After falling from the Black Cloud Abyss, a series of bizarre events unfolded, leaving me feeling a chill run down my spine and my palms sweating.
The high-risk signal emitted by my junior brother came after he climbed the Ancient Guge Silver Eye. More specifically, it was after he fell from the arm of the Ancient Guge Silver Eye and climbed back up that he suddenly realized something, prompting him to react with a warning signal instead of directly informing us of the danger.
Although my junior brother often acted recklessly, he was quick-witted and would never joke about matters of life and death, especially when so many lives were at stake. This signal must have had deeper significance.
The saying "walls have ears"—whose ears are we referring to? Old Qiao? A Li? Or perhaps our senior sister, who was currently in grave danger trying to capture the Brown Spotted Civet?
Grave danger? Right! I suddenly recalled that my junior brother had slipped twice while climbing the Ancient Guge Silver Eye, which was indeed strange. I had also climbed it before; while its surface was smooth, it wasn't so slippery that one couldn't find footing. My junior brother's skills were on par with mine, and with Ze Zhang's assistance, it was hard to believe he could fall twice on the Ancient Guge Silver Eye, with the second fall nearly costing him his life—this was truly unbelievable.
Could it be that the problem lay with my junior brother? Was the real danger... actually him?!
I abruptly looked up to see my junior brother retreating instead of advancing; he had jumped down from the Ancient Guge Silver Eye and was rushing towards us in a panic. Instinctively, I shielded Old Qiao and A Li, stepping back as he moved forward.
My junior brother was so focused on his own concerns that he didn't notice my reaction. He shouted hoarsely at us, "Not good! There's something wrong with our senior sister! I saw... I saw her corpse sitting behind the Great Buddha in the Buddha Cave!"
My heart sank immediately. To be honest, I was relieved that I had seen through his scheme beforehand; otherwise, hearing such news would have made me believe it. I steadied myself and replied, "I think the one with the problem is you!"
A Li and Old Qiao were still unaware of what was happening behind me and asked in panic what was wrong.
I explained, "Just now this person signaled to me that there is danger here and urged us to retreat, but I see that he is the one most at risk!" Turning to my junior brother, I continued, "You slipped twice on the Ancient Guge Silver Eye; compared to me, your skills are far inferior! Besides, I've climbed that silver-eyed Buddha before—it’s not that slippery! So tell me, who exactly are you?"
My junior brother nervously glanced back at our senior sister still on the Great Buddha and waved his hand in a shushing motion. " Senior Brother, you’re being foolish! When you slide down from above, it’s not the same! The one with problems is that woman—she moves without effort and runs so fast that it defies all laws of physics! Oh Senior Brother, I really saw our senior sister's corpse in the Buddha Cave; that person up there is definitely not human!"
The younger disciple's gaze was incredibly sincere, and his expression was filled with urgency, clearly worried for our lives as well as his own. If this was all just an act, then I would have to admit defeat.
I felt a bit shaken and turned to look at Old Qiao A Li, only to find him equally bewildered, hesitating. Old Qiao pondered for a moment and muttered, "Could it be... the moment we suddenly disappeared up there just now?"
At that moment, the senior sister tied the semi-unconscious Brown Spotted Civet to the Nine Section Whip and pulled the whip downwards. In the blink of an eye, the person was at the bottom.
The younger disciple stared in shock. "What the hell, how did that happen so fast? This must be a fake!"
The senior sister tossed Brown Spotted Civet onto the ground. While tidying up the Nine Section Whip, she casually flicked her wrist, causing the whip to crack loudly as it swung over the younger disciple's head. Startled, he yelled and quickly crouched down, narrowly avoiding disaster.
Unfazed, the senior sister continued to tidy up the whip while carelessly swinging it towards the younger disciple. "Are you going to personally check on your own corpse?"
"What?!" The younger disciple was taken aback, momentarily losing his composure. He jumped up from the ground only to receive a whip from the senior sister, causing him to grit his teeth in pain and quickly jump aside.
The senior sister said, "Just now behind the Ancient Guge Silver Eye, I saw your corpse along with those of Gan and A Li. According to your logic, we’re all dead now—none of us are human?"
The younger disciple clicked his tongue, realizing that the senior sister had heard every word he had said earlier. He stubbornly retorted, "Don’t think that just because you heard me and can mimic my words you can get away with it! Old Qiao, you disappeared for a moment at the Ancient Guge Silver Eye; what were you doing then? Weren't you killing the real senior sister and taking her place?"
Old Qiao immediately distanced himself from any blame. "That... wasn't me; it was... something we all witnessed."
The senior sister shot Old Qiao a sidelong glance and crossed her arms habitually. "Hmph, fence-sitter! This is exactly what I wanted; believe it or not!"
Old Qiao quickly nodded submissively. "I believe! I believe!"
I actually believed my Senior Sister's words, or perhaps deep down I was unwilling to doubt her. Of course, my Junior Brother wasn't lying; he simply didn't have the full picture.
This situation felt very unsettling. I couldn't shake off the discomfort in my heart, so I asked, "Senior Sister, what exactly is going on? How could our... bodies be up there?" The latter part of my question caught in my throat, and I found it difficult to voice, but inside I was already feeling a chill. Had we really... died?
I had heard from my Master that many people, after they die, are unaware of their own death. They might continue living as usual with their family and friends, feeling neither hunger nor fatigue, until one day they accidentally come across their own decaying corpse and suddenly realize the truth of their demise.
It was very likely that we were in such a situation. In fact, when we fell from the Black Cloud Abyss, we might have already died; we just didn't know it... Yes, that must be it! We were all dead!
When I came back to my senses, my Senior Sister was saying to everyone, "...The Black Cloud Abyss has always been strange. It is connected to the earth; the earth is everything's mother, the boundary between yin and yang. In this place, all opposing things become indistinct; life is death, and death is life."
My Junior Brother shook his head. "What a bunch of nonsense; I still don't understand."
Although my Senior Sister's explanation was somewhat vague, it wasn't to the point of being "nonsense." My Junior Brother clearly still held doubts about her.
How could my Senior Sister not notice? Suppressing her irritation, before she could speak, Old Qiao leaned in from behind and said, "This is simple; let me draw you a diagram so you'll understand." (To be continued.)
