“Hi, isn’t it strange? I don’t know why, but in the past year, the number of people entering this forest has suddenly increased. At first, it was manageable, but then more and more people came. They all relied on the resources from the mountains for supplies, and the Demon Beasts and other creatures have been hunted clean. As a result, our village, which depends on hunting in the mountains, has seen a significant decrease in our harvests. This time when we ventured into the mountains, we had little luck, so everyone decided to head towards the Yan Luo River to try our luck. Although there are more prey than before, our strength is limited, and we can’t hunt much. We even lost two brothers this time.” Before Erniu could speak, one of the team members explained the situation to Mo Wen.
“Brother Er Gou, while you’ve been wandering in this forest, haven’t you encountered any of those people?”
“I’ve come across a few groups but managed to avoid them. You all know that in this forest, the greatest fear isn’t encountering a Demon Beast or a Chimera; it’s running into other people.” It wouldn’t be believable if he said he hadn’t encountered anyone, and Mo Wen had no reason to lie. “Could it be that something has happened in this forest?”
“I know about that. I heard some people who were resting in our village before heading into the mountains talking about it. They said there was a huge change in the Cloud Mist Swamp that affected half the forest. Apparently, there have been sightings of a Divine Beast. Brother Er Gou, have you noticed anything unusual in this forest?”
“Could it be that the Earth Dragon turning over a few days ago was caused by that Divine Beast? Other than that, I haven’t noticed anything. As you all know, I only came here to gather herbs and have just been wandering around this area. This forest is vast, and I don’t have the ability to venture deep into it. Even if a Divine Beast really did appear, it wouldn’t concern me.” Mo Wen sighed first and then expressed his frustration about not having the strength to enter deeper into the forest. He alone knew what had happened when he left Cloud Mist Swamp; even if he claimed that the Divine Beast was right beside him, this group wouldn’t believe him.
With their fallen comrade gone, everyone briefly forgot their sorrow as they chatted together. For Mo Wen, this was the first time in half a year that he had engaged in such conversation with others. During these months, he had been alone, occasionally talking to himself while gazing at the sky or staring blankly at his jade pendant. They talked late into the night; Erniu arranged for someone to keep watch while the rest rested. For Mo Wen in the past, resting merely meant recuperating his energy while remaining vigilant against dangers lurking in the dark. But now with more people around, he could truly relax.
On their way back, the Hunting Party did not retrace their steps as Brother Er Gou requested. At first, everyone was puzzled about what was happening until they finally understood: Brother Er Gou was leading them to hunt prey that seemed impossible for them to catch—Demon Beasts that were far beyond their capabilities. Brother Er Gou struck with lethal precision while the rest of them became his support team. Moreover, Brother Er Gou was indeed gathering herbs as well; his method made them break out in cold sweat. Of course, if they encountered something manageable for the Hunting Party members to handle, he wouldn’t intervene. If anyone got injured, their “Brother Er Gou” would provide treatment, and gradually everyone became convinced that he was a healer.
They also discovered that this “Brother Er Gou” not only possessed impressive martial skills and medical knowledge but also cooked exceptionally well. Originally, Mo Wen had no intention of stepping in; however, he realized that these men’s cooking skills were even worse than Old Lu’s. Now he finally understood why Old Lu had such mysterious confidence in his culinary abilities back then.
