Yun Li stayed at Shu Ran's house for a week before returning home. At that moment, she felt as if she had developed a heart of steel, no longer swayed by beauty.
She went to the delivery station to pick up a package and then took out the dumplings her mother had sent from the fridge to cook. Once the dumplings were ready, she served them and was about to eat when there was a knock at the door.
Yun Li got up to peek through the peephole and saw Jiang Shiyu standing at the door, looking like he had just gotten off work. She considered pretending not to be home, but then she heard Jiang Shiyu's voice from outside, "I know you're in there. I'm just dropping something off and I'll leave."
Yun Li glanced down at the crack of the door; no light was seeping through. How did he have such good eyesight? She opened the door a crack, just enough to show her head. "What is it?"
Jiang Shiyu held up a small cake. "New product, want to try?"
Yun Li's eyes brightened for a moment, but she quickly shook her head. "No thanks, I'm cutting out sugar lately." She prepared to close the door, but Jiang Shiyu blocked it with his hand.
"Did you cook?"
"I made some dumplings my mom packed."
He replied, "I just got off work and haven't eaten yet."
"Oh, then take your time cooking."
Jiang Shiyu found her feigned ignorance amusing. "Aren't you going to invite me to try some?"
"My mom's dumplings aren't that good," Yun Li said dismissively.
"It's fine; I can eat anything."
"Are you really that stingy? Not even going to share a single dumpling?"
Yun Li glanced at the cake in his hand and thought about how many meals she had shared with him; one serving of dumplings didn’t seem like much in comparison. She opened the door wider. "Fine, you can cook for yourself."
Jiang Shiyu stepped inside, slipping on a pair of men's slippers that Shu Ran had prepared for him since he often came over to pick her up. He placed the small cake in front of Yun Li and then took off his outer jacket, rolling up his sleeves as he got ready to help with dinner.
He went into the kitchen to cook while Yun Li quickly finished her meal, feeling that something was still missing. She shouted towards the kitchen, "Can you make me two more?" After taking a sip of water, she leaned against her chair and started playing with her phone.
Jiang Shiyu finished cooking and brought two dumplings from his bowl to her. Yun Li didn’t eat them right away; she was so engrossed in her phone that it took her about a minute to remember the two dumplings she hadn’t eaten yet. She picked one up with a fork and popped it into her mouth, finishing both in no time.
She stood up to refill her glass with water. "Could you pour me a cup too?" Jiang Shiyu said.
"Don't you have hands?"
"I'm a guest, and besides, I just cooked you two dumplings. Is it too much to ask for a glass of water?"
Yun Li didn’t argue with him. Instead, she deliberately filled a glass to the brim and walked over, slightly increasing her force as she handed it over. "Here."
The water splashed onto his arm, soaking a large patch of his sleeve. Jiang Shiyu set down his chopsticks and looked at her.
Feigning surprise, Yun Li exclaimed, "Oh no! How clumsy of you! Let me get you a towel." She placed the glass down and went to the bathroom to fetch him a towel.
On the shelf, there were towels labeled for various purposes. She chose one marked for drying feet over the one for cleaning toilets; it would be too disgusting to use something that had touched a toilet on his dishes.
Yun Li tossed him a black towel. "Here, wipe this off."
Jiang Shiyu looked at the towel skeptically. "Are you sure this isn’t a floor rag?"
"You guessed wrong! This is for drying feet," Yun Li thought to herself, secretly pleased while maintaining an innocent facade. "How could I be that kind of person?"
"Why don’t you take it home and exchange it? You can finish your meal there," she began to urge him out.
However, Jiang Shiyu remained unfazed. He casually wiped his arm with the towel and said, "No need; it's just a little bit."
Yun Li's expression faltered. She grabbed the glass of water she had just filled and said, "I'll get you another cup."
"If one isn’t enough, then I’ll bring you two! I don’t believe you won’t go home completely soaked." She filled another glass to the brim, while Jiang Shiyu watched her back, fully aware of her inner thoughts.
He waited leisurely for her prank.
Yun Li walked over with a full cup, and some droplets slid down her fingers, trickling from her thumb to her palm. Yun Li smiled and said, "Drink up, the water at my place is really good."
