Half a year had passed since the two of them began their relationship, and it was truly a stretch to speak so casually about it.
Deng Ting smiled and said, "Well, let's not pry too much into the affairs of the young. A Yu, remember to come home for a meal when you return to Jiangzhou during National Day. Your grandfather has been talking about you all the time; make sure to visit him more often."
"Sure," A Yu replied.
Deng Ting stood up and continued, "It's getting late; you should head back and rest!"
After sending Jiang Shiyu off, Deng Ting began to inquire, "So, you two have really been together for half a year?"
Having already told a lie, Yun Li bit her lip and nodded.
Deng Ting appeared pleased. "Ah! I thought A Yu was a good match from the first time I met him. I just didn't expect you two to make progress. I thought you liked that senior He!"
"Mom, I've explained this before. My relationship with the senior is purely platonic; you keep overthinking it."
Yun Zheng stood up with his hands clasped behind his back, adopting a serious tone typical of an elder. "We won't interfere too much in your romantic life, even though he is Uncle Jiang's grandson. But he is who he is, and Uncle Jiang is Uncle Jiang. It's fine to be friends, but you should think carefully before becoming lovers."
The Jiang family held significant wealth and status in Jiangzhou, and Yun Zheng didn't want his daughter to marry into such a powerful family only to feel constrained.
"You need to think this through. If it's just a fling, don't let it lead to something serious. But if you're considering a long-term relationship, I'll help pave the way for you. Just reflect on whether this relationship can last a lifetime."
Yun Li nodded obediently. "I understand, Dad."
Deng Ting disagreed with Yun Zheng's perspective. "Although the Jiang family is wealthy, Uncle Jiang is a good person, and there aren't many complications in their family. His parents separated long ago; now it's just him and his uncle—it's quite straightforward! Plus, with Uncle Jiang around, he won't let our Hao Hao suffer."
"You think too simply," Yun Zheng countered. "Have you considered why they separated?"
"In my opinion," Deng Ting continued, "you should look for someone from a warm family environment with no character flaws; that's how life can be lived well. If it's always chaotic, how can we get by?"
This was the first time Yun Zheng and Deng Ting had disagreed; they had always consulted Deng Ting on matters big and small. This time, however, regarding Yun Li's marriage, they found themselves at odds.
Deng Ting frowned and crossed her arms as she looked at him. Yun Zheng conceded defeat. "Fine, I won't say more; ultimately, it will depend on Hao Hao's feelings."
Yun Li embraced both of them with a helpless smile. "Alright, you two are old enough not to overthink things. I'm thirty years old; I can handle these matters myself."
Deng Ting pinched her cheek playfully. "At thirty years old, you're still my daughter! As long as I'm alive, I'll keep an eye on you."
"Old Yun," she added teasingly, "aren't you fond of high achievers? A Yu graduated from Stanford in the U.S., working at the Aerospace Research Institute—he's also quite handsome. Our future children will definitely be smart!"
Yun Zheng was not convinced. "High achievers also need to meet certain conditions; we can't overlook other factors just because of their education level. We haven't spent much time with him yet; let's not rush into any decisions."
Deng Ting scoffed lightly. "No matter what, he's still better than that boy from Haohao University you dated before! Choose between that little brat and A Yu."
Yun Li felt a sudden chill run down her spine, her heart hanging precariously in her chest.
Yun Zheng couldn't bear to hear any more about that guy and immediately made a decision. He said lightly, "Looking at it this way, A Yu is much more reliable."
Yun Li didn't want to listen any longer; she quickly left the place filled with gossip.
Once inside her room, she messaged Jiang Shiyu.
"You've gotten yourself into big trouble."
"?"
"Do you know how serious the consequences of speaking carelessly can be?"
Jiang Shiyu smiled at the message, looking innocent. "I didn't speak carelessly!"
"We've indeed been together for about half a year, but not as a couple."
How could he exploit this loophole?
"Anyway, you handle it. My parents are not satisfied with you."
"I just saw them and they seemed quite pleased."
Yun Li sighed as she looked at her phone and quickly typed, "They still don't know you're the one who hurt me back in college. They still hold a grudge against you."
"No, they practically wish to tear you apart."
Even though Yun Li had concealed her heartbreak well after the breakup, Deng Ting and Yun Zheng had seen right through it. She hadn't mentioned bringing a boyfriend home again, but Deng Ting caught her secretly drinking at night when she got up for water.
Yun Li focused intensely on her studies, pushing herself harder than ever, which nearly caused her to injure her back. Fortunately, Yun Zheng was watching over her from outside; he rushed in and took her to the hospital just in time to prevent a disaster.
They didn't know what had happened between the two of them, but seeing their daughter in such pain led them to blame him. They had always referred to him as that little rascal or that scrawny kid.
Jiang Shiyu remained silent for a long time after reading the message.
Yun Li tossed her phone onto the bed without arguing further. After about ten minutes, she finished showering and picked up her phone to find a fresh message waiting for her.
"I will confess and plead for mercy."
Yun Li's eyes widened in shock. "Aren't you just walking into a trap?"
"It has to be resolved sooner or later."
He never considered running away.
