Xiaoshuang noticed Secretary Chen's hesitation and pressed, "What about the letter? Can we see it?"
Secretary Chen shook his head, cleared his throat, and said, "It's just some superstitious nonsense. Long Boss read it and tossed it aside. Besides, I... I haven't seen the letter myself; I've only heard the boss mention it."
The group asked Secretary Chen a few more questions about Long Tianming's whereabouts, to which he replied that Long Boss was on an inspection in the Southern Mountain Area and would be back soon.
Seeing that he truly knew little or was unwilling to say more, the three had no choice but to take their leave. Zheng Jianfei escorted Lin Mingchang and Ruan Xiaoshuang back to the inn.
Shen Tong and the others had already returned. Peng Zai was sitting on a stone bench at the entrance of the inn, fiddling with a string of walnuts, tossing them up and catching them. Upon seeing Zheng Jianfei, he immediately stood up.
Zheng Jianfei turned to Lin Mingchang and coldly said, "I have something to do tomorrow, so I can't take you with me for the investigation. You can arrange things on your own."
Lin Mingchang was about to ask a few questions about Qingfeng Village when Zheng Jianfei had already turned and disappeared into the winding alley with Peng Zai.
The two entered the inn, where Shen Tong was standing by a water tank, scooping water to wash his hands. Hearing their footsteps, he looked up and said, "You’re back. Did you find anything?"
Lin Mingchang nodded. "We have some clues. What about you?"
Shen Tong dried his hands with a coarse cloth. "We have some findings too. Let's eat first; we can talk after dinner."
After the four finished their meal, most of the other guests at the inn had returned to their rooms to rest, leaving only the owner behind the counter, focused on counting money.
They gathered in a small corner hall on the first floor to drink tea and exchange information from their investigations.
Fang Zigui poured himself a cup of tea and quietly said, "Today we saw the bodies of the last two victims. They exhibited typical signs of having been affected by extremely toxic substances. Coupled with Shen Tong's observation of the blue-purple 'Toxic Miasma,' I believe all three victims died from the same cause."
"What cause?" Lin Mingchang asked as he took a sip from his cup.
"Gu Poison."
"Gu Poison?" Ruan Xiaoshuang's eyes widened. "Isn't that the legendary Miao witchcraft... using poisonous insects to cultivate... poison?"
Fang Zigui nodded. "That's roughly correct, but it's much more complicated than you think. True Gu Poison is not just a simple toxin; it's a type of poison cultivated through special methods that possesses a certain spirit. As far as I know, there are many ways to create Gu Poison, but the most common method involves putting various poisonous insects together to let them devour each other until only one survives—that one becomes the Gu."
"This sounds too... mystical," Lin Mingchang hesitated. "Is there really any scientific basis for this?"
"Perhaps there isn't any so-called scientific basis..." Fang Zigui clasped his hands under his chin in thought. "But that doesn't affect the actual potency of Gu Poison. The most terrifying aspect of Gu Poison is that it can lie dormant in the human body for a long time and can specifically target certain organs."
Lin Mingchang took some time to digest this information before telling Shen Tong and Fang Zigui that he and Ruan Xiaoshuang had visited Tianming Industries today but unfortunately did not meet Long Tianming himself.
"Long Tianming wants to breed Golden Money Bees on a large scale in the Southern Mountain Area, claiming it's for developing medicinal value to help local Miao People escape poverty. However, some Miao Villages—especially one called Qingfeng Village—strongly oppose this plan, believing it will disrupt some 'human-bee balance' and bring disaster."
