At thirteen, Jiang Shiyu watched as Yun Li was surrounded by her parents, taken back home. He stood there in a daze for a long time. When his grandfather found him, the first thing he asked was, "Grandpa, will I have a happy family too?"
That encounter had planted a seed in his heart. He was someone who treated everyone with indifference, cold and arrogant, with no close friends. Yet that day, unexpectedly, he opened up to her and let down his guard—perhaps it was the atmosphere that encouraged such vulnerability. The night often exposed one's fragility.
Her eyes were red from crying, but when she smiled, it was healing; her eyes curved beautifully, always sparkling with joy. It was soothing, making him unable to resist looking at her multiple times. He thought how wonderful it would be to experience maternal love—a longing he had never felt before.
His grandfather felt heartbroken and hugged him tightly, tears welling in his eyes. "Of course you will have that. From now on, stay by my side; I will protect you."
The injury on his head was caused by Jiang Hao throwing a teacup at him. After learning about it, Jiang Zesheng expelled Jiang Hao and sent someone to find Jiang Shiyu. When they finally located him, Jiang Zesheng sighed in relief, but he was startled when the child suddenly expressed such thoughts.
He hired a psychologist to help guide him and gradually delegated more of his work to others so he could spend more time with Jiang Shiyu. However, he didn't feel comfortable leaving all company matters to his uncle, so he often attended meetings and went on business trips, hiring a nanny to take care of Jiang Shiyu at home.
He accompanied him for meals, fearing that he might feel lonely. By then, Jiang Shiyu's personality had already formed—cold, proud, strong-willed, and somewhat ruthless. To help him heal, Jiang Zesheng bought a dog.
A Samoyed was his first choice—cute and clumsy, smiling like an angel. But Jiang Shiyu found it distasteful; he preferred dogs that were imposing and intelligent. On the first day the dog arrived at their home, he tossed it outside to fend for itself. It was the household servant who brought it back.
Little Guy might truly be silly; it thought its little master was playing with it and rubbed its dirty body against Jiang Shiyu. Disgusted, Jiang Shiyu ordered the servant to confine it.
Little Guy protested with sharp cries, unwilling to be locked away. Looking at its fluffy little face reminded Jiang Shiyu of Yun Li being showered with love. Was this dog so foolish because its parents loved it dearly and spoiled it?
Feeling soft-hearted, he took Little Guy for a bath. The dog hated bathing and splashed water everywhere, soaking Jiang Shiyu in the process as he frowned and forced it to get clean.
Afterward, panting slightly from exhaustion, he said, "You're nothing like her; she's always clean." He added sternly, "You're dirty; you’re not allowed in my room."
At that time, Little Guy didn’t understand his words and continued barking excitedly. Frustrated, Jiang Shiyu muttered under his breath, "Silly Dog," before kicking it out.
That day he saw her again; she seemed genuinely interested in being friends. Jiang Shiyu pretended not to notice her but felt a significant sense of disparity inside him. This feeling of inferiority made him unable to hold his head high in front of her; his usual prideful self disliked this sensation.
He decided it was best not to interact with her anymore. Afterward, when they didn’t meet again, there was a slight sense of loss within him but also relief—what right did she have to associate with someone like him? He spent all day idling around like a delinquent.
He didn’t want to lead her astray; however, after that moment, he threw himself into studying even harder. He was intelligent and grasped concepts quickly. He could easily pass exams without much effort; in subjects like mathematics and science, he scored full marks. Once he adjusted his attitude toward learning, he excelled in all subjects except language arts where he still managed good scores.
His teachers no longer complained about headaches; they smiled every day while he skipped classes without concern since his grades were excellent.
He gradually accepted the Director, finding comfort in her smile, which was just as healing as his own. He liked this kind of smile.
He took the Director to the training grounds, knowing that even though his dog appeared silly and cute, its physical and mental qualities needed to keep up. At first, the Director was reluctant, but when she saw Jiang Shiyu looking at the Military Dog with admiration, she became angry.
Jiang Shiyu patted the dog's head and lifted his chin. "Do you see that? The most impressive Military Dog here is the captain." No matter how big the captain was, he had to listen to the Director. "Take it down; from now on, this name will be yours."
The dog seemed to understand and immediately bared its teeth, ready for action.
Day after day of training led to the Director truly surpassing even the most formidable Military Dogs, bringing them under her command as their leader. Perhaps influenced by Jiang Shiyu, in front of all the Military Dogs, Manager Shi appeared cold and proud, strutting with her head held high as she inspected her little brothers.
The sight was somewhat amusing, and many officers admired and praised the Director as an extraordinary and impressive Samoyed. What was already cute had now become a beloved pet.
Smart and personable, with physical qualities far exceeding those of the Military Dogs, this was merely the result of two training sessions. An impressive outcome indeed.
Yun Li gradually became a cherished memory in his heart—something he had never thought he would possess. Until one day, while accompanying Qin Nianzhe to Jing Wu, he unexpectedly encountered her again and recognized her at first glance.
His feelings were complex at that moment, but he had no intention of acknowledging her. However, as their paths crossed more frequently, he watched her competition video for the first time and was instantly captivated.
She had become even more outstanding; she no longer cried over fears of not getting into Affiliated High School. On stage, she moved effortlessly, skillfully expressing her emotions while having a clear plan for her career and diligently working toward her goals.
Jiang Shiyu admired her greatly.
When Fang Yang suggested playing that boring game, he didn’t want to participate but felt a vague anticipation inside him. He didn’t want anyone else to touch him; none of those people were clean. Even if it were a girl, he didn’t want her to be tainted.
Thus, he misinterpreted this clumsy excuse and spoke nonsense. His gaze unconsciously fell upon her; she continued to smile warmly, intensifying his desire to see her smile forever. Yet when she smiled at others, it always made him feel uneasy.
Realizing that his feelings for her were no longer simple left him frustrated and somewhat lost. He felt unworthy of her.
So when Qin Nianzhe rambled on carelessly, he couldn’t help but feel nervous; he feared Yun Li would discover how inadequate he truly was. He didn’t care what others said about him; he just didn’t want Yun Li to label him as someone unfaithful or a playboy.
But she seemed a bit afraid of him and didn’t appear eager to get closer. In a way, this was for the best. Still troubled, Jiang Shiyu felt a contradiction within himself for the first time.
On his way home during the holiday break, he didn’t expect to run into her at the High-Speed Rail Station. Her reaction was adorable; she became nervous in a way that made him want to tease her.
However, she seemed a bit silly—wherever he went, she followed without fear of being left behind. He noticed her secretly taking pictures of him; that moment filled him with both surprise and anxiety.
He could have acted as if nothing happened but still found himself wanting to draw closer to her.
He was truly enchanted.
She said she wanted to take him to explore all the delightful little shops in Wugu District. He should have refused, but he couldn't help but feel excited, so he accepted. He thought it was perfectly normal for friends to enjoy a meal and have some fun together.
Jiang Shiyu reassured himself with this thought.
When he saw her father again, he felt a bit nervous, even unaware that he wanted to make a good impression in front of him. Jiang Shiyu wasn't someone who liked to chat much, yet throughout their journey, he found himself talking non-stop with Yun Li's Dad. It didn't bother him; in fact, it felt quite relaxing.
It was comforting.
Watching her playfully act cute made him happy; he loved seeing her like that. Everything about her seemed beautiful, and he cherished beauty. He thought their connection couldn't have ended; otherwise, they wouldn't have run into each other again at the amusement park. If either of them had been even a day late or early, they wouldn't have met at all. Yet, here they were.
But there was a boy standing next to her, and it made him feel uneasy.
Jiang Shiyu was used to being assertive and taking what he wanted without hesitation, which is why he had confidently approached Jiao Jiao Ci that time. It worked out well.
During their time together, he realized they were just good friends—nothing more. When she called Jiao Jiao Ci "baby," his heart skipped a beat; her voice was truly enchanting, and inside, he felt a whirlwind of emotions.
Seeing Jiao Jiao Ci enjoying her meal so much suddenly made him feel that his own eating habits were a bit dull; it would be better if things were more lively. He regretted it; perhaps being more obedient would be wise. He suspected Jiao Jiao Ci was doing it on purpose—who couldn't hold someone well? Why did she have to lean into her embrace?
The previously harmonious atmosphere shifted when Jiang Shiyu entered the bar.
When they playfully asked him about his girlfriend, it felt as if something had yanked him back into a pit of despair. In that moment, he realized no matter how much he changed, he would never be worthy of her. No matter how well they had gotten along before, she still didn't belong to him; he remained that flawed person.
Just moments ago, he had been lost in bliss without realizing it, but now that he had pulled back, an icy sensation coursed through him, making everything painfully clear.
That was why he agreed to the confessions from others; he wanted to end things this way.
