Mo Wen covered his face with both hands, wiping the sweat from his brow as he picked up Xiao Hei and entered the forest. He needed to find a suitable place to spend the night before darkness fell. He couldn't return to the wooden cabin in the woods; the White-Clad Woman had already discovered his presence. If she abandoned her pursuit of Old Lu to come after him, she would undoubtedly head for the cabin. After all, for someone of her skill, finding that small cabin would be far too easy. Moreover, Old Lu had warned him against lingering.
Still, he made a brief return to the cabin, a place where he had lived for three or four years, and it was hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia. He stood in front of the cabin for a moment before taking Xiao Hei to the hot spring on the back mountain. As he gazed at the spring, memories of the past few years flooded his mind, and he couldn't help but sigh, "This place will probably become a Demon Beast's Cave in a few days." While Mo Wen was lost in thought, Xiao Hei, who had been following him, jumped straight into the pool and began swimming around joyfully.
"Xiao Hei, we need to go," Mo Wen said with resignation as he watched Xiao Hei having so much fun. "If you like it here, we can find a spring ten times bigger than this one in the future." Upon hearing Mo Wen's words, Xiao Hei immediately leaped out of the pool and shook off the water from its fur. The pair exited the cave and disappeared into the forest, leaving behind a hot spring that froze over in their absence.
...
"Xiao Hei, where do you think we should look for a place to spend the night?" Mo Wen had never camped in the wild before. Although Old Lu had taught him some relevant knowledge, knowledge was just that—knowledge. Without practical experience, he felt utterly lost now. The forest was quite dark, and there might be Chimeras lurking about at night. As for caves, they were out of the question; those were typically occupied by Demon Beasts. This area was known to be perilous, with far more Demon Beasts and Chimeras than outside, making both options untenable. The only suitable places left for overnight shelter were either on top of a mountain or in a tree. However, when he climbed up to look out from the treetops, all he could see were endless trees stretching as far as the eye could see. He suddenly felt overwhelmed and could only turn to Xiao Hei for guidance, but Xiao Hei couldn’t respond.
During his preparation to escape, Mo Wen had discussed routes out of the forest with Old Lu because Old Lu had given him an Identity Tag indicating Lianyun Kingdom and instructed him to head toward Lianyun Empire. Thus, he could only choose to go in the direction of Lianyun Kingdom; if he ended up in either of the other two Empires, he would attract unnecessary trouble due to his identity. Following the usual route downstream along Yan Luo River would be the fastest way; however, that area was known to be crowded with Demon Beasts and Chimeras, not to mention that unknown dangers lurked within the river itself. The safest route would be to head east away from the riverbank and then turn south.
Mo Wen navigated through the forest with Xiao Hei by his side, moving eastward while the roaring sound of Dahe River gradually faded behind them. Towering trees loomed around them, their massive canopies blocking most of the sunlight; only beams of light filtered through gaps in the leaves and illuminated patches on the ground below. Periodically, Mo Wen would climb up a large tree to determine his direction and ensure he was on track while also scanning for potential dangers ahead. From atop a tree, he could see far into the distance with his keen eyesight; however, standing on the ground limited his view due to surrounding trees obstructing his line of sight. Relying solely on his instincts could lead him into danger before he even realized it.
