"Who would carry three of them around?"
Jiang Shiyu laughed, wanting to kiss her, but she dodged away. After all this time, didn't he understand the concept of mutual needs?
Jiang Shiyu's smile faded in an instant, his deep gaze fixed on her.
Yun Li felt overwhelmed by such a look. She turned her back to him and said, "How about you just consider what happened earlier as an accident? It's not like it was a bad thing."
Jiang Shiyu remained silent, getting up. Behind him, there was a rustling sound as the door opened and then closed again.
About five minutes later, Yun Li finally got up to take a shower.
A passionate night had left Yun Li feeling refreshed, and her sleep had improved significantly. The next morning, she woke up early, stretched a bit, and looked out at the beautiful scenery. She put on her torn clothes and sneaked back to her room, trying not to be seen.
At noon, the three of them sat in the restaurant for lunch. Seeing that Jiang Shiyu hadn't arrived yet, Shu asked Zhou, "Did he go back to the launch center again?"
Zhou thought Shu might have some issues with his intelligence. Who sends someone on a business trip after such a big event?
Shu opened his mouth and after two seconds of realization, he cursed, "Old Fox."
So he fled in defeat?
Zhou shrugged, "Who knows?" He glanced at Yun Li with a probing look, then smirked slightly.
Yun Li didn't stay long in Haicheng before returning to Jiangzhou to visit her parents. She was lying on the sofa at home, eating cherries while watching a show when her phone rang with an unfamiliar number—Jiangzhou's area code. She answered it.
As soon as she picked up, something said on the other end made her stop chewing the cherries and immediately rush out.
She hurried to the Jiangzhou pet hospital.
Outside the surgery room on the second floor, Jiang Ci was waiting there. He had grown up now, turning into a fifteen-year-old boy, though he still retained some features from when he was four.
"Yun Li," he called out, "the director is inside."
Yun Li didn't recognize Jiang Ci at first; she rushed inside without thinking.
In the operating room, Jiang Ze stood beside Jiang Shiyu, patting his shoulder. Jiang Shiyu bent over, his eyes red as he looked at the Director. The Director lay on the operating table, gasping for breath, yet he still smiled at Jiang Shiyu.
The doctor beside them said, "Mr. Jiang, it's already a miracle that the Samoyed has lived to seventeen. The Director has suffered from heart disease for a long time, and now his heart can no longer bear it. The best way is to let him go peacefully."
Yun Li's heart sank at those words; she covered her mouth as she looked at the Director on the table. It seemed he sensed something, turning his head with great effort to look in Yun Li's direction.
Jiang Shiyu turned around; stubble covered his chin, and his eyes were tired and bloodshot. The Director let out a soft grunt. Yun Li walked over to him, her eyes stinging with tears.
"What's wrong, Director?" Her voice trembled involuntarily.
Jiang Ci sniffed, his voice no longer soft and sweet as it used to be: "Director Ji Tai is getting old; with his heart condition, he can hardly breathe normally anymore."
Yun Li stood frozen in place, her hand gently stroking the Director's head. He seemed happy, sticking out his tongue to lick her palm.
This was the first time he had licked her hand like that, and it made her smile even wider, just like before. Tears fell as he licked her; their time together was running out, but every day he spent by her side had brought her joy.
He would wait for her at the door when she got home from work; he would help tidy up when she was cleaning the house. When she took him for walks, he would check if she could keep up before deciding whether to run or not. He would silently accompany her when she was feeling down and even perform tricks to cheer her up.
Memories of their time together flooded her mind as Yun Li bent down to embrace him. The Director's eyes were also filled with tears; he didn't want to leave his parents or his grandfather and brother behind.
He loved Yun Li's hugs; this was the first time she had held him like this.
Jiang Shiyu's voice was hoarse and filled with immense pain as he said, "Let him go! It’s better to end his suffering in such a gentle way."
Yun Li looked at Jiang Shiyu; she understood how difficult this decision was for him.
Jiang Shiyu held its paw and smiled, the first time he had looked at it with such tenderness. Usually, he would command it with a cold arrogance, expecting it to embody the fierce demeanor of a large dog. Even when he smiled, it was always casual, never like this.
He had heard that dogs have their next lives. If there is a next life, remember this face and come find me. Greet me with that silly smile as if it were the first time we met, and I will take you home, letting you continue to be the leader of the police dogs.
How about that?
The dog seemed to understand, staring intently at Jiang Shiyu without blinking. The liquid in the syringe was slowly pushed in, drop by drop, and the dog's breathing grew weaker until it finally ceased altogether.
At that moment, Jiang Shiyu stopped smiling. He lowered his head, resting his forehead against the dog's paw. When he lifted his head again, there were no tears; his eyes were just red as he stroked the dog's head and said, "I should have found you a mate long ago. That way, before I found you again, I would have had your children to keep me company."
In his lonely days, it was the dog that had kept him company. Now that it was gone, a piece of his soul felt missing.
