I glanced up and said, "Let's get back to the surface and continue on our path. This so-called Li You's Tomb has nothing to do with us. Now is our chance; we can sneak up and keep heading towards Aba to find Yue Master." Suddenly, I thought of Cold Bench. "As for our master, his skills are exceptional, and being an Old School practitioner, Third Granduncle Master shouldn't give him too much trouble. Besides, he..." He had even sold out A Li.
My junior brother suddenly realized, " Senior Brother, so you let A Chen and the others go first with this in mind!"
At that moment, it seemed like Liuzi and the others had arrived, urging from the other side, "Next group, hurry up!"
I also urged Old Qiao, "Are we going or not? Give me an answer!"
Old Qiao furrowed his brow, seemingly weighing something. I added fuel to the fire by looking at A Li for her opinion. As expected, she nodded decisively, "If Brother Qian Yi goes, then I will too."
I smiled lightly and turned to my junior brother. He shrugged nonchalantly, "I'm fine either way."
With that reassurance, I felt more confident—three against one—as I looked at Old Qiao.
Old Qiao appeared troubled, remaining silent for a moment. His lips moved as if he was about to speak when suddenly the Quicksand Pit next to us began to stir violently, churning like a raging sea. All the Corpse Bugs were tossed about in this massive wave, flipping over like chestnuts in a hot pan... In an instant, the crimson sand sea and the green Corpse Bugs surged downward together. Accompanied by a series of mechanical sounds that clicked ominously, within less than five seconds, the Quicksand Pit revealed its bottom. When we saw what lay at the bottom of the pit, we couldn't help but gasp in shock.
From the Bagua Underground Palace to Emerald Villa and Qinling Shaft, then to the previous Bloodsucking Tree and Spider Cave, my capacity for handling shocking sights had greatly improved; I was no longer that naive rookie who would be startled by everything. However, when I saw the Quicksand gradually leaking through the gaps at the bottom of the pit and revealing what lay beneath, I was still taken aback. My scalp tingled and goosebumps erupted all over me.
Even during anatomy class when my teacher asked me to fish out bodies from a Formalin pool, I had never encountered such a terrifying scene.
Beneath the crimson sand layer was a large iron cage about six meters deep and without a cover. The places where the Quicksand leaked were lined with vertical iron bars—each about five centimeters wide and flat—with only two centimeters of space between them. The Quicksand could pass through, but the Corpse Bugs were trapped inside.
The overwhelming red light gradually faded, replaced by a phosphorescent green glow that densely covered and intertwined with the layers of decaying corpses at the bottom of the pool. My earlier guess had been correct; this was indeed a vast Burning Pit.
Such a scene, such a shock, left me at a loss for words; it was beyond mere "shock." I vividly remembered feeling as if countless long-legged insects were crawling inside my stomach, their delicate antennae hooking into my stomach walls, causing an unbearable itch and pain that nearly made me vomit.
Due to my profession, I had encountered many corpses—clothed and unclothed, male and female, old and young, whole and dismembered, opened and intact... Yet none of those could compare to the grotesqueness here; it was truly revolting.
Upon reflection, I realized that the corpses I had seen before shared a common characteristic: their skin was smooth and had ceased to rot. In contrast, the bodies here had been buried beneath quicksand for years, preserved or catalyzed by the unique environment, resulting in an extremely slow decay. Most were still in the early to mid-stages of decomposition; their flesh was partially rotted but not completely separated from the soft tissues. Their faces were tinged with blue, showing signs of poisoning, with various internal organs—brain, eyeballs, throat, intestines, reproductive organs—exposed. The blood had dried up, but there was soft tissue mucus and phosphorescence.
What was even more disturbing was the countless Corpse Bugs scuttling through their brains, eyes, ears, mouths, necks, bellies, intestines, emitting an unimaginable stench of decay that nearly suffocated me.
Suddenly, I recalled that just moments ago, those Corpse Bugs had crawled across my face and mouth... Ah! A wave of nausea hit me as I immediately retched.
At that moment, I noticed two corpses that appeared quite fresh. Although their bellies had been hollowed out by Corpse Bugs, blood still flowed within them; it hadn't dried yet. Given the unique conditions here, I estimated they had died no more than two weeks ago. They were likely part of the group of Tomb Raiders who entered earlier along with that Yuan Da Tou; three of them were already dead.
A tightness gripped my heart; it seemed this Li You's Tomb was indeed not easy to navigate.
The others gradually regained their composure from the shock as voices urging us to move quickly echoed from the unseen darkness. This time it was Cold Bench calling out: "Come on! The stench from these corpses is toxic!"
Old Qiao had no intention of returning with me; upon hearing Cold Bench's warning, he immediately rallied his junior disciple: "Come on! Let's go!"
The junior disciple lacked resolve; as soon as Old Qiao urged him on, he scrambled up the Safety Rope with an eagerness that surpassed even Old Qiao's. It infuriated me to see him so hasty.
" Brother Qian Yi, are you afraid of ghosts?" A Li's reminder struck me like a bolt of lightning. It only made me angrier! Damn it! If he was afraid of ghosts, why rush ahead so quickly? If he just followed me back, we wouldn't have to deal with any of this!
A Li looked at me and said, "So what should we do? Should we go or follow them? I'll listen to you."
I thought to myself, what else can we do? Can we just leave them behind? But I knew I couldn't vent my frustration on A Li, so I stayed silent and kept my eyes on Old Qiao and the others as they navigated through the dangerous area. Finally, I said, "Let's go, keep up."
A Li seemed to have anticipated my response; she smiled faintly and followed me onto the Safety Rope.
This level of physical challenge was usually a piece of cake for us, like Zhang Fei eating bean sprouts. However, given the current circumstances, with the depths below filled with the chaotic flow of Intestines and the Azure Wind Corpse lurking beneath, along with the Corpse Bugs that scuttled around looking for flesh, it was hard not to feel anxious.
Fortunately, having another person with me made it easier. Knowing I wasn't fighting this battle alone helped ease my mind significantly.
As we climbed further into the middle section of the danger zone, the rope sank lower. The Corpse Bugs below jumped up and nearly collided with my backside.
The sensation of their large pincers grabbing flesh was still fresh in my memory. My limbs began to tremble involuntarily, and my heart raced so fast it felt like it might burst from my chest. Even my mind resonated with the rhythm, as if another heart had grown inside me, pounding away—thump, thump, thump—truly vibrating!
