"Why didn't you say it was a hassle when we got into bed?"
Yun Li's calm expression suddenly shattered as she stared at him in shock.
Jiang Shiyu simply gazed deeply at her. "It's my first day here, and I cooked too much. Do you want some?"
Yun Li wanted to refuse, but her stomach betrayed her with a growl, making the air thick with awkwardness.
Jiang Shiyu smiled slightly and stepped out of the room.
Yun Li slowly walked into his home, which was elegantly decorated, reminiscent of the style at Fragrant Courtyard No. 1. The curtains were sky blue, and the sofa was beige.
Jiang Shiyu brought the dishes out from the kitchen. When Yun Li offered to help, he said, "Just sit! I'm afraid you'll blow up my kitchen."
Yun Li thought it was too much trouble to help anyway. She comfortably sat on a chair, waiting for each dish to be served—three dishes and a soup: garlic prawns, cilantro beef, stir-fried baby bok choy, and tofu soup. The tofu soup had an egg in it, making it rich, with a sprinkle of shrimp shells on top. Just looking at it made Yun Li feel hungry.
Jiang Shiyu asked her, "Half a bowl or a full bowl?"
"A full bowl," she replied. "I trained hard today; if I eat too little, I won't have any energy."
Following her request, Jiang Shiyu generously ladled her a full bowl.
As Yun Li ate, she couldn't help but smile lightly; the food was delicious and went well with rice. Eating half of her rice and soaking it in the soup made it even more satisfying.
After finishing her meal, Yun Li took the initiative to wash the dishes. Jiang Shiyu merely glanced at her before setting down his utensils while she happily tidied up.
Jiang Shiyu leaned against the kitchen door with his arms crossed, watching her leisurely.
Yun Li turned her head and asked, "What are you doing standing there?"
"Just watching you," he replied playfully. "I'm worried you might ruin my new sink."
Yun Li laughed in exasperation, gritting her teeth as she retorted, "Then you should keep an eye on how I might ruin it!"
Once she finished washing the dishes and dried them thoroughly, she asked with a satisfied smile, "Are you happy now?"
Jiang Shiyu raised an eyebrow, seemingly satisfied. He opened the door to let her out, urging her to take her time. His demeanor suggested that he was reluctant to leave this place himself.
Yun Li didn’t say much and took off her apron as she left. Once home, she took a shower and lay on the sofa, gently rubbing her round belly, unable to resist the cravings that had been nagging at her. She had pulled Jiang Shiyu out of that dark place.
"Are you living here for me?" she wondered silently.
Jiang Shiyu stood on the balcony and glanced in her direction. "No, it’s close to the research institute."
Yun Li wasn’t convinced. She checked the location of the research institute and found it was indeed just a five-minute walk away. The Xiangyuan No. 1 Center was a bit far from the city center; even by car, it took over half an hour. In that light, living here was certainly convenient. But why did it have to be right next door to her?
Just as Yun Li prepared to question Jiang Shiyu again, another message came through.
"This neighborhood isn’t bad; your neighbor's place is better than the others."
Yun Li didn’t understand much about these things, nor did she know how the other houses in the same community compared. But she sensed that his intentions were not simple. Last time, she had fallen for his temptation. Once was enough.
For several consecutive days after work, she could smell that enticing aroma wafting from his apartment, and it seemed like every time she stepped outside, she would coincidentally run into him taking out the trash.
He had extended an invitation once, but Yun Li had turned him down.
Shu Ran was accompanying Cheng Zhou on a business trip to America, leaving Yun Li to order takeout by herself. When the delivery arrived, she opened the door and caught another whiff of that delicious scent. She quickly closed the balcony door and opened her takeout, staring at the unappetizing black dishes inside.
Having finished all the dumplings her mother had packed for her, she sent a message to Deng Ting: "Mom, can you send me some dumplings? Pretty please?"
"Heaven will pack them up and send them to you," came the reply.
Yun Li felt tears welling up with gratitude. "Thank you, Mommy."
Yun Li found herself unable to finish her takeout. She opened the balcony again, and the aroma wafted in, making her stomach rumble.
After a moment of hesitation, she picked up her phone. It wouldn’t be too embarrassing to ask for a meal, right? She decided to go for it and typed, "Hey, your cooking is pretty good."
It took a minute for the reply to come through: "I know."
Yun Li rolled her eyes, feeling a mix of annoyance and amusement. She continued typing, "Are you used to eating alone?"
Jiang Shiyu replied, "Pretty used to it."
Yun Li curled her fingers, biting her fingertip in frustration. She abandoned the idea of negotiating.
Old Fox might be hiding in a corner, chuckling at her predicament.
Meanwhile, Jiang Shiyu sat at the dining table, his food growing cold in front of him. He popped it into the microwave to reheat it. By the time everything was warm again, Yun Li still hadn’t responded.
Feeling a bit too proud, she decided to give herself an out. "Typo! I meant not used to it."
From her slouched position on the sofa, Yun Li heard her phone ping. When she opened it, a grin spread across her face.
"Then I’ll reluctantly keep you company while you eat! But I won’t eat; I can wash the dishes instead."
Jiang Shiyu chuckled softly, already picturing her saying that with a proud expression.
"Sounds good."
Yun Li didn’t even realize she had fallen into some trap set by Old Fox and felt quite pleased with herself for getting such a good deal.
