"Oh my, I finally get to meet you in person." The man stepped closer, his gaze fixed on Yun Li, a broad smile spreading across his face as he extended his hand. "Hello, hello, I'm Jiang Yuan."
Yun Li glanced at his outstretched hand and shook it. "Hello."
"Have you reconciled with my brother? Where is he?"
It was clear he was aware of their previous relationship. Yun Li explained, "We haven't reconciled. I don't even know where he is."
Jiang Yuan nodded and noticed the bracelet on her wrist. Suddenly, he pointed at it and said, "I remember that bracelet."
Yun Li looked down at the bracelet.
Jiang Yuan chattered on, "My brother has worn that bracelet since I can remember. He never let anyone touch it; it was like a treasured possession. After he got shot, it just disappeared."
"To find something so chaotic is impressive," Jiang Yuan said with admiration, clearly fond of Jiang Shiyu.
"No wonder it's so worn out."
"Since he doesn't have it, I should leave," Yun Li said, preparing to walk away while placing the bracelet back in her pocket.
Jiang Yuan immediately blocked her path. "Hey, hey, hey! Don’t you want to know how he found it?"
Yun Li seemed to be waiting for him to continue. "Go on."
Jiang Yuan appeared slightly flustered by her calm demeanor. "After my brother was shot, he was unconscious for over a month. The first thing he did when he woke up was look for this bracelet. We all went to the scene of the incident to search for it but found nothing."
"Then he left the hospital to look for it himself. Our mother was really scared; she kept watching him search and wouldn’t let anyone else help, saying it would kill him. What good is a bracelet if his life is at stake?"
"In the end, he found it in the grass by the roadside. At that time, the big beads were broken and the string was snapped."
"He didn’t even change the string; he just repaired it like that. But wearing it is impossible now since it's too short."
Yun Li's eyes were filled with shock, her expression becoming somewhat dazed.
At that moment, Jiang Shiyu's voice came from behind them.
Jiang Shiyu entered and saw Yun Li listening to Jiang Yuan talk about something. He fixed his gaze on Jiang Yuan. "You go out first; come back in a bit."
Jiang Yuan nodded obediently. "Oh."
He walked slowly away while Yun Li turned to him. "You haven't finished your story."
Feeling Jiang Shiyu's icy stare upon him, Jiang Yuan suddenly felt a bit shaky on his feet.
Yun Li looked at Jiang Shiyu and asked, "Do you have something to say to me?"
Jiang Shiyu stared back at Yun Li, biting his lip. The two of them locked eyes, while Jiang Yuan felt a bit lost. Should he stay or should he go?
He remained silent, and Yun Li turned to Jiang Yuan. "Can you tell me what you know?"
Jiang Yuan glanced at Jiang Shiyu, clearly hesitant to share, but his feet slowly shuffled toward Yun Li. "Um, my brother used to sneak away to see you when he was in America."
As he spoke, Jiang Yuan had already moved beside Yun Li. "I know that," Yun Li replied firmly.
Jiang Yuan hid behind Yun Li and added, "He even got a tattoo—a cloud—on his chest."
Jiang Shiyu's eyes darkened dangerously, causing Jiang Yuan to panic and rush out. "Sister, I really want to tell you more, but he'll kill me!"
The door slammed shut behind him. The director also took the hint and retreated into another room.
Suddenly, it was just the two of them left.
Yun Li suppressed her emotions and asked, "Where have you been?"
Jiang Shiyu stubbornly replied, "Outside."
Seeing that he wouldn't tell her the truth made Yun Li feel truly heartbroken. He wouldn't share anything with her or discuss anything together. So self-righteous. After a long pause, Yun Li bit her lip and spoke through trembling hands.
"Why did I end up here with you after taking photos with my senior?"
"I bought them from your classmate," he replied.
Yun Li scoffed coldly; he could say that much, but when it came to other matters, it was as if his throat had been poisoned and he couldn't speak.
"I'm giving you one last chance. Is there anything else you're hiding from me?"
Jiang Shiyu seemed deflated; his shoulders slumped as he closed his eyes and spoke in a hoarse voice. "I went to the hospital to check your medical records."
"I'm sorry for keeping this from you for so many years."
"What good is 'sorry' now? So much has happened and you never told me—what place do I hold in your heart?"
"How do you know I wouldn't share the burden with you? Even if you used me as a threat, you should have told me instead of hiding it!" Yun Li shouted through tears.
She needed an outlet, feeling utterly overwhelmed and in pain. Jiang Shiyu looked up, his eyes widening in surprise as he stared at her. "Who told you?" His voice was hoarse and low.
Yun Li wiped her tears and, when Jiang Shiyu reached out to wipe them away, she instinctively recoiled. "Do you know? I've been waiting for you to tell me in person. I knew nine years ago that you had your reasons."
"I know your parents would never approve of us. I know you don't like Shang Beibei. I know you were forced to be with her. I know everything. I've been waiting for you to say it out loud."
She understood him well; she could see that he was trapped by circumstances. The series of events that had unfolded made her aware of the situation. Her father’s leg, the car accident—it all seemed meticulously orchestrated to leave no trace behind. She knew about the Cheng Zhou Family and their position in high society; she had heard of the power struggles among wealthy families, but she never imagined it would happen to her.
She realized there was nothing she could do; she lacked the ability to change things and would only complicate matters for him. So she pretended as if nothing had happened, preparing herself to fight alongside him, only to find that he had abandoned her.
"I waited for a long time. Time passed slowly, and before I knew it, a whole year had gone by." Her voice trembled as tears streamed down her face. "I was so disappointed in you that I chose to forget you with someone else."
All the grievances she had endured over the years poured out. "I was about to give up on you when you suddenly appeared again. It’s quite laughable."
Jiang Shiyu reached out, wanting to hold her close. His eyes were filled with sorrow and pain, and he couldn't help but redden at the corners. The girl before him was trembling, tears falling in large drops; her expression was one of complete breakdown. She felt not just disappointment but a deep ache in her heart.
The pain felt as if her very insides were shattering.
Yun Li pushed him away, but Jiang Shiyu stepped forward again, wrapping her in his arms. Her palm pressed against his cold tactical jacket, her left hand resting on his chest—where a bullet had once struck.
Suddenly, all her strength seemed to drain away.
