Around eleven o'clock at night, the power was restored. According to Gao Jun, the notice about the power outage was posted on the bulletin board on the east side of the building, but I had never paid much attention to such things.
As my nerves relaxed, waves of fatigue washed over me. Gao Jun, who had slept all morning, was now full of energy and kept urging me to sleep first. The earlier scare left me feeling anxious, and even with the lights on, I clung to Gao Jun, not wanting him to leave my side. Unable to do anything else, he sat on the edge of my bed, half-embracing me until I drifted off to sleep.
However, sleep itself plunged me into a vast world of darkness where I had to face all my fears alone.
A chilling sensation enveloped me, making it hard to breathe.
"I want to go out! Dad, let me out! I want to go out! Dad, let me out!" The piercing cries pulled me back to that dark night twenty years ago.
I felt a cold, slippery touch on my hand and remembered that I was not alone in the wardrobe; there was also a girl in white clothing with me.
I turned my head to see her holding a brush, continuously writing something on the wardrobe wall, her eyes fixed intently on me.
What could have caused such sorrow in her gaze?
A faint light seeped through the crack in the wardrobe. I pressed my eyes against the gap and looked outside.
Two unfamiliar men were in the room. My father lay unconscious on the floor while my mother was being threatened with a knife by one man. The other man held a knife as well and was rummaging through our belongings.
I trembled all over as this terrifying scene replayed before my eyes.
The man searched around before coming to the wardrobe. He first tugged at the cabinet door; it was locked and wouldn’t budge. Cursing under his breath, he bent down and peered through the crack, pulling harder until the entire wardrobe shook.
His face was almost pressed against my eyes, a long scar running from his left eyebrow down to the bridge of his nose. I had never seen such an ugly and fierce face in my life, and overwhelming fear finally made me cry out loud.
Scarface was startled by the sudden cry and took a step back. The man guarding my mother also looked over in surprise. At that moment, my mother suddenly snatched the short knife from his hand and stabbed it fiercely into his abdomen.
Wounded Man let out a muffled groan, swaying as he grabbed hold of my mother. Scarface cursed viciously and lunged forward, aiming the knife at my mother's heart.
She fell down, her eyes fixed on the direction of the wardrobe, filled with sorrow and concern.
Scarface supported Wounded Man and tried to escape towards the door, but the man was slumped over and could no longer walk. Scarface hesitated for a moment, then stabbed him again in the chest before abandoning his body and disappearing into the night.
I stared in shock at this scene, pounding on the wardrobe door, crying out in desperation, "I want to go out! Dad, let me out! I want to go out! Dad, please let me out!"
But Dad just lay quietly on the ground; he could no longer hear my voice.
...
"Xiao Yun, wake up..."
I opened my eyes to see Gao Jun's concerned face in front of me. "What happened? Did you have another nightmare?"
I wiped my cheeks, still wet with tears from the dream.
"I dreamed about Mom and Dad."
“Are you thinking about that again?” Gao Jun looked into my eyes, suddenly serious as he said, “Xiaoyun, I love you. I will take care of you for the rest of my life.”
Tears welled up in my eyes once more. I was not alone; there was still someone in this world who cared for me. He promised to stay by my side forever.
“What time is it? Are you still awake?” I noticed that Gao Jun's eyes were bloodshot, and he looked extremely tired.
“It’s almost four in the morning. I’ve been painting in the living room,” he replied. “I’ve been inspired by the works of the masters I’ve seen these past few days.”
“Hmm, are you painting me? I want to see.”
Gao Jun smiled, “I haven’t finished yet. Why are you in such a hurry? Just go to sleep peacefully for now.”
I nodded, “Please don’t leave me just yet.”
“Don’t worry,” Gao Jun said, gently stroking my hair. “Close your eyes and go to sleep.”
