It was a massive dark red web woven from countless electric currents, with threads as fine as embroidery needles, twisting and intertwining to emit a crackling sound.
Upon closer inspection, the web was dotted with numerous dark red translucent particles the size of soybeans. Each particle seemed to be encased in a layer of transparent glass, growing darker towards the center, resembling aged blood. Tiny electric bubbles fizzed outwards, and when they struck the glass shell, they left behind pockmarked grayish molten spots.
I couldn't help but swallow hard. Could this possibly be the legendary Moon Meteorite?
Poor Old Chui had ventured with his junior brother Xing Ye ten years ago to seek stones in Yue Shan but returned empty-handed. Now, a decade later, this Moon Meteorite was presented before me? How could I refuse such a gift? I had no reason not to accept it graciously!
I felt an inexplicable urge to reach out and touch it, but A Li quickly stopped me, gesturing for me to look at the piece of meteorite in front of my fingertips. " Brother Qian Yi, look underneath. There are three long claws that resemble nails."
A Li's reminder made me notice that beneath the meteorite were three claws about three centimeters long. The thickest part measured one centimeter wide, tapering to sharp points that curled slightly inward. One claw stood out particularly, resembling the third claw of a pangolin; its color was a translucent light red, hidden among the electric currents and difficult to detect. My focus had been entirely on the meteorite, and I hadn't realized it possessed such sharp claws. Moreover, these claws were disproportionately long compared to the small size of the meteorite; who would expect something so small to have such lengthy appendages? It seemed likely that their function extended beyond mere decoration.
Could it be that this meteorite had come to life?
A Li continued, "There are also some on top; they seem symmetrical—six in total. Brother Qian Yi, look here; each particle has them on both sides."
As I observed and nodded along, an unsettling premonition arose within me. I muttered to myself, "I hope they don’t suddenly turn into wings; that would be troublesome!"
A Li made a gesture to retreat, lowering his voice as if afraid of waking these creatures. " Brother Qian Yi, let’s get out of here while they’re still asleep!"
At that moment, I began to discern some clues and whispered back to A Li, "Not yet. Look at how these meteorites are arranged; it's not random. See here? These three meteorites form a human shape, while those nearby create a cave. Behind the cave is a dark river made up of these Electric Nets. A Li, that person we saw earlier appeared here again; he seems to have come from the cave and crossed the dark river... Wait! Something must have happened in the dark river! Originally there were three meteorites forming this figure, but now there are four—he must have gained something in his hand! A Li, this is a narrative map! I bet this story isn’t finished yet; it’s neither the beginning nor the end but rather part of the middle. With so many caves here, each one must contain a similar map; only when connected will they form a complete story!"
I grew increasingly excited, unable to contain myself, completely unaware that my voice had risen to a considerable height. By the time A Li tried to cover my mouth, it was already too late. Suddenly, the Electric Net crackled with a loud "pop," and Pangolin's claws began to twitch. In no time, it tore through the restraints binding it and sizzled as it broke free from the net. I had guessed correctly; those claws also had the ability to fly.
At the moment the Meteor Monster took off, its originally translucent claws transformed into a deep crimson color, crackling with electricity. However, lacking eyes, it could only flail around in the air like a headless fly. In less than half a minute, all the meteors broke free from the giant net, and thousands of dark red particles turned the cave into a sea of blood.
I was so astonished that I couldn't speak, my mind racing with a hundred thousand questions. It felt as if countless fluttering bills were flying away right before my eyes, and I instinctively reached out to grab them.
At that moment, one of the Meteor Monsters crashed into a stone seal about the size of a bowl. With three sharp claws scraping against it, the seal instantly developed three long cracks, hissing as white smoke poured out, and in the blink of an eye, it shattered into countless tiny fragments.
A chill ran down my spine as cold sweat broke out all over me; my mind suddenly cleared up quite a bit. So that was how all these fragments came to be! I had truly underestimated the destructive power of those claws! I couldn't help but think that if that claw had scratched my back just now, I would have been torn to shreds!
I hurriedly grabbed A Li's hand and stammered, "Let's... let's go, hurry!"
Both of us scrambled backward in panic. Just as we reached the cave entrance, my anxiety got the better of me. Reflexively wanting to stand up, I completely forgot where I was! As a result, my head thudded against the granite above me with a solid bang.
The sound and vibration from that collision were astonishing. The Meteor Monsters inside the low cave turned toward us in response, and a wave of red light surged toward us like a tide.
For some reason, my mind flashed back to when I went with my junior disciple to poke a hornet's nest. The moment the nest hit the ground, countless buzzing hornets swarmed out in a dark cloud. That scene was something even an army couldn't withstand! But compared to what we faced now, it felt like comparing an ant to a giant!
A Li thought I had gone dumb from fear; she called my name while dragging me backward. When I finally snapped back to reality, that blood-red mass of lightning was almost upon us. Startled into action, I jumped up and pulled A Li down beside me as we ran forward desperately.
But running on two legs couldn’t possibly outrun six flying legs; within just a few meters, we were surrounded by the Meteor Monsters.
A Li was pale with fear, her teeth biting down on her lower lip until it nearly bled as she gripped my hand tightly and looked at me anxiously. In that split second of panic, an idea struck me like lightning; I pressed A Li's shoulder down and pushed her onto the ground while I quickly flipped over to lie face down beside her. Whispering urgently in her ear, I said, "Don't make a sound; this guy can hear us."
This is truly a gamble with our lives! What if the Meteor Monster has exceptional hearing and can detect even our whispers and the pounding of our hearts? And what if it doesn't just rely on sound, but also uses body temperature to determine our location? Furthermore, what if it gets lucky and accidentally bumps into us from behind? I could hardly bear to think any further; my heart was racing as if it would leap out of my mouth.
At that critical moment of life and death, a tremendous explosion suddenly echoed from above, and almost simultaneously, the cave began to shake violently. Large rocks tumbled down from all directions, crashing onto us.
I was taken aback; someone really did blow up the mountain!
