Finally reaching the cave entrance, Mo Wen had nearly exhausted all his strength. He collapsed onto the ground and rested for a while, feeling slightly rejuvenated. Leaning against the stone wall, he stood up and slowly made his way into the cave. Blood continued to trickle from the corner of his mouth; at that moment, all he wanted was to sleep. However, he needed to inspect the cave first. In the darkness, he sensed that there were no traces of Demon Beasts or Chimeras, which eased his mind. With great difficulty, he set his backpack down beside him and leaned against the stone wall, drifting into a deep sleep.
Weak sunlight filtered into his eyes, and Mo Wen opened them to see his backpack still beside him. Xiao Hei was there too, which reassured him. He had no idea how long he had been unconscious. The sunlight streamed through the mist at the cave entrance, warming his face. He raised a hand to shield his eyes and felt as if his body had fallen apart; he could barely muster any energy. His head throbbed with pain, so he retrieved a healing pill from the storage pouch at his waist and swallowed it, closing his eyes to recuperate. Since leaving Qilin Cave, he had traveled by day and rested by night, trying to avoid powerful Demon Beasts and Chimeras. Yet encounters were unavoidable; ever since exiting Qilin Cave, each day had been a struggle. He could only recall how long he had been awake; as for how long he had been unconscious after getting injured, he had no idea. He guessed it might have been one night; given his recovery rate, it seemed plausible.
Leaning against the cave wall, he reflected on his recent experiences while healing his wounds. He had fought in countless battles during this time—hundreds of skirmishes that ended in victory for him. The encounters where he was chased across mountains didn’t count as battles in his mind; they were merely escapes that played out almost daily. As expected, he encountered Chimeras and Demon Beasts fleeing from their lairs due to the disturbances at Qilin Cave. These creatures were ferocious; his previous strategy of “avoid what you can’t handle” was rendered ineffective. Some Demon Beasts and Chimeras seemed intent on making him their target, relentlessly pursuing him. Eventually, he abandoned any thoughts of fleeing and began fighting back fiercely—slashing down from the mountains to the valleys, from land into water, and then emerging from the water again. Each battle only added more injuries; every time he managed to find a place to heal after escaping a chase, new Chimeras and Demon Beasts would appear, forcing him to fight or flee once more. Despite traveling by day and resting by night, he often found himself running for his life even under the cover of darkness.
On a brighter note, despite being in such dire straits, he had gained quite a bit. The Cloud Mist Swamp truly lived up to its reputation as the heart of Cloud Mist Forest; valuable resources were far more abundant here than outside the swamp. Even with his tendency to strip everything bare, he had to leave behind some items of lesser value that he recognized—like many of the Demon Beasts and Chimeras he defeated—only taking valuable Beast Cores, Chi Jings, Fur, Bone, Skeletons, and quality meat while discarding others on the spot. In the past, this would have been unthinkable for him. Nonetheless, his storage pouch and Storage Belt were nearly full now. More importantly than these gains was how much more adept he had become at controlling his speed.
