In the Red Fire Inner City, the tens of thousands of soldiers brought by Long Jiu had dwindled to just over ten thousand. Compared to the several thousand Yinzhou Soldiers outside the city, they were significantly outnumbered. The most critical issue was that the Shu Cang Soldiers inside the city had reached a desperate situation, while the Yinzhou army was cooking meals outside, the aroma wafting into the inner city. If it weren't for the commanding officers maintaining order, those soldiers without any ties would have long since laid down their weapons and surrendered.
On another high tower in Chi Huo City, Scar and others watched the scene before them with mixed feelings. They knew Long Jiu well enough; both Scar and Gong Shangnan were ruthless individuals, but compared to Long Jiu, who was now besieged, Scar felt he was almost merciful. His ruthlessness was directed only at enemies, while Long Jiu was harsh even on his own men. With ambitions that had led him to bring tens of thousands only to find himself in need of rescue now, it was a stark contrast.
Scar had originally been a desperate outlaw in the underworld. Later, lured by Gong Shangnan, he joined this mysterious organization, primarily for money. Compared to his previous days of barely scraping by, life now was incredibly comfortable. With Gong Shangnan's influence, he and those behind him no longer had to hide everywhere. Although he was an outlaw, he had his principles; he was deeply dissatisfied with the organization's treatment of the weak and vulnerable, which fueled his growing resentment towards Gong Shangnan for drawing him into this mess.
"Commander, when do we strike?" one member asked from behind.
"Not yet; we'll wait until chaos ensues," Scar replied.
Outside Chi Huo City, the Yinzhou Army had gathered at three of the city gates, surrounding it on three sides. This was a common military strategy, but Yin Qian did not intend to let them escape through the fourth gate. He arranged ambushes outside so that once the troops inside began to collapse, they would be trapped beyond recovery.
"People inside the city, listen! Our general is in a good mood today and has decided to treat you kindly. If you lay down your weapons and come out of the city, our general will not only spare you from punishment but will treat you with respect..." The Yinzhou Soldiers outside began calling out to persuade them to surrender.
"The enemy's morale is already broken; they are only held back by their commanders and do not dare to rebel or surrender easily," one officer reported.
"Once we breach the city walls, target their commanders first. We will attack in half an hour," Yin Qian ordered after hearing the report.
"Understood!" The officers responded as they prepared for battle. The reason for calling out to persuade surrender before attacking was to minimize losses; this was their territory after all. Not only would there be casualties during battle, but there would also be reconstruction costs afterward—expenses that would come out of their own pockets. It was best to save wherever possible and reduce soldier casualties as much as possible.
Inside Chi Huo City's inner city under the moonlight, everyone knew that the Yinzhou army would attack tonight. Upon hearing this news, some soldiers even felt a sense of relief, while those in command were anxious because Yin Qian's call for surrender did not mention any leniency towards them. At this moment, Long Jiu sat alone in a room, refusing to see anyone because those who came to rescue him were already outside the city and waiting for the right moment to come and extract him from his predicament. As for those outside in his eyes, they were like ants—he had never cared for them before and now that he was in trouble himself, he certainly wouldn’t concern himself with their fates.
Outside Chi Huo City, Cheng Shi waited with a few others. They had already noticed Scar and his group arriving and chose to wait outside to deal with them individually. Surely Long Jiu would be among them when the time came.
