I hurriedly shielded my and A Li's heads with my arms, glancing up just in time to see that the group of Meteor Monsters had been stunned by the sudden barrage of falling rocks. However, many of them still survived, flailing about like headless flies. Wherever they collided, clouds of white smoke billowed up, and chaos ensued.
The source of the noise was chaotic; the ground shook violently, and debris flew everywhere. I confirmed that this creature indeed relied on sound to determine its position.
Damn it, if we don’t escape now, when will we?!
I squeezed A Li's shoulder, and she lifted her head from my arm. I quickly made a shushing gesture and signaled for her to prepare to move forward slowly.
After the initial explosion, several aftershocks followed. The cave we were in was almost at the bottom of Dong Ya, yet it was still being blown apart. It looked like it was about to collapse any moment.
My shoulder was struck by falling debris multiple times, leaving a large gash that bled down my arm. The ground beneath me was uneven, and I didn’t know how many times I had twisted my ankle; the pain was excruciating! A Li had also been injured, but her wounds weren’t serious. Now she was supporting me as we hobbled toward the cave entrance.
The crackling sound of electricity pursued us relentlessly, sending chills down my spine. I couldn’t afford to stop for even a moment; every part of me hurt terribly, yet I dared not take a deep breath! It was a dire situation.
The beam of my flashlight gradually illuminated the cave entrance—twenty meters away, at most just twenty meters. My heart raced with urgency; I wished I could sprout wings and fly over there immediately.
Ten meters, nine meters—getting closer… closer—six meters, five meters… Just then, a loud crash echoed from behind us. My heart sank instantly; what now? Turning around, I saw that the ceiling had collapsed!
Red dust swirled as large boulders rolled toward us at an alarming speed. In an instant, they were upon us. I barely had time to shout “Jump!” before feeling a gust of wind rush past me. With all my strength, I leaped out of the cave.
Fortunately, the cave entrance wasn’t high off the ground. We tumbled out together and narrowly escaped disaster.
Voices from a few people echoed from the crumbling Dong Ya, seemingly discussing which mountain peak to bomb next. Ignoring the wounds on my body, I looked up to see a vast expanse of blood-red Meteor Monsters in the depths of the smoking ruins, as if they had heard a summons, flapping their Chuan Shan Claws and surging forward. From deep within the cave, countless creatures awakened by the explosions broke free from the giant web, and in just a few seconds, Dong Ya was stained crimson.
The idiots above continued to shout about where to bomb next, completely oblivious to the imminent threat of death. In a moment of desperation, I shouted, "Hey! You fools, that thing responds to sound! Stop bombing!" As soon as I finished speaking, the group of Meteor Monsters above took flight, and chaos erupted among the crowd. Heart-wrenching screams filled the air, truly a tragic sound.
My shout had already attracted the nearby Meteor Monsters, who came rushing toward us with a hissing sound, turning the sky above into a sea of red.
Cursing under my breath, I quickly took off my jacket and aimlessly waved it over my head. Damn it, I needed to protect my head first; I wouldn’t go down as a headless ghost. With more space to move than when we were cramped in the cave, A Li swiftly unleashed her Nine-Tailed Whip. With one crack of the whip, she sent several monsters flying; however, more Meteor Monsters quickly filled their places, charging forward relentlessly.
"Guang Yi Ge," A Li said while whipping away furiously, "there are more and more of them! What do we do?"
I raised my flashlight and scanned ahead. "There’s still a path ahead; let’s run for it!"
We each swung our weapons around us to temporarily push back the nearby Meteor Monsters, clearing a way as we fled for our lives.
At that moment, a familiar voice came from behind us: "Everyone quiet down and follow those two in front."
I paused at the sound; it seemed somewhat familiar. But there was no time to ponder; I focused on keeping up with A Li and sprinted forward at full speed.
We raced down the mountain path leading away from Dong Ya without knowing where we were headed. As we ran, I gradually began to hear splashing sounds beneath our feet. Suddenly remembering that I had seen traces of flowing water on stones nearby earlier, I had thought it had dried up long ago. To my surprise, there was still water here; judging by the sound, it wasn’t deep—just enough to wet our soles.
The hissing sound of electricity crackled incessantly behind us, loud enough to feel like high-voltage wires were leaking everywhere. The noise throbbed painfully in my ears and made my head pound. An unnameable anger surged within me; damn it all—I wanted to curse out loud!
Among those behind us, a few couldn’t hold back their curses. Just as one spoke up, a scream followed immediately after. The familiar voice shouted angrily, "You fools! Shut up!"
Just then, the flashlight illuminated a spot about fifteen meters ahead, and to my dismay, it revealed a dead end! A massive stone wall blocked our path!
We were running at full speed, and in the blink of an eye, we had reached the stone wall. Just as we came to a halt, a large group of crimson Meteor Monsters lunged at us. I quickly shook off my clothes, cursing as I swung my weapon. Everyone else reacted instantly, raising their weapons and striking wildly, with piercing screams echoing around us.
This wave of Meteor Monsters was ferocious. The Chuan Shan Claw struck swiftly and brutally, tearing into flesh and exposing the white bones beneath! It seemed intent on killing us all right there.
Unfortunately, my clothes barely withstood a few swipes before being shredded to tatters by the Chuan Shan Claw. I cursed loudly, drew my staff, and rolled onto the ground, positioning myself in front of everyone. I swept my staff over the densely packed Meteor Monsters, unleashing a cloud of white powder. I shouted to the others, “Fall back! Xin Du Fen!” With another sweeping motion, those Meteor Monsters that got hit by the toxic powder fell limp like fighter planes struck by torpedoes, crashing straight to the ground. After several rounds of releasing the poison, we managed to control the situation for the time being.
This toxic powder was something I had prepared for dealing with Illusionists. It was one of my proud creations, made from stone gall, vermilion, alum, and pityriasis stone, each stuffed into living scorpions, spiders, centipedes, and toads. These were ground in four copper furnaces and combined with my blood as a catalyst. Sealed in porcelain bottles with live wax due to time constraints, I only managed to brew it for thirty-six days (the complete process should involve storing it in an ice spring pool for forty-nine days before extracting it and sealing it again). Using artificial distillation methods allowed me to extract its essence. It was truly one of my proudest achievements since leaving Yue Master.
After using it against the blood people at Emerald Villa, I immediately set about making more. For convenience in carrying it this time, I made it into solid powder form that only caused contact infection and was non-toxic when dispersed in the air. My mind had been so tense that I had forgotten my own skills until desperation struck.
Everyone stared at me in shock, retreating behind me but keeping a safe distance, their faces reflecting both amazement and fear. Suddenly, a voice from the crowd shouted, “What? Is that really you?”
I turned to look and was taken aback; it was… “A Chen?” Looking further back revealed familiar faces! Third Granduncle Master, Liu Zi, and a woman dressed like a Witch, followed by several soldiers.
The voice I had just recognized belonged to none other than Third Granduncle Master!
