In the following days, Nezha threw himself into intense training. Every morning, he would wake up early to run on the field and practice various soccer skills. After class, he would gather with like-minded classmates for small matches, constantly honing his techniques and teamwork abilities.
Ao Bing, despite his busy schedule, found time to bring him water and towels after training. Occasionally, he would join in the practice; although his soccer skills couldn't match Nezha's, his basic movements were still quite solid.
"You’re training too hard," Ao Bing said one evening, looking at the sweaty Nezha with concern. "Don’t wear yourself out."
Nezha wiped his sweat and smiled. "It’s fine; I have plenty of stamina! Plus, I need to prove to everyone that I’m not the person they think I am."
Ao Bing fell silent for a moment before gently saying, "You don’t need to prove anything to anyone. As long as you know who you are, that’s enough."
Nezha paused and looked at Ao Bing. "But..."
"Of course," Ao Bing replied with a slight smile, "if you want to showcase your strength through the matches, I’ll support you wholeheartedly. Just don’t push yourself too hard for the sake of others' opinions."
Nezha felt a warmth in his heart from Ao Bing's concern. He nodded, "I understand; I’ll be careful."
The day before the match, the school’s Sports Department announced the final list of participants. Nezha rushed to check the list but was shocked to find that his name was not among them.
"What’s going on?" Nezha couldn’t believe his eyes. "I signed up and trained so well—why isn’t my name here?"
"Didn’t you know?" a classmate beside him said. "I heard that the Sports Department thinks your past record doesn’t meet the requirements for the School Team, so they removed you."
Nezha was stunned as a wave of intense frustration and unfairness washed over him. He had worked so hard, yet he was still constrained by past labels. The feeling of being denied made him both angry and disheartened.
"I can't accept this! I need to go find the Athletic Department and get some answers!" Nezha gritted his teeth and turned to run toward the Athletic Department office.
"Wait," Ao Bing grabbed his arm. "Calm down. Acting impulsively won't solve anything. We should first understand the situation before figuring out a way to address it."
Nezha took a deep breath and nodded. Ao Bing's calmness and rationality always guided him in critical moments.
The two arrived at the Athletic Department office and requested to see the Director of the Sports Department. While they waited, Nezha paced anxiously back and forth in the hallway, while Ao Bing sat quietly, contemplating their strategy.
Finally, Teacher Chen, the Director of the Sports Department, came out to meet them. He was a middle-aged man in his fifties with a stern expression, clearly someone who was not easy to talk to.
"Teacher Chen, I want to know why my name isn't on the roster for the Magic City University Soccer Team," Nezha asked directly.
Teacher Chen frowned. "Li Nezha, right? I remember you. Your skills are indeed impressive, but considering your past behavioral issues and poor record, the school team cannot take that risk."
"What risk?" Nezha asked, confused.
"What if you lose control during a match and get into a conflict with the opposing team?" Teacher Chen explained. "The school team represents the image of our institution. We need players who not only have skill but also good character."
Nezha clenched his fists, struggling to contain his anger. "Teacher Chen, that was all in the past. I'm not that impulsive 'Problem Student' anymore. I've been training seriously and following the rules. Do I really have to be forever labeled by my past mistakes?"
Teacher Chen's expression softened slightly, but he remained firm. "I'm sorry, but rules are rules. Students must adhere to the school's regulations to participate in competitions."
