As night fell, we hurried to Changling Village. Unlike during the day, the ruins under the moonlight appeared particularly eerie. The collapsed houses cast long shadows, resembling lurking monsters.
"Something's not right," Honda Miho suddenly said. "Look at those shadows."
By the light of the moon, we were horrified to discover that the shadows on the ground were indeed writhing! Those irregular dark shapes slowly twisted, gradually forming human-like outlines.
"Quick, hide!" Jiang Zhendong pulled us into a dilapidated house.
Through the cracks in the wall, we saw shadowy figures rising from the ground. They resembled humans, their bodies semi-transparent, floating in the air. The most bizarre part was that they all wore bronze masks.
"This is..." Zhou Jing gasped.
"The souls of the sacrificed," Honda Miho whispered. "Those who died in the experiments. Their souls are bound by the masks, unable to leave this place."
A sound of metal clashing echoed from a distance. We peeked out and discovered that someone was moving around near the abandoned altar. In the moonlight, we could see Nakamura Kenichi and a few subordinates clearing away debris.
"What are they looking for?" Jiang Zhendong raised his binoculars.
Through the lenses, I saw Nakamura holding a notebook, occasionally checking something against it. Suddenly, he seemed to discover something important and shouted excitedly.
"Here! The direction of the altar is indeed correct!"
They moved aside a stone slab, revealing a hidden compartment beneath. Nakamura retrieved a copper box from inside and opened it with an excited laugh: "Found it! Finally found it!"
At that moment, the floating shadows suddenly became agitated. They gathered around the altar, emitting painful moans. I noticed that the masks on their faces began to glow, resonating with the light from Nakamura's copper box.
"This is bad!" Honda Miho's face changed dramatically. "They're going to open the seal!"
As soon as she spoke, a powerful force erupted from the altar. All the shadows were drawn into it, distorting even the moonlight. The ground began to tremble as a crack spread open.
"He’s lost it!" Honda Miho shouted. "If he opens the seal now, all those souls will—"
A loud crash interrupted her words. The ground of the altar collapsed, revealing a deep pit. Countless blood-red pillars of light surged forth from within, intertwining in a massive web under the moonlight.
"The Web of Gods," a voice suddenly rang out. We turned around to see Li Yang appearing behind us without us noticing. "They want to use the power of these restless souls to rebuild a bridge to that realm."
"That realm?"
"A sealed dimension," he said. "It is inhabited by ancient beings. The experiments conducted by the forces aimed to open a door to there."
The tremors intensified beneath our feet. We saw Nakamura standing at the edge of the altar, holding up the copper box high. The blood-red glow enveloped him as his body began to twist and contort.
"Come on!" He let out a maniacal laugh. "Let these unwilling souls bear witness to the arrival of our god!"
"We must stop him!" I drew my pistol.
Wait, Li Yang stopped me; ordinary bullets were useless against him. Before he could finish his sentence, a piercing scream shattered the night sky. We saw Nakamura's body engulfed completely by a surge of blood, transforming into a massive monster!
The creature was entirely blood-red, covered in twisted masks. Each mask wailed as if it bore the suffering of countless souls. At its chest, a bronze box radiated blinding light.
Children, it emitted Nakamura's voice, mixed with the anguished moans of many, calling us to witness a true miracle!
Gigantic tentacles extended from its body, reaching out toward us. At the same time, an ancient whisper echoed from deep underground, as if something was awakening.
Run! Li Yang shouted, throwing a bronze mask at me. Put it on! It's our only protection!
