The winter sun streamed through the dormitory window as Nezha lay on his bed, his fingers absentmindedly tracing the contours of the Silver Ring. It had been over a month since Ao Bing's doppelgänger had vanished that night, and he often found himself staring at the ring as if it were the only connection he had to Ao Bing.
"It's almost New Year's, and I wonder how Ao Bing is doing in the Dragon Palace..." Nezha sighed and turned to sit up.
Outside, the lively sounds of chatter filled the air as classmates busily decorated the campus, stringing lights and hanging ornaments. The annual New Year's Eve Party was one of the school's most important events, especially since this year, the administration had even secured a permit for a fireworks display, rumored to be unprecedented in scale.
A knock on the door interrupted Nezha's thoughts.
"Oh dear, little Nezha, why are you lying around during the day?" Aunt Taiyi entered with a smile, carrying a plate of freshly baked pastries. "Try some of my new Red Bean Pastry; they taste great!"
Nezha forced himself to perk up and took a piece, biting into it. "Aunt Taiyi, do you have any news from the Dragon Palace? Is Ao Bing... is he alright?"
Aunt Taiyi set down the plate and gave him a meaningful look. "The waters of the Dragon Palace are deep; news is hard to come by. However, I did hear that the East Sea has been quite calm lately; perhaps Little Prince is doing well."
"He must be very busy..." Nezha lowered his gaze, his voice tinged with disappointment.
"Young man," Aunt Taiyi said as she sat beside him and patted his shoulder, "have a little confidence in yourself! You both performed wonderfully that night; your first trial is just around the corner. You need to lift your spirits!"
Nezha looked up, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "Taiyi Senior, are you saying... Ao Bing can really come back?"
"Fate is something destined by heaven, but one must also put in effort," Aunt Taiyi said mysteriously, winking at him. "Participate well in the New Year's Eve Party; you might just find a surprise!"
With that, Aunt Taiyi got up and left, leaving Nezha with a puzzled expression.
"Surprise? What surprise?" Nezha muttered to himself before shaking his head. "Forget it; I won't get my hopes up."
Despite his reservations, Nezha decided to attend the New Year's Eve Party. After all, sulking alone in his dorm wouldn't help, and who knows—Aunt Taiyi might actually know something.
On the day of the New Year's Eve Party, the entire campus was buzzing with excitement. The Campus Central Square had been transformed with a massive stage adorned with colorful lights and decorations. Food stalls, game areas, and a wishing pool were all set up. Many couples had already claimed prime spots for watching the fireworks, filling the air with a sweet atmosphere.
Nezha wandered through the bustling crowd alone, watching couples together only deepening his sense of loneliness. He wore the Silver Ring on his finger; it glimmered faintly under the lights as if reminding him of that distant promise.
"Li Nezha!" A familiar voice called from behind him as several teammates from the Magic City University Soccer Team approached. One of them clapped him on the shoulder. "You’ve been so quiet lately! It’s a rare New Year's Eve Party—can you at least try not to look so glum?"
"Yeah," another teammate handed him a drink. "I heard the midnight fireworks are going to be spectacular! Let’s find a good spot to watch."
Nezha forced a smile. "Thanks, but I have something to do later; you guys go ahead."
The teammates exchanged glances before one leaned closer and whispered conspiratorially, "You’re not waiting for that blue-haired genius, are you? It seems like we haven’t seen him in ages."
"Stop guessing," Nezha replied irritably. "He has a name—it's Ao Bing."
"Oh ho! Someone's protective!" his teammates teased. "Alright then, good luck with that, bro."
