As for how He Mu Ming would privately seek out Muer, that was beyond Ye Chen's knowledge and concern; such matters were no longer his responsibility.
However, after this incident, Ye Chen discovered a pleasant surprise. His relationship with Pei Guanjing seemed to have grown a bit closer.
In the past, Pei Guanjing had not allowed Ye Chen to cook any of his less favored dishes in the tent, but now, not only did Master no longer stop him, he even joined him in tasting spicy food.
Pei Guanjing did not eat spicy food; Ye Chen had noticed this when he delivered meals to him at the Medical Camp during his time working at the canteen.
Time flowed like a gentle stream, quietly passing day by day, and soon summer was approaching. The weather gradually grew warmer, and everyone began shedding their heavy winter clothing. As the temperature rose, Ye Chen noticed that the scent of Xin Xiang on him was becoming increasingly intense.
At first, he had not realized it himself until one day, while applying medicine to a soldier at the Medical Camp, a Zhong Yong soldier curiously leaned in close and sniffed him vigorously. "Hey, Ye Chen, why do you smell like Haitang? Did you sneak out and eat something special?"
Startled by the comment, Ye Chen awkwardly smiled and stammered a few responses before quickly turning to enter the Medicine Hall, hastily placing several medicine pouches on himself to mask the scent.
After Muer left, Pei Guanjing stopped making Hidden Fragrance Pills, and now only one remained on Ye Chen.
Fortunately, this last pill was given to him by Xiao Feng and could last for another month, giving him time to figure something out.
That evening, Ye Chen was busy in the small kitchen of the canteen, planning to make himself a late-night snack.
With a sudden "swish," the door curtain was flung open.
Hearing the noise, Ye Chen looked up hopefully from the stove, but when he saw who it was, his smile instantly vanished, replaced by a cold expression.
The visitor was Lou Yu.
Just as Lou Yu had said before, he did not come to Ye Chen's place for meals every day; he only dropped by when he had free time.
Tonight, Lou Yu was dressed in dark green regular attire, his hair half-wet with droplets sliding down his cheeks—clearly just having bathed.
Since the incident with Muer last time, whenever Ye Chen encountered Lou Yu, he would deliberately turn his head away and pretend not to see him, ignoring him completely.
Lou Yu stepped into the kitchen and immediately noticed Ye Chen standing to the side. However, he didn’t initiate a conversation and instead walked straight to the stove, lifting the pot lid.
Upon seeing only a pot of plain rice inside, Lou Yu’s enthusiasm quickly faded. With a clatter, he dropped the lid back down and began rummaging around the kitchen, hoping to find something else to eat.
After searching for a while, he only found a boiled egg. His face fell instantly, filled with dissatisfaction as he tossed the egg into the large pot and shouted, “Why is there only one egg? Didn’t you make anything else?”
Ye Chen was kneading dough when Lou Yu’s shouting irritated him. He retorted sharply, “If you don’t want to eat, then just get lost.”
Lou Yu didn’t dare truly anger Ye Chen. Ever since that incident last time, he felt uneasy; after all, he had wronged Ye Chen but couldn’t bring himself to apologize.
At eighteen or nineteen years old, a young man is often proud and sensitive about his pride.
Ye Chen ignored him and continued kneading the dough.
Seeing that Ye Chen wouldn’t respond, Lou Yu straightened up, pressed his hands heavily on the table, and continued to complain loudly, “Ye Chen, you’re torturing me! Do you know that? I’m at the age where I’m growing, yet you only give me this to eat.”
Ye Chen nearly choked on his own saliva.
When he first met Lou Yu, Lou Yu was already eighteen; now six months had passed, and he was nineteen. How could he still shamelessly claim he was growing?
Ye Chen was the one who was truly at that age—fourteen years old—when growth spurts were common. He was struggling himself, yet this person in front of him expected everyone to cater to him as if the world revolved around him.
With that thought in mind, Ye Chen slammed the dough onto the table and looked up, fixing his gaze directly on Lou Yu. Gritting his teeth, he asked, “So what does General Xiao Lou want to eat?”
The anger in Ye Chen’s eyes blazed fiercely as it shot towards Lou Yu. In an instant, Lou Yu’s arrogant demeanor was suppressed, leaving only flickers of defiance.
“Speak up! What do you want to eat?”
Seeing Lou Yu remain silent made Ye Chen’s frustration flare even higher as he raised his voice once more.
Lou Yu looked at the furious Ye Chen and dared not speak loudly, mumbling softly, "Meat."
After uttering that one word, he suddenly felt that as a nineteen-year-old Tian Qian, how could he be intimidated by the slender fourteen-year-old Zhong Yong in front of him? So, he mustered his courage and raised his voice a few decibels, boldly declaring, "Meat! I want to eat meat!"
His shout was loud enough to infuriate Ye Chen, who felt like slapping him across the face.
How shameless!
Ye Chen gritted his teeth in anger and said, "So you want to eat meat, huh? That's easy. Do you see that big steamer in the corner? Go put it on the stove, then climb into the steamer yourself, cover it with the lid, and then you'll have meat to eat."
Lou Yu was momentarily stunned, his mind a complete muddle as he couldn't understand how he could possibly eat meat this way. He looked at Ye Chen with a bewildered expression, resembling a deer lost in a maze.
Seeing Lou Yu's foolish look made Ye Chen laugh despite his anger. The frustration that had been pent up inside him over the past few days dissipated a bit with that laugh.
But Lou Yu continued to stare blankly at Ye Chen. Compared to his usual decisive and imposing demeanor in front of soldiers, this version of him seemed like a completely different person—miles apart.
Ye Chen couldn't help but chuckle again. Sometimes misunderstandings between young people can clear up just that quickly.
Then Ye Chen resigned himself, stood up with a sigh, and said helplessly, "Alright, General Xiao Lou, if you don't mind, let's just eat noodles together."
Upon hearing Ye Chen's invitation, Lou Yu's eyes lit up with joy as he eagerly followed behind Ye Chen, nodding vigorously, "Okay!"
