He put away the Lighting Pearl and moved toward the source of the light. As he got closer, he could see the scorching lava, but suddenly he stopped in his tracks upon noticing a vague figure.
"There’s someone in this cave!" Mo Wen thought in surprise. In this forest, he would rather encounter a Demon Beast or a Chimera than a person. This was what Old Lu had told him: when facing a Demon Beast or a Chimera, you knew it was your enemy, and you could only resolve things through battle; humans were different—you never knew if they were good or bad. When you thought someone was good, they might strike you down from behind.
Since entering the cave, he had been completely focused and hadn’t detected any living beings. After sensing again, Mo Wen finally relaxed; that figure wasn’t alive but appeared to be a dead human. Still cautious, he continued deeper into the cave.
Standing by the edge of the Lava Pool and looking at the figure across from him, he saw that it had turned into a corpse. Mo Wen slowly approached the corpse and stopped across from it at the edge of the Lava Pool. From there, he could clearly see its condition. The bones were still in a meditative posture, dressed in a black robe with its head bowed low, disheveled hair obscuring its face. A long knife lay flat on its knees with both hands resting on it, while between its knees lay a piece of Beast Skin that seemed to have writing on it.
Mo Wen observed his surroundings again; this cave was over five zhang high and about four zhang wide. It should have been filled with lava at one time, but now it had cooled and receded, leaving only a pool about two zhang in size. Aside from the entrance he had come through, there were no other exits in this Melted Cave. As for danger, there was nothing else besides that corpse. Gathering his courage, Mo Wen approached the corpse and bowed respectfully.
"Senior, I apologize for intruding." He then picked up the piece of Beast Skin and examined the writing on it—it was a last will. The Beast Skin read: "Years ago, our manor faced disaster; over twenty of us guarded the Young Master. Unexpectedly, we were ambushed by treacherous men along the way. We fought desperately to break through; all my brothers perished while the Young Master fell into misfortune and went missing. I was thrown into a ravine and narrowly escaped death but could not find the Young Master here; as I reached this place my injuries flared up again and I could go no further. Though my heart remains loyal to my master, my body cannot comply. Knowing my time is short, I bury myself here and leave my lifelong treasures for those fated to find them. I hope that one day you will grow stronger and slay Shen Gui Men to avenge our clan's thousands of souls!"
