Lou Yu tilted his head back and drained the tea from his cup, setting it down with a smirk as he looked at Pei Guanjing. “Pei Guanjing, after all these years, this is the first time I’ve seen you protect someone.”
Pei Guanjing remained silent, his eyes cast down as he leisurely sipped his tea.
That was just how he was; when it came to people he didn’t want to engage with or questions he didn’t wish to answer, saying even a single word felt like a waste.
Ye Chen perked up his ears.
In just six months, the situation had flipped completely. The very scenario where Lou Yu had once pulled him away from Pei Guanjing had transformed into this. Life was indeed unpredictable, and karma had a way of circling back.
Not hearing a response from Pei Guanjing, Lou Yu continued speaking to himself.
“Doctor Pei,” Lou Yu’s voice regained its usual tone, carrying an air of authority without anger. “Since Ye Chen is under your protection, I won’t say much more. However, he is undeniably involved in this matter. If you refuse to hand him over, I’ll have no choice but to report to General He and let him come personally to demand the boy!”
Ye Chen lowered his head, curling his lips in disdain in the corner where no one could see him.
What a scumbag! He had a wife in the capital yet was keeping a sixteen-year-old boy for himself. Now that he’d gotten the boy pregnant, he wouldn’t even let him go, locking him in his tent. Feeding him piles of pregnancy medicine every day as if he were some kind of livestock!
General He didn’t even consider that the boy had a home he couldn’t return to. Now that he had regained his memories and could leave, why would he want to stay here? Besides, which sane victim would fall for a trafficker and a criminal?
Initially, Ye Chen felt resentment towards Muer for knocking him out and making him take the blame. But after a night of reflection, he realized Muer was merely a brave soul who had escaped from the “mountain.” What right did he have to judge? After all, wasn’t he also trapped here now?
As these thoughts crossed his mind, Ye Chen’s eyes suddenly dimmed but quickly flickered with a glimmer of hope.
However, now he felt confident in his master’s protection. He believed that not only Lou Yu but even if General He himself came demanding him, there was no need for concern.
The feeling of being shielded by someone was simply wonderful; Ye Chen instantly felt that his future was bright.
Pei Guanjing held his teacup steady as a mountain, his expression betraying no hint of change.
Seeing this, Lou Yu's mood began to lift again. "Alright, Pei Guanjing, you really know how to keep your composure. After all, you are the adopted son of Regent Pei Yongshang. He has no biological sons, and he raised you himself. How could General He offend you over a favored concubine?"
Lou Yu's tone was sarcastic, but Pei Guanjing remained unfazed, seemingly ignoring his words entirely.
This only made Lou Yu more frustrated, and he stood up with a forced smile. "Pei Guanjing, are you determined to protect him to the end?"
Ye Chen kept his head down, while Pei Guanjing appeared to be listening to Lou Yu but did not respond at all.
Seeing that both Pei Guanjing and Ye Chen were treating him as if he were invisible, Lou Yu grew increasingly exasperated. He stepped forward and stood in front of the seated Pei Guanjing, glaring at Ye Chen who was cowering behind him. Once again, he asked, "This is the last time—Ye Chen, come with me now. As long as you take me to Muer, I promise you won't have to worry about your life."
Ye Chen kept his head bowed.
There was no worry for his life, but if he lost half of it instead, would that count? Besides, he wasn't Muer's accomplice; he was a victim too! Lou Yu had no trust at all and came at him with such accusations.
It was not entirely surprising that Lou Yu thought this way. After all, in a military camp, how could a Kun Ze escape the layers of security without help? Moreover, there were lookout towers in every direction; everything was under close watch. It was only because of the deep darkness last night that they failed to recognize Muer and allowed him to escape.
Ye Chen still kept his head down and said nothing.
"Please leave."
As the tea cup was emptied, Pei Guanjing stood up and gestured for Lou Yu to leave. His tall figure stood like a pine tree in front of Ye Chen, blocking Lou Yu's intense gaze directed at him.
Noticing Pei Guanjing's firm stance against letting him take Ye Chen away today, Lou Yu glanced back at Ye Chen and then faced Pei Guanjing again. Gritting his teeth, he said slowly and deliberately, "Pei Guanjing, one day you will bring harm to him."
"My people are my responsibility; I will protect him well. There's no need for General Xiao Lou to worry about that. Please leave if there's nothing else."
Pei Guanjing's expression was cold as he urged Lou Yu to depart once more. His gaze never once met Lou Yu's; instead, it remained fixed on the flaps of the tent as if signaling that Lou Yu's presence had already overstayed its welcome.
"Good, very good." Lou Yu repeated the word "good" twice, his tone filled with frustration and unwillingness. After saying this, he suddenly turned around and strode away, his sleeves swaying as a cold wind followed him, as if he wanted to vent all his anger into the breeze.
Hearing Lou Yu's departing footsteps, Ye Chen couldn't help but smile slightly, a hint of pride appearing on his lips.
But soon, he worried about being seen by Pei Guanjing and hurriedly lowered his head.
However, it was too late; Pei Guanjing had already keenly noticed this subtle change.
Just as Ye Chen's head lowered, Pei Guanjing's cold voice rang in his ear: "Ye Chen, do you have nothing to explain?"
"Huh?" Ye Chen quickly raised his head, his pure black eyes blinking like a fawn's, revealing innocence and confusion. "Master, what is there to explain? It's just as I said earlier. Don't you believe me, Master?"
As he spoke, he tilted his head slightly, gazing directly at Pei Guanjing.
Seemingly surprised by Ye Chen's reaction, Pei Guanjing raised an eyebrow lightly, a hint of subtle inquiry flashing in his eyes.
He walked slowly around Ye Chen, scrutinizing him from head to toe. After a moment, he calmly said, "You seem to have grown taller."
Ye Chen instantly beamed with joy; the tension on his face vanished in an instant, replaced by sheer delight.
Pei Guanjing had finally noticed!
