In the morning, Yun Li took her car keys and headed to work. As she exited the apartment building, her footsteps paused. Jiang Shiyu had changed into a black coat, his tall figure somewhat slumped, looking weary with stubble on his chin that hadn’t been shaved. He emanated a cold aura.
A thought began to sprout in her mind: had he been waiting here all night? Jiang Shiyu shifted his feet and took a couple of steps forward, his eyes clouded with something unspoken. Holding a bag of breakfast, still warm from being freshly bought, he spoke in a hoarse voice tinged with nasal congestion, “I happened to get you something while passing by.”
Yun Li, dressed in an olive green short coat and carrying a black leather bag, glanced at the McDonald's packaging in his hand before stepping around him without a word. Jiang Shiyu followed her, watching as she got into her car.
Once inside, he opened the bag and took a lonely bite of the warm sausage and egg muffin. A few strands of hair fell from his slicked-back hairstyle as he continued to eat in silence.
After finishing at the theater, Yun Li changed her clothes and went to Wu Fang. She followed Teacher Wei and meticulously practiced the movements again. He Lin Cheng waited outside, and when the two took a break, he entered with two cups of milk tea in hand.
“Teacher Wei, you’ve worked hard. Have some milk tea,” he said. Teacher Wei’s eyes lit up as he approached with a smile, “You came just to check on me, didn’t you?”
He Lin Cheng chuckled and handed Yun Li the matcha milk: “Zero sugar.”
Yun Li wiped the sweat from her forehead and thanked him, “Thank you! Aren’t you going to supervise their practice?”
“I let them practice on their own for a bit; I’ll check on them later,” he replied.
Teacher Wei took a big sip of his milk tea and chewed on some tapioca pearls before mumbling, “You two aren’t kids anymore; when are you planning to get together?”
The atmosphere suddenly turned quiet. He Lin Cheng was the first to break the silence: “Teacher Wei, aren’t you thinking about finding someone else? You’re not that young anymore.”
Teacher Wei playfully punched him in the chest: “I just said one thing, and you’re already pushing me!”
After lunch, the two practiced for the New Year’s Eve gala. Rehearsals always brought about amusing moments; He Lin Cheng turned around but stumbled when he lost his footing, causing Yun Li and the instructor to burst into laughter together.
After work, they both headed out together. Yun Li got into her car and drove home.
She received Shu Ran's call. "Hao Hao, I ordered the delivery, remember to pick it up."
"Oh, okay. What did you buy?"
"Luo Si Fen. We're having Snail Noodle Hot Pot for dinner!"
"Snail Noodle Hot Pot is a good choice, but it's too fatty. No, the calories are too high; I might as well have a bowl of rice."
"Then I'll have Luo Si Fen. I still have some rice left from yesterday; I'll make you some fried rice!"
"Sure, but I also want a fried egg on the side," she requested.
"Alright."
Yun Li parked the car and prepared to pick up the delivery. The package was inside the community, just a few minutes away.
She didn't expect Jiang Shiyu to still be there. Ignoring him, Yun Li headed straight for the delivery station.
Yun Li picked up a box of Luo Si Fen and another box of toilet paper. The two large boxes were quite heavy.
As she tilted her head to carry them outside, one of the boxes slipped from her grip and was caught by someone else.
Yun Li watched his retreating figure in silence and followed him. At the entrance of her building, she said, "Give it to me! Thank you."
Jiang Shiyu walked past her and took the boxes upstairs.
Not wanting to engage in conversation, at her door, Yun Li opened it and said, "That's enough; just put it down!"
Jiang Shiyu set the boxes down and looked at her. "If you're in a hurry to get married, you might consider me."
Yun Li was puzzled and shocked. Where did he hear such nonsense?
"Since we're talking about settling, why not settle with me? What do you think?" His voice was still hoarse, and he coughed a couple of times after speaking.
He turned his head away, his fist pressed against his lips, frowning slightly as if he were in discomfort.
"This isn't settling," Yun Li replied calmly, her gaze still clear and pure. "I've already decided to accept Senior He. You should let go now."
After saying that, Yun Li ignored him, picked up the boxes, and went inside, using her foot to close the door behind her.
The sound echoed in the hallway as the door slammed shut. The lingering sound faded away as the lights in the building gradually went out, plunging it into darkness. That tall figure stood there, blending into the shadows.
Jiang Shiyu's deep-set eyes lowered as life seemed to drain from him. He stood there for a long time until the elevator opened again. A neighbor looked at him strangely while ushering their child quickly into their home.
Jiang Shiyu pressed the button for the elevator and descended.
When he reached the ground floor, he ran into Shu Ran, who frowned and looked displeased at the sight of him. "What are you doing here?"
Jiang Shiyu remained silent, moving forward like a robot devoid of emotion.
"Stop!" Shu Ran called out, blocking his path. She took a moment to suppress her anger before continuing, "Can you please stop hurting her? She's doing better in both her life and work now. This shows that she can thrive without you. Every time you show up, you bring her unhappiness."
"You have no ability to give her happiness, so please don’t come back to ruin her life. I’m begging you; let it go."
Both of them were stubborn fools.
Jiang Shiyu seemed to take her words to heart and replied in a low voice, "Okay."
Seeing him relent, Shu Ran felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She quickly headed upstairs to check on Yun Li.
Upon opening the door, she found Yun Li humming a tune while washing vegetables.
"You're back? I thawed the beef for you to cut; I've already washed the vegetables."
"What are you washing vegetables for?" Shu Ran asked.
Yun Li replied, "Didn’t we say we were having Snail Noodle Hot Pot?"
Shu Ran wanted to say something but held back the words in her throat. She rolled up her sleeves and entered the kitchen. "Do you want sliced meat or strips?"
