He chuckled lightly, "Not bad. But there’s something even more important."
"What is it?"
"Choice." He stepped down the stairs to meet my gaze. "In Hengsheng, you must make choices at all times. And your choices will determine your future."
I looked into his deep eyes and suddenly realized that this was not just a piece of advice, but an invitation.
Just then, a black sedan pulled up in front of us. Lu Chen opened the car door, "Need a ride?"
I hesitated for a moment before nodding.
As I settled into the car, I watched the night scenery rush by outside the window, my heartbeat still unable to calm down. Everything that had happened tonight felt like a meticulously orchestrated play, and I seemed to have unwittingly become one of its main characters.
Fate's Gears continued to turn, and I knew that from this moment on, my life would change completely.
Morning sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows into the office as I sat at my desk, my fingers unconsciously tapping on the keyboard. Last night’s experiences felt like a dream, but the unread message from Zhang Ming on my phone reminded me that it was all real.
"Su Wan," Chen Mo leaned over and whispered, "I heard something went wrong at last night’s party?"
Just as I was about to respond, the office door was suddenly pushed open. Zhang Ming walked in, his face darker than usual, scanning the room before finally locking eyes with me.
"Su Wan," his voice carried a barely perceptible tremor, "come to my office."
I stood up, feeling all eyes in the room on me. Chen Mo looked at me with concern and made a cautious gesture with his lips.
As I entered the manager's office, Zhang Ming immediately shut the door and pulled down the blinds. When he turned around, I noticed beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
"About last night," he said bluntly, "you saw nothing and heard nothing, understand?"
I silently stared at him. The sunlight filtering through the blinds cast long shadows on his face, making him appear particularly gloomy.
"If you're smart," he took a step closer, "you should know the consequences of choosing the wrong side in Hengsheng."
I stepped back until my back hit the wall. "Manager Zhang, I don’t understand what you mean."
"Stop playing dumb!" he suddenly raised his voice. "Do you think climbing up to Lu Chen means you’re safe? Let me tell you, in Hengsheng, no one can stay at the top forever!"
At that moment, the office door swung open again. Lin Yue stood at the entrance holding a document. "Manager Zhang, manager Lu wants to see you in his office."
Zhang Ming's face instantly turned pale. He adjusted his tie and forced himself to appear calm as he said, "Okay, I'll go right away."
Once he left, Lin Yue closed the door and sighed. "Are you okay?"
I shook my head. "He seems really scared."
"He is certainly afraid," Lin Yue sneered. "Lu Chen despises those who engage in underhanded tactics. As for Zhang Ming, he is likely in serious trouble this time."
I hesitated for a moment and asked, "What about me...?"
"You?" Lin Yue interrupted me. "Not only are you fine, but you might actually benefit from this misfortune."
I couldn't help but look at her in confusion. What did she mean by that?
"Lu Chen values principled people the most," she explained. "Your decision not to follow Zhang Ming's instructions last night pleased him greatly."
