He did not appear by Yun's side again during the following time. As the New Year approached, Yun and He Lin Cheng set off for Su City.
In the hotel, Yun received a call from Shu Ran.
"Cheng Zhou just proposed to me!"
Yun's mouth dropped open in surprise as she sat up in bed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Wow, a proposal? That's so thrilling! Did you say yes?"
Shu Ran shrugged. "No, he didn't propose the way I wanted. I wanted all our friends and family there to witness it, but he felt embarrassed and chose to propose on Yan Lun instead."
"I can't believe it! It's freezing in Jing City at the end of December, and he proposed on Yan Lun? What was he thinking?"
"And I was in my pajamas when he pulled out the ring! Do you know how I felt at that moment?"
"You were right not to say yes; who proposes in pajamas?"
Shu Ran nodded as if she had found a kindred spirit. "Exactly! Isn't he just clueless?"
"I'm really not happy about this. I need to talk to you."
Seeing that she was in the car, Yun asked, "You’re not here yet, are you?"
Shu Ran snapped her fingers playfully. "Nope! I'm almost at the hotel; come pick up your treasure!"
Yun chuckled helplessly as she threw off the covers and got out of bed to find her shoes. She arrived shortly after.
The two of them lay on the bed together. Shu Ran glanced at Yun gently; she had only recently learned about this and wasn't sure whether to tell Yun everything.
With her eyes closed, Yun felt the girl beside her moving around restlessly, rolling like a spring roll.
"What's wrong? Are you still mad? Don't be upset; if you're still angry, just call him and yell at him. You usually vent like that, right?"
"No," Shu Ran's voice was very soft. Sensing her turmoil, Yun opened her eyes and turned on the bedside lamp.
"Do you have something to say?"
Shu Ran opened her mouth in confusion. "Huh? No!"
Yun knew better than that; there was definitely something on her mind. She adjusted her position against the pillow and said, "Come on! I know you can't hold it in."
Shu Ran sat up too, carefully studying Yun's expression. "Are you sure you want to hear about him?"
Yun was momentarily taken aback; she hadn’t expected that what Shu Ran wanted to say was about him. She maintained her usual calm demeanor, wondering if he had been living too well, making him so preoccupied with this.
At that moment, Shu Ran's expression was no longer the cheerful one she was used to; it was complex and serious. Yun understood and said, "I know what you want to say."
"Huh?"
Yun gazed into the dimness ahead. When I realized the truth, it was indeed painful and difficult. After so many years, the doubts that had lingered were finally resolved, yet I found it hard to face him calmly. His concealment and deception told me that I was not someone he could trust or confide in. "Ran Ran, do you know? I actually understood from the beginning that he had his reasons."
I had heard you mention things about the wealthy circles before and knew a little about them. His father wasn’t anyone significant, and their relationship was complicated—one could say it was quite troubled, which led me to guess what was happening back then.
But what could I do? My power felt so weak. I feared that one wrong step would disrupt his rhythm. I had prepared myself to face things together with him; I wasn't afraid of taking risks. Embracing challenges was my strength, and I believed we could carve out a path together.
However, he chose to hide the truth, which made me begin to doubt myself. I questioned whether my feelings had been misplaced and whether I wasn’t enough—whether I hadn’t worked hard enough for him to feel that I deserved to stand by his side in battle.
