My mind was a whirlwind, torn between preparing for a heroic sacrifice and hoping for a miracle. Ideally, a rope would suddenly descend from above, wrapping around my waist and rescuing me from the foul mouth of the Water-Lurking Beast just as I faced imminent danger.
“What are you waiting for? Come down and help!” A Li's voice suddenly called out from above.
I was startled back to reality, realizing that something was tightening around my waist. A quick glance revealed that indeed, a rope was wrapped around me, with a clever floral bell attached to the end—it was A Li's Nine-Tailed Whip. This wasn’t a dream after all.
Just then, I felt a chill at my right heel. Looking down, I cursed under my breath; one of the Water-Lurking Beasts had stretched its neck up and was trying to snatch my shoe. It had already knocked off my heel, leaving the shoe dangling from my toes. I quickly lifted my foot, causing it to miss.
This only seemed to enrage the others surrounding me. The Water-Lurking Beasts all mimicked the first one, stretching their bodies upward and using their massive tails to propel themselves higher. They reached out with dozens of hands, attempting to pull me down as if they were picking apples.
The fabric of my shirt was nearly shredded, and the flesh on my shoulders and backside felt raw from their claws. Damn it, I must be torn to shreds! A Li must have received help from Liuzi because I felt myself being pulled up a few inches, but I was still within reach of the Water-Lurking Beasts. My heart raced as I anxiously urged Liuzi to pull faster. Liuzi gritted his teeth and warned me that if I complained again, he would simply let go and drop me.
I thought A Li must be too exhausted to speak; otherwise, Liuzi wouldn’t be so bold. Still, I wisely kept my mouth shut—after all, my life depended on them. My master often said that when you ask someone for help, you must adopt the right attitude. As for wanting to discard them once you’re free—that’s a matter for later.
