Summer Fireflies

July carries the essence of midsummer.
The sun hangs in the sky like a massive fireball, scorching the earth below. Cicadas tirelessly call from the trees, as if urging summer to hasten its pace, to become even more fervent.
But in the evening, as the afterglow of the setting sun paints the horizon red, the heat gradually dissipates. A gentle breeze sweeps in from the rice fields, mingling with the fragrance of the earth and the fresh scent of ripening rice, bringing a refreshing comfort.
Xiao You loves this time of day most.
Barefoot, she walks along the ridge of the fields, feeling the softness and coolness of the soil beneath her feet. On either side of her are lush green rice paddies, resembling a vast ocean of green that stretches into the distance.
"Xiao You, slow down! Don't fall!" came her grandmother's gentle voice from behind.
Xiao You turned around, grinning widely as she replied, "Grandma, I'm not afraid!"
Having grown up on this land, she feels a deep affection for every blade of grass and every tree here. She knows every little path along the ridge, every stone, and every wildflower.
Her grandmother held a fan made of cattail leaves, gently fanning herself. She watched Xiao You joyfully run along the ridge, a loving smile spreading across her face.
"Grandma, look! There are so many fireflies over there!" Xiao You exclaimed, pointing excitedly at a distant field. Grandma followed the direction Xiao You was pointing, and sure enough, there was a cluster of twinkling lights—like falling stars dancing across the night sky. "Yes, the fireflies have come out," her grandmother said.
Fireflies are the spirits of summer nights, appearing only in the cleanest and purest places. The small village where Xiao You lives is far from the hustle and bustle of the city, preserving the most primitive natural scenery, making it a paradise for fireflies.
Xiao You ran to her grandmother, linking her arm with hers, and sweetly said, "Grandma, let's go see the fireflies!"
Her grandmother nodded, "Alright, let's go see the fireflies."
The two of them walked slowly along the path, heading towards the field where the fireflies gathered.
As night fell, the sky turned a deep blue, like a giant curtain sprinkled with countless shining stars.
The glow of the fireflies grew brighter as they danced in the rice fields, resembling tiny lanterns illuminating the tranquil night sky.
Xiao You spread her arms and ran among the fireflies, her laughter ringing like silver bells. She felt as if she had transformed into a firefly herself, flying freely in this starry field.
"Grandma, look how beautiful they are!" Xiao You exclaimed excitedly.
Her grandmother smiled and nodded, "Yes, they are a gift of summer."
Xiao You ran to a patch of grass and gently crouched down. She spotted a firefly resting on a leaf, emitting a faint glow.
Carefully, she reached out her hand, wanting to cradle the firefly in her palm.
"Grandma, why do fireflies glow?" Xiao You asked curiously.
Grandma walked over to Xiao You, looking at her kindly. "They are searching for their companions, just like we humans do. Finding friends means you won't be lonely."
"Companions?" Xiao You blinked. "Do they need friends too?"
"Of course," Grandma said, gently patting Xiao You's head. "All living things need companionship, and fireflies are no exception. They communicate with light to find each other."
Xiao You nodded, half-understanding. She gazed at the twinkling fireflies, thinking that they must be trying hard to find their friends. Was their light saying, "Hello"?
She carefully released the fireflies, watching them fly off into the distance, disappearing into the night sky.
"Grandma, let's go home," Xiao You said.
Grandma nodded, taking Xiao You's hand as they slowly walked back home along the path between the fields.
The moonlight poured over them, stretching their shadows long and thin.
