It hadn't been long since we had some peace, and yet Jiajia's grandmother and father were back on various platforms, live-streaming their sob stories.
I clicked into the live stream, and the background wall was adorned with Jiajia's photos, surrounded by clutter. The lighting was dim, resembling a haunted house, clearly a makeshift setup meant to deceive.
As soon as they settled down, Grandma Li showcased her acting skills, crying and sniffling while wailing, “Everyone look! Ever since that Lin Xiao started spreading lies, we've been subjected to online bullying every day. We can't even step outside our door! Why is our life so miserable?”
Meanwhile, her father pretended to sigh dramatically beside her, muttering, “She just wants to swindle our house; that's why she's concocted these lies. Don’t believe her!”
The live stream's popularity skyrocketed as if it were on a rocket, with a flood of confused new viewers pouring into the comments section.
The screen was filled with accusations against me: “This woman is so wicked! How can she slander others like this?”
“Desperate for a house, she’ll do anything. Truly despicable,” the comments scrolled on endlessly.
Just when I was feeling anxious, an unexpected turn of events occurred with Jiajia's Mother.
Seizing the opportunity while the grandmother and father were out live-streaming, Jiajia's Mother came to my house.
As soon as she entered, I noticed her haggard appearance; her hands were nervously wringing together as if she wanted to say something but hesitated.
I watched her warily; after all, her family had caused me too much harm in the past.
With her head lowered, it seemed she had mustered great courage before finally speaking up: “After I gave birth to Jiajia, my mother-in-law has been pressuring me to have a second child, all because of her preference for boys over girls.”
I refused, and she responded with cold sarcasm.
That day, it was just her and the child at home. Suddenly, the child went missing. She insisted that the child had mischievously run out and been abducted, and she wouldn't even allow me to call the police...
As she spoke, tears streamed down her face like pearls slipping off a broken string. Choking back sobs, she added, "I’m sorry for the child, and I know you’ve been wronged."
Her words provided crucial clues for me and Su Yao.
Just as we were processing this information, my phone suddenly chimed with a notification.
I picked it up to see the screen light up with a message: "I know you’re looking for the truth; I have clues." The sender was a mysterious user named "Dark Night Hunter."
I widened my eyes in surprise and turned to meet Su Yao's gaze, both of us filled with confusion and hope.
Sitting on the sofa, I fixed my eyes on the phone screen as it chimed again. "Dark Night Hunter" had sent a video file along with a note: "Take a look at this, but keep it quiet."
We leaned in together to watch.
In the video, an elderly woman was stealthily dragging a large bag through the night, her footsteps hurried.
Su Yao furrowed her brow, deep in thought. "Lin Xiao, look at the direction this grandmother is coming from. Considering the terrain around the neighborhood, I think the body disposal site is likely nearby in the river."
With that, she rushed to the table, spread out a map, and began marking areas with a pen.
I leaned in closer to examine the marked region on the map. My heart sank; although the river wasn’t large, its current was swift. If something were truly in there... I dared not think further.
Su Yao seemed to see through my thoughts as she held my hand firmly and said, "Lin Xiao, don't be afraid. Now that we have a lead, we will definitely uncover the truth."
I took a deep breath, gritted my teeth, and replied, "Alright, I trust you. We can't let them get away with this. I'm going to post the lead online so everyone can see the true face of this family."
I edited the text and added a screenshot from the video before hitting send.
As soon as the message was sent, my phone went wild with notifications, "dinging" incessantly as netizens erupted in response.
In the comments section, there were those condemning Jiajia's family:
"This grandmother is so cruel; how could she harm her own granddaughter?"
"This family is despicable; they must be severely punished."
There were also supporters urging us to continue the investigation: "We must uncover the truth and seek justice for the victims."
Some even organized spontaneously to go to the riverbank to help look for evidence.
Before long, the neighborhood became lively as many concerned netizens arrived. They held up their phones and flashlights, forming small teams to search along the riverbank.
Su Yao and I joined in as well. The night grew deeper, and the river shimmered with a cold light under the glow of our lights.
