"Hey partner, it's easy to develop feelings when you're working together. Since we haven't eaten yet, would you mind joining me?" Deng Ting asked.
Yun Li replied, and He Lin Cheng couldn't help but chuckle at the comment. "Sure!"
Deng Ting sat down next to Yun Li and urged Yun Zheng, "Come on, sit down! Do you really want to eat alone? There’s no extra space for you now." Indeed, the restaurant was packed with diners.
Reluctantly, Yun Zheng took a seat. Deng Ting called over a waiter to order food and asked He Lin Cheng if he had any dietary restrictions.
Outside, a Rolls-Royce parked right in front of the glass wall. The person inside had intended to get out and cause some trouble, but the sudden appearance of Aunt Deng and Uncle Yun disrupted those plans.
Everyone wore bright smiles, and Deng Ting's affection for He Lin Cheng was unmistakable. They seemed like a family of four, occasionally gathering for meals and chatting about everyday life.
Deng Ting clearly favored He Lin Cheng. Watching this scene filled him with loneliness and envy. It was a moment he had longed for years, yet it still hadn’t come to him.
Dressed in black, he sat alone in the car, which was eerily quiet—almost dead silent. The joy and happiness inside were unrelated to him; his heart felt heavy and blocked, making it hard to breathe. He calmly observed the scene until he saw Deng Ting serving food to He Lin Cheng, who happily accepted it. At that moment, he felt a surge of emotion.
It was the kind of gaze one would have toward a son-in-law. He ultimately felt unworthy and unable to seek such a happy family life.
He started the car and drove away. Even before being with Yun Li, he had known she possessed a happiness he lacked—a happiness that both drew him in and made him hesitate. He always believed he didn’t deserve someone as wonderful as Yun Li.
After getting together with Yun Li, he discovered that he too could have happiness; he began to envision a future filled with possibilities and started to look forward to it. But now, that seemed increasingly distant.
Gripping the steering wheel tightly with his bony fingers, his knuckles turned white from the pressure as tears suddenly welled up in his eyes.
With National Day over, Yun Li returned to Jing City. She had picked up her car and completed all the necessary paperwork. Taking Shu Ran along, she went for a drive around town.
Now that she had her own car, Yun Li felt it was convenient to go anywhere. Her confidence grew as she ventured out alone; today she felt like treating herself a little.
She went to the largest mall in Jing City to buy some cosmetics. After browsing for a long time at the counter, the sales assistant sized her up. Dressed simply, her dress looked like it cost around two or three hundred online. The bag she carried wasn’t branded either. With no makeup on and her hair down, she had a beautiful face, but it was clear she wasn’t wealthy.
Unable to afford much, the sales assistant noticed her wandering around and seemed eager to push her out without saying it directly. "What do you want, beautiful? I can help you," she said in a strange tone.
Yun Li didn’t pay much attention; she didn’t want anyone chattering in her ear about things she couldn’t understand. She continued to browse, trying on anything that caught her eye.
"No, thank you," she replied when the assistant approached again. The assistant clicked her tongue in annoyance, prompting Yun Li to look up at her. Only then did the assistant awkwardly walk away.
Yun Li found a product she liked and asked, "Can I try this one?"
The assistant didn’t even glance at it and dismissively replied, "You can’t try it."
Frowning at her attitude, Yun Li pressed on, "What about this one?"
"That one too," came the curt response.
"What’s with your attitude? You don’t even look at it before saying I can’t try it."
The assistant shot her a glance and began to grow impatient. "I said you can’t try it. Are you buying or not? If not, don’t waste our time."
Looking around and seeing no one else there, Yun Li thought about how she wasn’t wasting anyone’s time and how she was a paying customer being treated this way.
"Where’s your manager? I want to file a complaint."
The assistant scoffed, "The manager is busy and doesn’t have time for you."
Yun Li had heard that many sales assistants in malls had poor attitudes. She rarely came to buy lipstick herself; usually, she accompanied Shu Ran and had never encountered such a situation before. This was the first time.
Frustrated, another woman’s voice broke through with an air of confidence: "Is this how you treat customers? Ignoring them? You’re ruining our reputation with your behavior."
The sales assistant turned to look; she didn’t recognize the woman standing in front of her but recognized the man behind her—he was the manager.
Yun Li glanced over and immediately recognized Shang Beibei.
She was still as elegant and proud as before, but the difference now was that she was pregnant, her belly slightly rounded. Yet her aura remained exquisite; she hadn't gained much weight, and instead, there was a kind of voluptuous beauty about her.
