In the darkness, I couldn't discern why the wall gave me such a feeling. It seemed as if I could sense the girl right beside me, her cold gaze fixed on me, just like in the dream from last night. We were trapped in the same darkness! My scalp and back tightened, and my heart raced wildly!
At that moment, my right hand brushed against a hard protrusion. Thank goodness, I found the Electric Light switch! I almost trembled as I pressed the central round button.
The light flickered a few times before finally dispelling the darkness.
The room was empty, devoid of anything; those terrifying illusions vanished along with the shadows.
The chilling sensation on my left hand persisted. I steadied myself and examined the wall I had just touched. There was a damp watermark on it, not very noticeable, but easily felt when touched.
These watermarks must have been left when I wiped the walls before dinner. In other places, the stains had long dried, but only near the bedroom door did a patch remain damp.
I stared at this watermark, feeling an eerie atmosphere enveloping the room. Where was Gao Jun? I couldn't afford to be angry with him anymore and took out my phone to dial.
"Sorry, the user you are trying to reach is unavailable. Please try again later!" A soft female voice echoed from the receiver.
A wave of sour loneliness and grievance surged up my throat, and tears nearly fell. Frustrated, I simply turned off my phone and lay on the bed in a daze.
The fatigue from the day combined with the earlier fright quickly overwhelmed me, but I dared not close my eyes. I didn't know how long I managed to hold on like this until finally, I could no longer endure it; my eyelids began to droop, and my consciousness started to fade.
In a daze, suddenly everything went black—the lights went out!
My sleepiness vanished without a trace, and a cold sweat broke out on my back.
Gathering my courage, I once again felt my way to the wall. Fortunately, this time I was familiar with the surroundings and quickly found the switch. I pressed it several times, but the Electric Light showed no response. It seemed there was either a power outage or the bulb was broken; in any case, I couldn't expect the light to come on anytime soon.
A sense of helplessness enveloped me. How long would I have to stay in this darkness?
In desperation, I tried to bolster my own courage: Don’t be afraid! Don’t be afraid! Just don’t think about the past, don’t think about that dream, and nothing will happen!
One must learn to face the darkness alone.
With that thought in mind, I returned to bed and lay down again, pulling the blanket over myself. It felt as if the less of my body exposed to the air, the safer I would be.
My nerves were on high alert as time dragged on, each minute feeling like an hour. Although I was startled several times by minor sounds in the room, thankfully nothing unusual occurred.
As the night deepened, my initial frustration with Gao Jun gradually turned into concern. What if something had happened? Just as I was lost in thought, a few soft knocks echoed at the door.
The sound was faint but particularly clear in the stillness of the night.
“Gao Jun!” I whispered, all my anger and blame dissipating in an instant. I sprang from the bed and rushed to the living room door. In my excitement, I didn’t even check who was outside through the peephole; without a second thought, I opened the door. But…
No matter who stood at the door, nothing could have prepared me for what I saw!
The dimly lit hallway was completely empty—there was no one there!
