Yun Li remained silent as she pushed him aside and went to heat up the spicy sauce. After placing it in the microwave for three minutes, she opened the cake box and inserted the candles, watching as the numbers began to blur before her eyes.
The last time she celebrated his birthday was when he turned twenty. Now, she realized how time had both dragged on and flown by.
With the candles lit, Yun Li turned off the lights and said, "Make a wish!"
Jiang Shiyu's gaze was fixed on her face throughout, and in the dim room, only this spot was illuminated. The warm orange glow of the flames deepened the darkness of his eyes, making them appear even more intense and profound as he stared at her.
The desire in his eyes was unmistakable, creating an atmosphere that felt somewhat dangerous; the man across from her resembled a wolf or a tiger. A shiver ran down Yun Li's spine under his gaze, and unable to withstand it any longer, she turned to switch on the lights. However, he caught her wrist, and as she looked back at him in confusion, Jiang Shiyu leaned down to blow out the candles.
His large hand cradled her cheek, their breaths mingling in the darkness. His voice was low and husky: "I wished for you."
He leaned down to kiss her, but Yun Li stiffened at his touch. Within three seconds, she pushed him away and turned to switch on the lights again, avoiding his gaze as she began to cut the cake, completely ignoring the raw meaning behind his actions.
This cake was new; she hadn't tasted it before. Today was a blessing because of him.
Jiang Shiyu sat back in his chair, waiting for Yun Li to serve him a piece of mango-flavored cake. He wasn't particularly interested in sweets but ended up eating three large pieces today.
When Yun Li asked if he wanted more, he nodded. However, after he finished the third piece, she sensed something was off and tentatively asked if he wanted any more. Jiang Shiyu continued to nod, but Yun Li fell silent and didn’t serve him any more cake.
Her tone carried a hint of anger: "If I ask you if you want to eat and you say yes—would you eat it if it were poison?"
"Yes," he replied simply.
Yun Li glanced at him again, wondering if he had lost his mind. She brought out the spicy sauce and handed him a pair of gloves: "Try it and see if it's good."
Jiang Shiyu joked, "What if it's not good? Will there be more next time?"
"If it's not good, I won't buy it again."
Jiang Shiyu put on gloves and picked up a piece of duck neck, the intense spiciness exploding on his tongue. He coughed a little, and Yun Li quickly poured him some water. His eyes were slightly red, but he forced his hoarse voice to say, "It's delicious."
Once he calmed down, he continued eating, but the spiciness left his mouth tinged red. Yun Li couldn't bear to watch any longer. "You should stop eating."
Jiang Shiyu's eyes were moist from the heat, yet he smiled, saying he could handle it and that it was tasty. Yun Li went to get him another glass of water, thinking that there was too much chili in the dish. He had become weaker with spicy food compared to before.
After finishing his meal, Jiang Shiyu went to rest. It wasn't until the next day that Yun Li learned he had ended up in the hospital due to the spicy food. He hadn't gone home directly but had gone to the hospital instead. If it weren't for Qin Nianzhe's call, she would have remained in the dark.
She rushed to the hospital without changing her clothes, wearing her pajamas and throwing on a coat. Jiang Shiyu lay weakly on the bed, and when Qin Nianzhe saw her arrive, he got up with a yawn and said, "You're here. I'm going to get some sleep; I haven't closed my eyes all night." He left and closed the door behind him.
When Jiang Shiyu opened his eyes again, it was already noon. Yun Li was sitting in a chair watching him. He froze for a moment before panicking. Propping himself up in bed with a weak voice, he asked, "What are you doing here?"
Yun Li's anger flared up again upon seeing him looking so lifeless after she had just calmed down. "The doctor said you can't eat something that spicy right now! Why did you eat it yesterday?"
Jiang Shiyu lowered his gaze and pressed his lips together. Yun Li was frustrated with him but then thought that it wasn't her pain to bear; why should she be upset? She stood up to leave, thinking that if he wanted to be stubborn, he could stay there alone.
Jiang Shiyu panicked and pulled out the IV from his hand before jumping out of bed to hug her. The sudden force made Yun Li lean forward as she looked down at his hand where blood began to seep out. "You made this yourself; I don't want to waste it."
Yun Li felt a pang of bitterness in her heart as she released his hand and called for a nurse to give him a new IV. After he finished the last bit of fluids and completed the discharge process, they returned home, where Yun Li ordered takeout.
She glanced at the man on the sofa, his face still somewhat pale. Her voice was soft as she said, "Please don't push yourself like that again. I don't like it."
Jiang Shiyu looked at her and replied, "Okay."
On the twentieth, Yun Li was set to attend the He Ling Award in Su City. After a year of preparation for "Zui Zeng Yin," practicing countless times and gaining insights over and over, she felt very confident.
As she sat on the bus heading to the Su City Grand Theatre, Shu Ran sent her a message.
"Hey, did I leave my new bag with you?"
"I don't know; you should check."
"Alright, are you coming straight here after the competition or staying there for the night?"
"If there's nothing else, I'll just come directly."
