That old saying still holds true: I absolutely do not believe in things disappearing into thin air. My senior sister must have encountered some unexpected situation. Just when my junior brother's words caught our attention, how could a living person and a half-dead Frugivorous Civet just vanish right before our eyes?
"Senior sister? Senior sister?" I called out twice in a hurry. My junior brother shouted from above, "What do you mean 'senior sister'? Why is no one concerned about me? I almost fell to my death just now! Do you all have any conscience? Senior sister, senior sister, she was right here!" He tilted his head up and waved the flashlight.
To my surprise, my senior sister and the Frugivorous Civet had reappeared in the exact spot where I had just fallen from the Black Cloud Abyss, on the arm of the Ancient Guge Silver Eye that was bent in a prayer position.
How strange! Was I too nervous earlier and just seeing things? I confirmed, "Senior sister, are you okay?"
My senior sister shook the flashlight at me and pointed at the Frugivorous Civet lying on the ground ahead, signaling us to keep quiet. My junior brother executed a nimble move and flipped up; since climbing directly on the front of the Ancient Guge Silver Eye was difficult, he moved to the side to try to scale up via the arm that was behind its back.
Old Qiao and A Li shared my confusion, believing that our earlier chatter had distracted us. Feeling a bit guilty, they focused intently again, shining their flashlights below and closely monitoring every move of the two above in case they needed assistance.
My senior sister was now almost behind the Brown Spotted Civet, less than half a meter away, preparing to act. At that moment, my junior brother had also climbed onto the arm of the Ancient Guge Silver Eye that was bent at its lower back. He retracted his Lotus Head Silk and aimed it at the arm bent in front of him before throwing it out, then positioned himself on Wu Si, ready to climb up.
Such physical tasks were usually second nature to us; we didn’t need to think much about them—just use our arms and legs. In other words, it was as easy as eating or drinking. But for some reason, as I watched my junior brother climb this time, I felt an unusual tension and broke out in a cold sweat down my spine, sensing that something was about to happen.
My instincts have always been accurate, especially when it comes to bad feelings—they often come true. Just as this ominous thought crossed my mind, my junior brother slipped above. This time he completely lost his grip on the statue; I only heard him curse loudly before there was a dull thud as he fell out of sight behind the statue.
My heart dropped suddenly; I rushed over while Old Qiao and A Li followed closely behind, both calling out in alarm. Just then, my junior brother's voice came from behind the statue: "Damn! I should have checked the calendar before coming out! This statue must have been waxed; it's way too slippery!"
Hearing him still had energy to curse made me breathe a sigh of relief. I stopped in my tracks and saw him slowly climbing back up from behind the Ancient Guge Silver Eye's arm. His elbow seemed bruised but otherwise he appeared fine.
A Li exclaimed with exasperation, "What do you mean 'too slippery'? It's either your skills are lacking or your equipment is no good! Look at how senior sister managed to get up there! Or should I lend you my Nine-Tailed Whip?"
The junior brother said, "Hmph, what a joke! I, Dui Er, a man of honor, could never accept charity from a woman like you. However, A Li, if you truly want to come up and keep me company, I wouldn’t mind—" Just then, he paused abruptly and quickly waved his hand at us.
Old Qiao interjected, "What do you mean by 'up' and 'down'? Ugh, that sounds terrible!" He blushed and glanced at A Li before hastily looking away.
A Li looked at him in confusion. Although she didn’t understand what he meant, her eyes darted around and she realized it definitely wasn’t anything good. Her face flushed with anger as she placed her hands on her hips, ready to scold the junior brother. At that moment, I sensed something was off and quickly stopped her: "Shh—" I gestured for her to look at Old Qiao.
The junior brother continued, "You old rogue, I didn’t mean it like that… But if A Li is willing, I suppose I could reluctantly offer my body that I've guarded for twenty-three years to her!" As he spoke, he raised one hand behind him to gesture.
That was a secret signal we had established for when things were inconvenient to discuss openly; his meaning now was clear: danger, stay alert!
However, this gesture could only be understood by me and the junior brother; to others, it looked like random flailing. What kind of danger was he in? Why not just say it directly? He continued to tease A Li as if nothing was wrong. Suddenly, it hit me—I realized! Walls have ears! The junior brother was on guard against someone!
Upon hearing his words, A Li immediately understood why Old Qiao had blushed earlier; it was all filthy and vulgar talk. Anger surged within her as she completely forgot my warning and shouted at the junior brother, "Dui Er, if you have the guts, come down here! Let’s see if I don’t break your legs!" She started to charge forward.
Old Qiao hurriedly stopped her, clearly having forgotten my warning as well: "Oh A Li, don’t do that! Even though Dui Er tricked you and isn’t a virgin anymore, you two are quite the pair—if you were with him, I’d feel at ease!"
The junior brother immediately retorted, "You bastard! Selling out your own grandpa?!" This time his hand signal was: retreat quickly!
Listening to the heated argument around me made me feel a chill run down my spine; goosebumps erupted all over my body!
Standing beside me were Old Qiao and A Li, along with the senior sister above us. What kind of high-level danger signal was the junior brother trying to convey? Who exactly were we supposed to be on guard against? (To be continued.)
