Yun Li entered Dr. Meng's consultation room, pushing the door open to find him bent over, organizing papers. The floor was strewn with numerous medical records, and as Dr. Meng turned around in surprise, he immediately recognized Yun Li.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to alter your medical records. After all these years of knowing each other, could you please say a few words to Mr. Jiang on my behalf so he won't report me? I truly regret it; I promise I won't change anything again."
"I was forced into this situation," he continued, panic evident on his face, beads of sweat forming as his complexion turned pale. "My daughter needs money, and that's why I agreed to manager Shi's demands. I only altered the medical records; nothing else has been touched. Yun Li, please believe me."
Yun Li was confused by his frantic words. She understood now that her own medical records had been tampered with and that Jiang Shiyu had discovered this. The document he held earlier was indeed her real medical history.
Taking advantage of the moment, Yun Li pressed for the full story behind the situation. She left the hospital feeling lost and overwhelmed by the revelations she had uncovered. Her mind was a jumble of thoughts as she sat in her car, resting her head against the steering wheel, trying to piece everything together.
"After you came to the hospital for treatment, manager Shi approached me," she recalled. "He said if a man named Jiang Shiyu came looking for your records, I should give him a fake one and downplay your symptoms. At that time, I thought it was just a matter of softening the diagnosis and not changing medications. I desperately needed a large sum of money to save my daughter, so I agreed."
Yun Li felt a surge of anger. "Why did you have to do this?"
"Manager Shi didn't explain; he just insisted that I follow his orders," Dr. Meng replied, remorse filling his voice. "I truly didn't prescribe anything harmful to you; everything was done according to standard treatment protocols."
"How many times did you falsify my records?" she demanded.
"Just twice," he admitted. "Once when you first came in for treatment and again three months later during your follow-up visit. I only modified the details to make your condition appear less severe; nothing else was altered."
Yun Li felt as if she were trapped in a fog, having wandered through it for many years without realizing her predicament. Despite living all this time, she still felt lost and yearned for the truth—an unvarnished truth without any concealment.
Starting her car, she drove toward Xiangyuan No. 1.
Upon arriving at the Nineteenth Floor and staring at the familiar entrance, she felt a chill run through her fingertips as she took a deep breath, battling her inner turmoil before inputting her fingerprint.
In an instant, a mechanical voice announced access granted, and the door swung open.
Momentarily stunned, she quickly regained her composure and pushed the door open to find the director seated not far away. Upon seeing Yun Li, his smile widened even more as he jumped up excitedly, barking out, "Mommy's here!"
The Director jumped up and down in place for a moment before coming over and circling around Yun Li's feet.
Yun Li gently patted its head and asked, "Is your dad home?" The Director barked softly, indicating he was not. She took off her shoes, setting them aside next to a pair of pink slippers from before. After biting her lip, she slipped them on and glanced around.
As she moved further inside, the sofa was still the same as before, and the television remained unchanged. The decor hadn’t altered; it was clean and tidy. On the sofa lay a few plush toys that she had bought and left there.
Turning her head, she noticed a bottle of Jing Ping on the bar counter. It was empty, but she recognized it as one she had purchased long ago. Approaching it, she realized something was off. The Jing Ping bottle was shattered, with a long crack running down its side that had been repaired. There was also a small chip at the top.
The fridge magnets were still in place, and Yun Li stared at them in a daze. Slowly making her way to the balcony, she saw that the succulent had grown large; someone had changed its pot and even added a stand for it. The Green Radish and hanging orchids were also there, neatly arranged.
She stood there, lost in thought, gazing at everything in front of her. Meanwhile, the Director tugged at her pant leg with its mouth, trying to pull her inside.
Looking down at it, Yun Li noticed how the Director was pulling her toward the door of Wu Fang's room. It didn’t go in but kept whimpering as if wanting to say something.
Yun Li stepped inside; nothing had changed in Wu Fang's room—all the items were still there, and the mirror showed no dust, looking as if it had been regularly cleaned.
The Director entered and went straight to the thick mat, placing its paws on it while whimpering. If it could talk, Yun Li imagined it would have so much to say. She walked over and patted its head gently. "Let him speak for himself!"
"I can't understand what you're saying," she added softly. The Director stopped whimpering as if acknowledging her words.
Then it tugged at her pant leg again, leading her toward the bedroom. Yun Li hesitated; she felt it wasn’t appropriate to go into someone else's bedroom. "Director," she said, "I know you want to tell me something, but the bedroom isn’t suitable."
Listening to her, the Director simply released its grip and opened the door itself. A faint sound came from inside, prompting Yun Li to call out, "Director, don’t rummage through things! If you mess up, your dad will get angry."
Moments later, the Director emerged with half a photograph clamped in its mouth.
As for why it was only half a photo, the other half had been cut off. It was missing a section.
Yun Li took it in shock, recognizing it as the picture taken at the scenic spot with senior He. She remembered that her senior had stood beside her. Now, only she remained in the photo, the senior's position cut away.
Time had passed, and she could no longer recall the scene clearly, only that many photos had been taken, and the buildings behind her overlapped with her memories. How did this photo end up here?
The director continued to grip her clothes and pulled her further inside.
Yun Li entered; the bedroom looked just as it always had, except that the drawer of the bedside table had been rummaged through, and some items had fallen out. Her gaze landed on a string of bracelets spread out on the floor.
A black cord with red beads.
She picked it up; one of the red beads was inscribed with Yun Zi's name. The cord was worn down significantly, and there were cracks on the beads, one of which was split diagonally.
Her eyes moved down to see more of her photos scattered around, her emotions growing increasingly complex.
Suddenly, a voice came from outside.
"Brother, I'm here!"
Yun Li and the director stepped out.
At the door stood a man changing his shoes. He looked up and flinched in surprise for a moment. The man was handsome but somewhat slender, wearing glasses and appearing like a refined bookworm.
Yun Li stood across from him while the director sat beside her. As the man processed what he saw, his eyes widened in disbelief and then surprise. "You are Yun Li?"
