For several consecutive days, the atmosphere between us had dropped to freezing point. I wanted to ask him or explain something several times, but seeing his distant demeanor made the words stick in my throat, filled with feelings of grievance, loss, and sadness... A whirlwind of emotions tangled within me.
On Wednesday afternoon after school, I packed my things and prepared to go home, only to find Lu Xingyan still sitting at his desk, frowning deeply as if he was facing some difficult problem.
I hesitated for a moment but couldn't help but softly ask, "Are you... okay?"
He looked up at me with a complex expression in his eyes. He opened his mouth as if to say something but ultimately just shook his head and lowered it again.
Just then, Sun Rui appeared again. She was holding a beautifully wrapped gift box and walked over to Lu Xingyan's desk with a sweet smile. "Xingyan, this is for you. I had someone bring it from abroad."
Lu Xingyan frowned even more, not even glancing at the box. His tone was cold and firm. "No need, I already have one."
"Just take it as my birthday gift to you!" Sun Rui insisted, shoving the box into his arms. "I know your birthday is coming up!"
Lu Xingyan's expression darkened further; he seemed like he wanted to return the box, but Sun Rui had already laughed and run away.
I stood by and witnessed everything, feeling even worse inside. So it turned out his birthday was approaching... and I didn't even know about it. Yet Sun Rui could generously give him such an expensive gift.
Silently, I slung my backpack over my shoulder and turned to leave.
"Xia Zhi."
Lu Xingyan suddenly called out to me.
I stopped in my tracks without turning around.
"About that box," his voice came from behind me, tinged with a barely noticeable... irritation? "I don't want it."
I didn't understand why he felt the need to explain this to me; my heart felt even more chaotic.
"Okay," I replied softly.
As I walked out of the school building, I felt tears finally escape my eyes. I didn't know why I was crying—was it because of the malice on the forum, or Lu Xingyan's indifference? Or perhaps... it was the undeniable sourness I felt when seeing him interact with another girl.
Maybe he and I were ultimately just people from two different worlds. Those so-called "closeness" and "differences" were merely my illusions. He was so exceptional...
Lost in my own sorrowful thoughts, suddenly someone grabbed my wrist.
I turned in surprise to see Lu Xingyan standing behind me, slightly out of breath as if he had run over. His hands were empty; the earphone gift box was nowhere in sight.
"What are you..."
"Come with me." He said no more than that as he pulled me along.
I stumbled slightly as I followed Lu Xingyan. His grip was firm, and the warmth of his palm seeped through the thin fabric of my school uniform, sending shivers down my spine.
He pulled me into a secluded alley near the back gate of the school and finally stopped. It was quiet here, just the two of us.
He released my wrist and turned to face me. The dim light from the streetlamp cast shadows that highlighted his tense jawline.
"Why aren't you happy?" he asked, his voice low and tinged with a hint of unnoticeable tension.
His question caught me off guard, and I instinctively looked away. "I'm not…"
"You are." He interrupted me, his tone firm. "You've been avoiding me these past few days."
"You were the one avoiding me!" I couldn't hold back any longer, feeling wronged as I complained, "You haven't been talking to me at all, and… I even saw Sun Rui giving you gifts." The last part of my thought remained unspoken.
He seemed momentarily taken aback, his gaze flickering as his ears began to redden. "I wasn't… I just…" He appeared at a loss for words.
"What just?" I pressed, feeling both aggrieved and secretly hopeful.
He took a deep breath, his eyes locking onto my face with an unprecedented seriousness. "About what happened on the forum, I saw it."
My heart sank. Just as I feared…
