The familiar yet cold voice was unmistakable. Ye Chen froze, his hand holding the broom paused slightly before he suddenly turned around.
In the twilight, Pei Guanjing stood with a halo of light behind him, making him appear both blurry and distinctly visible.
Ye Chen's voice trembled as disbelief washed over him. "What are you doing here? This is King Ren’s Manor. How did you get in?"
Before Pei Guanjing could explain, shouts of "Fire!" echoed from within King Ren’s Manor. Following the sound, they saw flames erupting from the southeast corner, the fire raging high as thick smoke quickly billowed upward.
"Come with me, Ye Chen. There's no time to explain." Without further ado, Pei Guanjing grabbed Ye Chen's arm and tried to rush outside.
But Ye Chen caught him by the wrist and shouted, "What do you mean by this? Are you just putting on a show again? Which face of yours is the real one, Pei Guanjing? We've known each other for a year, yet I feel like I've never understood what you truly think. Regent is your adoptive father, King Ren is your savior—what about me? Did you marry me just to become King Huai'an's son-in-law?"
As Ye Chen spoke, his emotions grew more intense; his eyes glistened with unshed tears, looking both wronged and pitiful.
A flicker of shock passed through Pei Guanjing's eyes, but this was not the time for explanations. He tightened his grip on Ye Chen's hand and lifted him effortlessly into his arms, leaping onto the roof tiles with agility and strength.
"Shh, I know what you want to ask, but now is not the time for that. Once we’re in a safe place, I’ll explain everything," Pei Guanjing said softly while keeping a vigilant eye on their surroundings.
Before Ye Chen could retort again, Pei Guanjing led him through a series of evasive maneuvers, skillfully avoiding the hidden guards placed within the manor and successfully escaping.
The journey ahead was relatively smooth.
As dusk faded into night, they moved swiftly under the cover of darkness. Aside from a few times when Ye Chen stumbled in the dim light and Pei Guanjing caught him just in time, they managed to endure until dawn.
Ye Chen walked alone along the riverbank, his pace hurried as he never once looked back at Pei Guanjing. Meanwhile, Pei Guanjing silently followed behind, his gaze fixed intently on Ye Chen’s figure.
After many days apart, it seemed that his youth had grown increasingly irritable. Was he blaming him for not protecting him well enough?
Pei Guanjing slightly lowered his head, his right hand unconsciously lifting, then slowly clenching into a fist, a flicker of barely perceptible darkness flashing in his eyes. In this chaotic world, perhaps only by grasping power could he ensure the safety of both himself and Ye Chen.
Walking ahead, Ye Chen was sulking alone. In truth, he didn’t even know where to go; he just wanted to distance himself from Pei Guanjing. The mere thought of Pei Guanjing made him feel uneasy; even without looking back, he was acutely aware that Pei Guanjing was closely following behind him.
Suddenly, Ye Chen slipped and cried out, “Ah!” as he felt himself about to fall. In that critical moment, Pei Guanjing took several long strides forward, swiftly extending his arms to catch Ye Chen securely in his embrace before steadying himself.
Once Ye Chen regained his footing, Pei Guanjing did not release him. His right hand gently brushed against Ye Chen's slightly pale cheek, and a sharp pain pierced his heart as if something were blocking it.
“A Chen,” he called softly, his voice filled with endless longing and guilt. After saying this, he tightened his hold on Ye Chen as if trying to merge him into his very being.
However, Ye Chen struggled desperately in his arms.
He was both angry and frustrated. What was wrong with Pei Guanjing? Why did he always hug him out of nowhere, startling him each time? Moreover, after everything that had happened before, Pei Guanjing still hadn’t offered any explanations; all he did was hold him close as if he thought Ye Chen would forget everything just because of a little affection!
Reflecting on the nine months spent with Pei Guanjing at the Military Camp, although he sometimes acted foolishly and playfully and occasionally slacked off from work, he had always held deep respect for Pei Guanjing as his Master. Hadn’t he followed every command given by Pei Guanjing?
Even after learning about their engagement, he had never considered running away from it. He had been diligently fulfilling the alliance set by King Huai'an and the Regent; he didn’t want to put either side in a difficult position or cause turmoil. Yet the unpredictable nature of the world led to situations he never wished for; now King Ren insisted on meddling and throwing everything into chaos.
Now that the world was in turmoil with General He dead and Xiao Feng unlikely to gain support for claiming the throne despite regaining his identity—after all, many harbored ulterior motives and sought to manipulate the emperor to control the lords.
Moreover, Ye Chen was curious about Xiao Feng’s whereabouts; it had been a year without a trace. Surely he hadn’t truly perished in some remote valley!
As Ye Chen remained in Pei Guanjing's embrace, the warm breath mingled with a faint scent of Haitang Fragrance wafted into his nose. Pei Guanjing leaned against Ye Chen's neck like a traveler lost in a desert finally finding an oasis, tenderly pressing his face against him and exhaling warm air near his Heavenly Mandate before taking a deep breath as if trying to imprint everything about Ye Chen into his heart.
"A Chen, I've missed you so much during this time. I've been thinking about you every day." Pei Guanjing's voice was hoarse and seductive, sounding as if he hadn't rested properly in a long while.
Upon hearing this, Ye Chen felt a wave of discomfort wash over him, goosebumps rising on his skin. A chill ran down his spine, and he couldn't help but shudder. Struggling in Pei Guanjing's embrace, he tried to push him away and exclaimed loudly, "I don't want to hear this."
As Ye Chen struggled fiercely, his movements inadvertently brushed against Pei Guanjing's injury. Immediately after, he heard a muffled groan near his ear, and Pei Guanjing instinctively loosened his grip.
At that moment, the soft light of dawn spilled gently over Pei Guanjing's black clothing, highlighting a conspicuous patch of wetness.
Seeing this, Ye Chen's heart tightened. He instinctively reached out to wipe the damp spot and, upon realizing that his fingers were stained with blood, he anxiously asked, "Why aren't you saying anything? After walking for so long and getting hurt, you didn't think to mention it?" His voice unconsciously rose in pitch.
Pei Guanjing's pale lips finally moved slightly, his breath weak but tinged with a hint of barely concealed joy. "A Chen, you've finally acknowledged me."
Well, who would have thought he was such a lovesick fool.
Ye Chen rolled his eyes in frustration. Just as he was anxiously trying to tear open Pei Guanjing's shirt to examine the wound, a slow voice suddenly came from behind them.
"You two are in such a hurry; why not come to king Ren’s Manor to say hello before you leave?"
The newcomer’s voice was icy and laced with mockery, instantly shattering the tense and delicate atmosphere.
Ye Chen and Pei Guanjing both froze simultaneously and slowly turned their heads, their gazes warily directed toward the source of the voice.
