reached it, Pei Guanjing used up his last ounce of strength and fainted.
Seeing the riverbank drift away with the current made Ye Chen panic. He called out Pei Guanjing's name loudly, but there was no response; Pei Guanjing had already lost consciousness. It was understandable—he was already injured and had been shot with an arrow; managing to swim this far was a testament to his willpower.
Now, if he just untied this knot, he could escape to shore while Pei Guanjing would unknowingly sink to the bottom of the river. No one would ever know his identity again, and he could live a peaceful life.
But… Ye Chen hesitated.
To say he had no feelings for Pei Guanjing would be a lie; after all, they had spent so much time together.
Yet to claim it was merely a master-disciple relationship would not do justice to what had developed between them. Did Pei Guanjing really need to risk his life for him?
Deep down, Ye Chen asked himself: had there ever been a moment when he wasn't moved by Pei Guanjing?
With a tearing sound in his heart, it felt as if a crack had opened up inside him. All those emotions he had deliberately ignored surged forth like a tide.
Pei Guanjing was heavier than Ye Chen. Without untying the knot, they began to sink beneath the water.
Their figures bobbed up and down in the water, dark hair swirling around them and obscuring their vision of each other.
Ye Chen's fingers traced along the sensation, finding Pei Guanjing's nose, causing a wave of panic to surge within him. In the next moment, as if summoning immense courage, he tugged at Pei Guanjing's collar and pressed his lips against the corner of his mouth.
The last breath of air slipped into Pei Guanjing's mouth.
The cool touch of their lips sent a shiver through Pei Guanjing, who instantly opened his eyes to see Ye Chen with his eyes closed, trembling as he kissed him. He glanced down and noticed that the knot at their waists remained tied, and Ye Chen had not pulled away.
At that moment, time seemed to stand still; the rushing river and their perilous situation faded from their minds, leaving only the two of them.
Pei Guanjing's gaze darkened.
Since you didn't let go of me this time, you can't let go of me in the future, A Chen.
Suddenly, a fierce intrusion of lips invaded his mouth, stealing away his breath. Ye Chen opened his eyes in shock to find Pei Guanjing cradling his face and smiling gently at him.
How did he wake up?
Ye Chen momentarily forgot they were underwater and instinctively pushed Pei Guanjing away with all his strength. Water rushed into his mouth, and he immediately struggled to breathe, clutching his throat tightly as panic widened his pupils, fear filling his eyes.
Seeing this, Pei Guanjing quickly wrapped an arm around Ye Chen's waist and propelled them upward. When they reached the shore, Pei Guanjing used the last of his strength to push Ye Chen onto the bank.
During this process, his fingers inadvertently brushed against Ye Chen's backside; it was meant to help him gain leverage as he climbed up. Ye Chen thought nothing of it. However, taking advantage of Ye Chen's lack of reaction, Pei Guanjing stealthily took a few more liberties with the slightly plump sensation, a hint of mischief flashing across his face.
