Yun Li left in a daze, sitting in the car with swollen eyes and a red nose, staring blankly out the window. She felt lost and didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t until night fell and the headlights of cars illuminated the road that she finally started the engine and drove home. The cost of being together was too great; it was better this way.
November had begun to turn cold. Yun Li wore a fitted purple long-sleeve dance outfit paired with loose beige dance pants as she practiced at Wu Fang. He Lin Cheng approached her, saying, "Yun Li, the Team Leader wants us both in her office."
Yun Li looked up and replied, "Oh, okay," as she swung her legs down from the barre. She put on her jacket and headed to the office with He Lin Cheng. Inside, the Team Leader was entertaining someone, and as they entered, she began the introductions.
"Lin Cheng, this is Director Zhang from Su City TV." The man was in his forties, with long hair tied back in a low ponytail. The three shook hands.
"They are our theater's most outstanding dancers," the Team Leader said.
"I recognize them," Director Zhang replied. "I watched them perform on a show before; that’s why I came here."
"We at Su City TV would like to invite you both to participate in a gala two months from now. We need you to choreograph a duet." He continued, "The song should be upbeat, and we will handle the copyright for it, so feel free to choose boldly. The dance should be grand and beautiful; this will help promote our traditional arts culture."
The conversation lasted nearly an hour before wrapping up. Afterwards, the three held a separate meeting to discuss the gala program. They finally settled on a song but needed to find a teacher to help choreograph the dance.
Yun Li became busy again, her days filled with rehearsals and meetings. Although she felt tired, it was fulfilling work. With only one day off on weekends, she didn’t want to go out, but her pantry was running low. She decided to head to the supermarket and snack shop for some supplies.
With her hair casually tied in a low ponytail and wearing pajamas under a jacket, she stepped outside. Pushing her cart, she glanced around and found herself wanting to buy everything she saw—especially water. She picked up some bananas and a few apples as well.
She bought three fire dragon fruits and thought to herself that she could use the water as breakfast. In the vegetable section, she picked up some greens, planning to cook noodles at home. The weekend crowd was quite large, and Yun Li pushed her cart through the throngs of people.
After a while, she glanced at a row of shelves in the snack area. She wanted to buy a box of sour plums, but they were placed on the top shelf. She found it a bit ridiculous that they were so high up. Standing on her tiptoes, she gently tried to pry the box from the edge.
Suddenly, another hand appeared above her—one that looked somewhat familiar and was much larger than hers. The knuckles were well-defined and attractive. It was only then that she realized someone was standing behind her; that person had already taken a step back. Turning around, she saw Jiang Shiyu tossing a box of sour plums into her cart before walking away with his hands in his pockets, looking indifferent.
Yun Li was puzzled. What was he doing here? Following me? She looked at the dried sour plums in her cart but didn’t dwell on it as she made her way toward the checkout counter.
After paying and carrying her bags toward the snack store, she noticed that it was quite a distance away. At first, the items in her hands didn’t feel heavy, but after walking for a while, they began to weigh down on her significantly. She switched hands to carry the bags, noticing red marks forming on her fingers from the pressure.
Suddenly, someone lifted the bags from her hands. Yun Li turned to see Jiang Shiyu again, who jiggled the items in his grasp and said, “Let’s go!”
Yun Li reached out for them but replied, “No, I can carry them myself.”
Jiang Shiyu effortlessly switched to another hand without acknowledging her and continued walking ahead. Yun Li found him hard to understand.
Upon arriving at the snack store, Yun Li grabbed a small cart and immediately tossed in anything she liked. When she reached the instant food section, she decisively picked up several packs of turkey noodles, Luosifen, rich rice noodles, instant noodles, and more. Jiang Shiyu took each item out one by one and placed them aside.
Yun Li frowned at him. "Can you stop causing trouble? If you want to be a tool, then just be one. Don't interfere."
Jiang Shiyu remained silent as he continued to place the items down. Yun Li pushed the cart and accidentally bumped into him, hitting a sensitive spot. His expression, which had been cold just moments ago, changed instantly. He bent over, looking at her. "Was that on purpose?"
Yun Li hadn't expected it to be so coincidental. She quickly waved her hands. "No, I didn't mean to! Who told you to mess around here?"
She hurriedly pulled the cart away from him, but Jiang Shiyu followed closely behind. Yun Li grabbed some bread and spicy strips, glancing back to see him examining the snack packaging.
She swiftly turned into the aisle and headed to the instant food section, grabbing turkey noodles, Luosifen, and self-heating hot pot with precision. Once she had everything, she didn't look back as she pushed the cart forward.
Suddenly, it felt like something was snagged on the cart, making it hard to pull. She turned her head and saw Jiang Shiyu watching her with a slight raise of his eyebrows, his hand gripping the edge of the cart firmly.
Annoyed, Yun Li reached out and pinched the back of his hand hard. Jiang Shiyu still didn't let go, his expression unchanged.
"These are unhealthy," he remarked.
Yun Li released her grip, leaving a red mark on his skin. "I've eaten so much and haven't seen anything unhealthy happen. You're being too nosy."
She forcefully pushed his hand away and continued toward the checkout counter with the cart.
After paying, she headed outside. The items were a bit heavy since she had bought so much, so she turned to look at Jiang Shiyu.
"Isn't free labor right here?"
She beckoned him with her finger, and he obediently stepped over to take the items from her hands.
With her hands feeling lighter, Yun Li stretched her sore arms as they continued toward their neighborhood.
It took them ten minutes to reach the entrance of the community. At just the right moment, Yun Li turned around and extended her hand. "Give it back!"
